I notice people seem to have varying views on which fighting is more tedious or longer.
In my experience, a group of five ground mobs usually goes down in around 30 seconds.
This comes from:
Fabrication engineer Captain, equipped with an exploit weapon. I ret ro flank and always target mobs that can heal/rez first.
2 Tactical BOs, 1 Engineer (Fabrication type stuff mostly) and 1 science, all equipped with exposes.
Meanwhile, space fights generally seem to take two to five minutes for an enemy ship. This is flying an escort with a mix of phasers and heavy cannons. I'd say I manage to use forward weapons around 40% of the time. Full power to weapons.
I don't get the idea that ground combat is tedious. For me, it blows by pretty fast. It's generally a heavy mix of melee and ranged. I don't have to think about buttons but I do tend to pause for setup and positioning and move around constantly in combat.
Space combat, I have a lot more buttons to think about with autofire and positioning to consider but, playing very defensively with shields, it seems to ne a nit slow and focus more on abilities and facing than anything else. Not bad but not nearly as involved as ground combat is in terms of setup/terrain when you're shooting for fast kills.
I've heard the reverse often said and I'm curious what I'm doing differently.
Defiant R, Sci or Tactical... per ship... we are talking an expecting lifespan of less then 20-30 seconds from the moment I click past the 10km mark...
Results, most fights, on elite, take me all of three or four minutes.
Ground on my tactical is pretty quick, rarely do I clear a group in 30 seconds, normally 45 seconds to a minute. Science is almost always to the minute range, although if I get lucky with exposes can be over pretty quick. The fastest my tac has ever killed was with 4 sci, with 4 cone expose guns, and my tac with two split beam assault weapons. But if your first strike fails, it takes forever to kill them.
Ground combats problem is not its pacing, it is that it is boring. Honestly, I'd rather see 10 mobs instrad of 5, but 8 of those 10 mobs are trash, and one shot kills, with two who heal, try and flank, etc... if you ignore the 8 weaklings your dead, but if you take them first, the two vets can get ya in trouble. Plus, it makes combat feel faster if they are dropping like flies.
Well, that's certainly different from my experience. Space combat is almost always quicker than ground combat for me - and I have to admit, my dislike of ground combat has meant that my talent points have all been spent on space skills, since I try to avoid ground combat altogether.
"Normal" mobs are sometimes ok, it's the heavily shielded ones that make me want to walk away and let/hope my Bridge Officers take care of it while I do something more interesting. That said, it's my fervent hope that it gets completely re-done into something with a more frenetic pace that I'd find interesting.
