Things I'd like to see in STO

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
First of all, I'd like to see the K'zin from Larry Niven's Ringworld series. In fact, I'd like to see the whole Ringworld concept incorporated into STO. There's a bunch of other stuff I'd like to see also. In another forum string, there was mention of orders to orbit the ship and cut scenes etc....It would be great to issue a "standard orbit" order with a cut-scene to follow. The leaving orbit cut-scene would also be nice.

Where is Commodore Decker's planet killer?

I'd like to be able to direct more of the ship's routine exploration activities from the bridge. It would be nice if each bridge and ready room were customizable.

There should be toilets on the bridge. Players would use the toilet for pauses more than 15 minutes (sometimes they are necessary) without being disconnected from the server.

That's all I can think of right now. I'd love to see other Sci-fi references in STO. I'm not sure that hopping around the STO universe in a Death-Star is a good balanced game play sort of thing but playing "The Mote in God's Eye" might be fun. As things stand, there is no danger of our ships being overrun by some unknown invader

This is Star Trek, not Ringworld. They cannot take someone's ideas and use it in the game, its against the law. I doubt they would be willing to pay in order to use that idea, especially since it isn't part of Star Trek.

That would be a nice feature, although I really don't see much use for it at the moment.

We fight it in one of the Klingon front missions.

Direct how? More like the show? I'm sure stuff like that would be coming when they revamp the entire exploration concept. I do agree that the bridge (and entire ship) needs more to have more uses. Customization for ship interiors will be a part of the Foundry system eventually.

Errrr first of all toilets aren't necessary to accomplish this. Second, I disagree. The 15 minute inactivity limit is necessary to prevent people who aren't playing the game from taking up bandwidth. Why should someone who isn't playing it slow down the servers for other people? That's completely selfish and rude.

Other sci-fi works shouldn't be incorporated into STO because this is Star Trek not those other works. I wouldn't want to see lightsabers in the game. As a matter of fact I wouldn't expect Cryptic/Atari/CBS to pay for the use of other works.

Curious. I don't recall claiming anything wasn't a part of Star Trek. I said that they couldn't just take someone else's ideas without paying for them. I gave my opinion that other sci-fi works shouldn't be put into STO and use an example with lightsabers. Nope... I never said that something wasn't a part of trek.

It doesn't matter if it was in TAS. If it's not owned by CBS it can't be used. CBS has already said no to the Kzinti when Dstahl asked because they don't have the rights to it.

I have said it before, those who want to play with Mr. Larry's toys must start a internet campaign to get him to offer it to STO at a decent price.
And even if he offered it for free it would still need to be approved by CBS, something that's not going to happen for a lot of legal reasons.

So negative, how about the parts that were allready in TAS? Those have a 'grandfather' legal aspect to them as they have allready been used. As for things that were not in TAS, well, those are obviously a more complex issue.
And how many years did it take to work out the rights so that they could offer TAS DVDs? :)

CBS doesn't want to keep adding things outside of their control. They already have enough issues with Paramount - and CBS and Paramount are both primarily owned by the same company.

And what's there to really discuss here? CBS has already said no to Cryptic about it. If you want to convince the CBS reps to change their minds you won't accomplish that here. :)

A ringworld per se might not be valid in STO, but we do have an instance of a stellar-magnitude Dyson sphere.

"The Slaver Weapon" is already part of ST lore. True, the story appeared in the animated series but it was based on a "Tale from Known Space" story by Larry Nivan called "The Soft Weapon" and this means that CBS must have some rights to the Nivan Universe. I'd love to see a Peirson's Pupeteer or a sparking Kdatlyno. I think it would be cool to encounter a Bandersnatch or the Pak.

The fact that something was in ST doesn't have anything to do with continual rights. You can give someone one-time use rights, perpetual rights, and a dozen other degrees in between those two. In order for CBS to make the TAS DVD set they had to pay him for the rights to use his material in the DVDs. If they want to use it anywhere else they'd have to renegotiate the continual use of the material. CBS has already told Cryptic they don't want to use third-party material in the game, as they don't want to negotiate those rights and pay royalties for them. It's much easier to simply make up new things then use someone else's work.

Not wanting to pay royalties is why Nick Locarno was changed to Tom Paris in Voyager. If they don't want to pay in-house royalties what makes you think they want to pay out-of-house royalties? :)

Figures that someone with the name "Luis Wu" would be wanting the whole o Ringworld incorporated when only the Kzinti were ever featured in any Star Trek series and with tenuous canonicity at that. I do agree that it would be freaking awesome if Known Space was added, but i don't see them fitting it all in without making a lot of fans very angry. Not to mention they still need Nivens' permission. He's public stated that he's find with people using his stuff for fan fiction and discussion, but not commercially without his permission.

That said, the Kzinti are on the drawing board already, they just basically need to get Niven's approval and CBS's approval first.

As for the planet killer... Well... Heh... Do the Federation missions, it shows up sometime in the the Lt Commander missions. Just stay out of it's cone of fire. It hurts. A lot.

Don't we already have Caitians as a playable race? That's as close to Kzinti as you're getting in STO.

Except that Kzinti are against the Federation where as the Caitians are with them. They were both also featured on the same show, though not on the same episodes.

If not Kzinti then at least some other darker feline race should be added to the KDF. Nuff said.

They've already said they're looking at adding another feline race to the game. Just not the Kzinti.

Yeah, but they also said that they're adding in the Kzinti... Sure, having something would be nice, but the Kzinti just have style... I mean.. come on, I wanna use scream and leap tactics. 6000 waves to conquer a demilitarized human world, you can't argue with those kinds of numbers!

Cryptic asked CBS to use the Kzinti. CBS said no, but said they could add another feline race (there's another unnamed one in ST canon from TFF they can use). There's nothing else they can do about it. Jedi are cool too. That doesn't mean STO can use them, even though R2D2 was in the last ST movie. :)

I would like to see an Andorian ship for each carreer... and an Orion ship as well.
    Amdorian uniforms.
I would like to see the Merc outfit put into the on-duty slot so my BOs can use it.

Something like these would be nice, especially improving icons to be more distinguishable from each other (see Essays section):
DarrenKitlor's List of Ideas Applicable at Endgame (or QoL Improvements):

Summary: Some of these ideas date back to March and April but still apply to a large degree. Most were collaborative and incorporated feedback from forum users on how to improve. While many of them share core gameplay mechanics (such as opt-in territory control, they also have unique flavors. Some are more diplomacy/strategy focused and others are more PvP focused.

Most include pictures and a few (like the Explore the System idea) include full-color PDFs

    Endgame Ideas
    (=| Voyage Home |=)
    Synopsis: Oregon Trail meets Civilization

    (=| Warfront Endgame |=)
Synopsis: Medieval: Total War merged with randomized events (KDF focused)

    (=| Under Siege Proposal |=)
Synopsis: Starbases + Opt-in PvP ideas

    (=| Territory Control |=)
Synopsis: The basic idea that influenced the design of the above mentioned threads

    Quality of Life Ideas
    (=| Improving Ground Combat |=)
Synopsis: New weapon types, new powers, new game mechanics, new everything

(=| The Daystrom Institute's Gear Revamp Proposal |=)
Synopsis: Tons of added gear variety

(=| Re-thinking Fleet Actions and STFs in STO: A Suggested Paradigm Shift |=)
Synopsis: Improving the design of large-group content to involve multiple ranks without auto-leveling

(=| Explore the System Proposal |=)
Synopsis: Improving star cluster missions (also used as a base model for many of the endgame ideas in Star Clusters)

(=| Capture and Hold: Once more with Feeling |=)
Synopsis: Improving Capture and Hold flow and game mechanics

    (=| Design a Ship Gameplay Mechanic |=)
Synopsis: Collaborative project to get more unique powers for ships

    Essays
(=| Rethinking Rewards: How Economics and Psychology can Inform STO |=)
Synopsis: Catering rewards to the activity involved, very tough to summarize.

(=| Gestalt Psychology and the Star Trek Online Interface |=)
Synopsis: Making the interface more intuitive

Note: There were a few more but none were as polished as these ones were.
