Is there some way to save out and re-load what powers are in what slot? Something analogous to what the /bind_load_file does ?
Here's what's going on, for me...
In space, if I change ships, *all* my powers are a complete mess, randomly assigned. (Thank you, by the way, for putting self destruct right where I'll push it first thing... :P )
Later, if I change ships back, the first ship's powers are jumbled as well. Strangely, it remembers my energy settings for that ship, seemingly forever!
If I change which boff is sitting in a seat, his powers will be stuck randomly in the opened up spaces. When I go back to the first boff, his powers also do not resume.
So, the short version is, for space, if I want to swap ships, I get to spend a while reorganizing *all* my powers before I can go have fun, every time I swap. If I just want to swap a boff to match circumstances, then I still usually have to dig and arrange at least a little bit.
For ground, it's a bit better... I can swap my weapons back and forth and weapon power X1 replaces Y1 and X2 replaces Y2 just fine.
But... if I change what other equipment I'm carrying, it will appear in some random spot, and of course neither item will remember where it was supposed to be. So, if I swap a weapon battery for a triolic thigiamajig, then the triolic will show up not in the same spot as the battery was in.
What I'm hoping is that we can get a permanent system to remember where things go when assigned, or at least specify "boff power x goes in slot y when it's present" or "equipment x goes in slot y when it's present". But if we don't have that, then at least I'll make a nice big text file with all of everything, and load from that, if it's possible.
This problem is what killed my plans to farm data samples with my runabout. I'm trying to decide if it's more annoying trying to turn in around in an exploration cruiser or resetting all my powers every time I change ships.
I support this, and I've already started a thread here. It's really a pain to have to sit there for a few minutes before going anywhere, after everything was already set up the way I like it. Same goes for the ground ability tray.
I agree wholeheartedly. This is the only reason I don't take my other ships out for a spin once in a while, and instead always stick to one.
It would also be nice if it remembered which Bridge Officers you had assigned to which slots when you change ship.
Ditto, if would be nice if we could save ship assignments and shipp power bar layouts to files and save and reload them like we can currently with keybinds via the 'Bind_Save_File" and "Bind_Load_File" slash commands.
If this IS already possibe, any one who knows the appropriate / command and can post it here; that would be nice; but if it's not possible, it would be a great feature for the Devs to add to their 'to do' list; and I can spend up to 20 minutes redoing my power bars when I make a BO or ship selection change.
Actually, the layout when changing ships is not so random, though I don't understand the mechanics. I'm too lazy, and don't care enough to figure out exactly how it works.
I also noted after one of my ship changes, that most things ended up where they were supposed to be; and it seems that these big changes and apparent randomness are more likely to be caused when you get a new ship, put all your old stuff into it, and then expect the new ship to have the same hot bar layout. It seems once you set things up, that they are more sticky.
Normally this is one of those things I would go look up in the manual, but.............
The ship skills are a lot 'stickier' than they used to be, but not perfect.
I agree it would be nice if it remembered the mapping in terms of which BO / Capt / Weapon slot goes to which toolbar slot, so that I could swap out a BO and have the new skills go exactly where the old ones were.
Another thing I have noticed is after every second or third zone change, some of my powers just randomly disappear. It appears to be limited to the transwarp powers (from Diplomacy), but it is very strange...
I don't know how well this would go over, but it's a thought...
What if the power bars were redesigned with 4 levels instead of 3? My idea is:
Bar 1 (1-0): Ship's weapons and captain's powers (i.e., slipstream, distribute shields)
Bar 2 (Ctrl+#): BO Tactical powers
Bar 3 (Alt+#): BO Science powers
Bar 4 (Shift+#): BO Engineer powers
I'd like to keep the 10 slots that we have now. These bars would only need to have 8 slots for BO's, and any extra spaces would be available for slotting extra captain's powers. I would also love to see these bars color-coded by career: red for Tactical, blue for Science, and yellow for Engineering, and white (suggestion?) for command.
I wish was some way that these slots could be linked to the Crew Assignments tab. For example, if you're running a Sovereign-class ship, you have 2 Tactical (Ensign and Lieutenant), 2 Engineers (Lt. Cmdr. and Cmdr.), and 1 Science (Lieutenant) BO. Slots 1-4 on Bar 2 would be assigned to the Ensign, 5-8 to the Lieutenant, and so on for the other officers. That way, whenever you change ships, their powers would automatically be assigned to a preset slot.
I'm no programmer, so I'm not even sure that this is possible. It does sound feasible, though.
I definately agree that there needs to be some way to consistently save the configuration of your power bar, as well as the ability to switch BOs or weapons and have the new ability buttons replace the old ones IN THE SAME SLOTS as the old ones.
The problem, as I've been able to figure it out, is that you can assign a power button to a given slot, but it has to be an unused slot among all of your powers, even those that are not slotted. For instance, I can switch my Science Bridge Officer from the one with Tachyon Beam and Science Team to the one with Jam Sensors and Transfer Shield Strength, but I have to assign Tachyon Beam and Science Team to 9 and 0 (for instance) and Jam Sensors and TSS to C9 and C0. When I switch my Science Officers the buttons switch from tray 1 to tray 2 just fine. But if I try to put Jam Sensors in 9 and try to make it replace Tachyon Beam, I end up with it jumping back to the first empty slot when I try to switch back to that BO.
Likewise, I can switch ships just fine, as long as I have made sure to assign all of the powers for that ship to the proper slots. It holds that configuration when I switch to another ship and restores it when I switch back to it. I have to rebuild my trays from scratch whenever I buy a new ship, but then I don't usually have to worry about it again. But unless I remember to switch my Bridge Officer assignment from the first ship's arrangement to the second BEFORE I beam up, the BO power assignments get mixed up. And it's possible switching around weapons messes it up too. (I usually have a complete set of weapons for each of my ships so I don't have to move stuff around)
Additionally, I think what is happening is that if you don't have a slot assigned to a power and it gets given the first available one, if this overwrites a slot assignment because you don't currently have THAT power slotted, it gets lost too. That starts a chain reaction of powers unassigning other powers until they are all being added at random.
So I guess that's what I'm asking for. When you assign a power to a hot bar slot, let it STAY assigned to that hot bar slot. If it can't be placed in that slot because it is currently occupied, place it in another slot, but don't discard the assignment. Make sure it can be put back there any time the slot is free. And if two powers are being switched, remove the first from the slot before adding the second.
(Putting it another way; remove all slots from the tray for all powers of a Bridge Officer that is being removed, and only then add all slots for the powers of the Bridge Officer that is being added. Instead of removing old power 1, adding new power 1, removing old power 2, adding new power 2, and so on. You programmers should know what I mean. Two for-loops, instead of just one )
Personally, I think the best way to do this is, first of all, to display ALL powers that you have available in your Powers screen, not just those that are currently available. Make the ones for BOs you don't have currently assigned or weapon types that aren't available greyed out or something to indicate you can't use them. Then, next to that power display the tray slot it is currenlty assigned to, or blank if it's not. A power's "assignment" will always be the first available slot until you manually assign it to a location (or you can have something like the "lock tray" button to assign all the currently slotted powers) and then any additional powers you try to add, or powers for which the slot is already taken will go in the first empty slot as before.
any chance of getting this put into the system before the foundry goes live??
as others have mentioned, this is one of the main reasons why i do not play longer, it simply gets frustrationg sitting down setting up boffs, power bars, and ship levels every time you change ships. I'd rathe spend that time playing the game and having fun, not preparing my ship so i can have fun.......
I have been talking about this since betA and I have not received a response.
It is annoying.
Part of the problem (it seems) is how it is saved on the cryptic database server.
My question is, why can't it be saved in a text file on your pc? I mean really?
And you could save, for the captain, different loadouts even per ship.
For example a pvp bo/weapon/ship configuration/action bar layout and a pve one for the same ship (let alone one for multiple).
This way you could even append it offline.
But cryptic has more pressing issues I guess
You find mixing the control frustrating AGREED, now try when something disappear, I explain I am rear admiral and at one point if I go on a ground fight I have my 2 guns but in close combat I can't punch the other guy to defend myself, that power just disappear....I check every where can't find it, I ask them for help, the answer is that is not ther problem and they send me here to find the solution.
I hate that problem! A lot of times, the first (faster) shooting option of my gun will disappear in mid-fight, so I'm stuck with just the firing option with the long cool-down.
Hit "P" in order to pull up your power options, scroll down until you see your hand-to-hand combat option, and copy it back to your hotbar.
I cant understand either why changing ships has to be so much work. Why cant thier be at least 3 or 4 save configurations options for the powers? Each one you have saved would assign the appropriate BO for you and have the powers readily available how you set it originally.
I enjoy flying various ships from time to time but hate spending 30 minutes or more re organizing my power tray! Especially if I get the urge to do some PvP after anonamoly farming or PvE. I want to switch from my farm boat to my escort quickly.
Please Cryptic. Give us some save ship config options that we can load when we change ships.
Can someone start a poll for this to see how many people support this idea?
I have had a ticket in for this for awhile now too (see this thread: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=191342). When the game first started, it used to keep everything in place when switching ships and even kits. But, ever since one of the very first major patches, this mechanic has been working sporadically. This drives me even more crazy when you have changed absolutely nothing and you power tray is all scrambled or even completely blank.
When you switch ships...your powers get messed up because you dont have your BOs assinged properly yet. When you get your new ship....bring up your U screen and hit assignments tab...place the BOs how you want them/had them and then you will only have to make a cpl minor adjustments due to your new BOs abilities you add. Go into space and you should see your powers right where you left them....if not very close.
I figured this out only a cpl months ago when switching back and forth between my ships and shuttles.
I have been talking about this since betA and I have not received a response.

I'v also made a post about this just today, that suggests a way to implement this - My suggestion is not PvP or PvE related but rather, since BOff assignments control some of what appears in the tray, and I want to keep them in, let's say tray 3, I'd like to have the ability to restore a setup I made (this is per ship, for example when switching from my science ship to an escort and back).
The problem grows exponentially when a player likes to collect and fly canon ships every switch he makes leads to rearrangement of the powers tray (unless he follows the half-solution of assigning BOffs before beaming up and then what ? still there are the captain's powers to arrange
How bad is that? why not just load a setup ? I will give those names according to the ship class and thats that.
