Why? Boring, repetitive game play w/o any meat on the bones.
Honestly, I LOVE Star Trek. Been a trekkie since I can remember. I love being able to fly a Star Trek universe type ship. That isn't why I have canceled my account. I canceled my account because, after having ran up 2 RA's, a VA, a Lt. General and easily 20 odd other characters up to about captain level I have come to realize... No matter what I do, this game is boring as hell. It is the same things over and over again. It doesn't matter what side I play, it is the same thing, with only minor cosmetic changes made to the missions, events, scenario's or whatever.
I had hoped to hang in till UGC went live but to be honest, I just can't see waiting for players to do the job and improve a game the developers should have done in the first place. So... After the 3rd.. i'm gone. No you can't have any of my stuff.. if things actually improve, I might come back. So i'm going to hedge my bets.
I did a count yesterday and realized I have played 43 different MMOs over the years. Since I'm currently playing 9 (7 subs and 2 F2P) that means I've left 34 games that weren't for me. I imagine I'll probably leave another 50 before my day is done. This is our hobby and hit should be fun. When it stops being fun it's time to move on to something else. Good luck with whatever game you end up playing. I hope it makes you happy.

It isn't that I don't LIKE the game, but when you don't even need to really think through anything to make it to VA in such a short amount of time (about 3 weeks of effort) and with ridiculous ease. The lack of... effort... required in this game is just... boring.
I guess I am used to more challenging games, that require a significant amount of work to get through them. I fondly remember EQ 1 Hell levels, and I am an avid EVE player, so I guess... I hoped for more from STO. My expectations were not met. Yes I know they are MY expectations, but... I just don't feel I should lower my expectations of what a game IS to me, just because I am a total GEEK for the IP.

I don't think you need to justify your choices to anyone here. We all have different preferences. There's nothing wrong with not liking something; or leaving and coming back every 5-6 months to give it another try if it's not where you want it to be now. I do that with a lot of game - I've subbed and unsubbed from Eve 5-6 times over the years. If one game was right for everyone we'd all be playing WoW.
They might be a nono, but due to Cryptics Cancel account page, and the severe lack of depth of options to explain WHY you canceled (I guess that is par for the course), I felt that I should express why here for a mod/dev to see so they could take note and (hopefully) pass the reason up through the chain of command.
I know 1 account amounts to squidly, but take into consideration that I also just purchased the Garumba destroyer (today no less) and have almost ALL the C-store items purchased... then maybe my canceling my sub might make them wonder why. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Star Trek, i'm just not real thrilled with how insanely easy this game is. It takes no effort to max out. No work. I expect... more I guess.
Couple the ease with the limited mission scenarios and I am just bored. Prolly be back in a few months but till then. C'est La Vie.

This I agree on, the game is way to easy and fast to level up. Elite setting in space is fun, but you are forced to play at a lower setting because you don't know if you will get a ground mission that instant kills you if you are on Elite.

I know you want your voice to be heard but the simple truth is some Dev is eventually going to come and close this thread and it's going to sink into obscurity; and there's a good bet that the Dev who closes it probably won't even have the time to read more then a line or two of it.
Cryptic's not stupid. They don't believe they've built a perfect game. Dstahl and all the other Devs have been quite upfront in knowing where the problems are. You're not really telling them anything they don't already know. But they have to work with what they have to work with. If Dev wishing, rather then Dev manpower, made the changes to the game STO would be a very different game.

STO as a Sandbox type game. Fewer instances. More interaction. More 'suprise' missions as you fly past a planet or star system. MUCH MUCH slower leveling as you gain in level.
Ensign to Lt. Commander should take some effort. Lt. Commander to Commander much more. Commander to Captain significantly more. Captain to RA should be extremely hard to get to and take great effort, and a LOT of time to manage, and from there up, even more so. It should take real dedication and real effort to make top ranks in the game, instead, you can do it in a few weeks.
Yeah I know, my voice isn't likely to be heard, or even considered in the grand plan of the game. But I can never the less, make the attempt because all things considered, I do like the game, I just wish it was not so effortless.
Not saying "I quit" is the way to go, but I do feel where you are coming from.
For me it is not lack of content, but the fact that it is repetitive. You want the bonsu item for each of your characters, well better run the mission for all fo your characters - regardless if you have 4 or 40. Having a mid-double digit amount of characters, I cna tell you it gets old - FAST.
Would liek to see some variance in the game, or least more opportunities to FAIL. Yes when you fail it is frustrating, but least it does add a bit of variance too the game.
Also in before the lock. The endgame is really dead and immersion is not on Cryptic's radar. Plus the ridiculous STFs...I'm a lot less sure about that lifetime I was going to purchase.
I actually canceled EVE Online today for similar reasons.

The no real sand box areas has hurt STO I think. Some persistent zones for both ground and space mobs to kill is really needed and persistent PVP zones as well. Or combine the two. The explorer zones don't really have a sand box feel. I think some sand box areas are needed in every MMO.
I totally agree even on elite the game is to simple and easy. No challenge, I have really never got any feeling of accomplishment from this game. Even when I got the most kills and fewest deaths in PVP. Or was the highest scorer in a fleet action.
To be honest I have got much more frustration and boredom from STO than fun. Designing characters was more fun than a lot of the game play.
I think that UGC will allow players to make quest more to their skill level and get the kind of challenge they want. Designing quest will be fun also.

What keeps players playing a MMO ?End game content PvP crafting and production of more endgame content that is fun and not borring and grinding. But they dont understand this, tht why many games fail.
They been told so many times about providing more endgame content for the players i dont know how many times, ii mean how can they think players will hang around when there is nothing to do, and those damd STF's they refuse to make pug friendly, again they been told many times and what do we no hear again from gozer, the STF's will not be change for the better, they will remain as they are.Its not like STO have any god PvP that actually makes you feel like there is a war going on.People think that they make more content but this is hardly true, endgame content there there is almost nothing done since the game came out, PvP hah yeah right etcetc.
I wish i never paid for lifetime because i know i'm gonna be playing TOR and nothing else.Me to i love STAR TREK but this is not STAR TREK to me.They made UGC so they dont have to make more content because i'm guessing most Cryptic devs are working on the other MMO they are making.
But C store on the other hand.

Cryptic chose to focus on the Foundry for right now. There are currently over 200 episodes there to be played. If you do 5 a day, along with your normal dailies, you're looking at 40 days of content. By the time those 40 days are up there ill probably be another 200 new missions in the Foundry. It's not a prefect end-game solution but it buys them time.

Trust me, don't put all your eggs in the SWTOR basket. You're going to be disappointed a month or so in just like you are with STO.
I recnetly returned to EVE Online, and quickly remembered the thrill of getting tackled, and watching my shileds go down.....my armor get torn to shreads....and even my hull get reduced to 40%...before I finally managed to get my drones to kill the enemy that was scrambling my warp drive.....
What was at stake?
A 30 million isk ship (ship cost, plus fittings and cargo). Now that is not a tremendous amount of money, but its a lot more than respawning and returning to the fight within seconds either. But, for a less wealthy or experienced pilot, 30 million isk could be a real set back.
I can understand why the OP feels the way he does about STO, but perhaps due to a slightly different reason.

I normally fly T3 (cov-ops gank fit, small gang tackler), Force Recons or a gank fit (buffer tank, no reps) Harby in Nullsec. Been times my 3/4 billion isk ship and fittings was into it and put a pucker in my factor (just looked at what it cost to buy my last Legion... erf).
I understand the OP's reason for canceling; I canceled my LTS for the same reasons back when they allowed for refunds. To retain subscribers they need to focus on making content that's fun to experience.
It's a challenge for any developer to make engaging content. I don't know if I'll be sticking around after this 30 day sub runs out, either.

Heh. I've been dreading this also. Ive been playing MMOs since MUD/s / Ultima. Ya. Takes a lot to keep me happy. Lets hope TOR does its job. All I know is that 2011 will be painful for Crytpic if it doesn't get its inner trek flowing.

Korean grind fests are that way. Second star to the left. Buy some purple gear and sent it to@solidnuetronium before they lock this thread.
Goodbye.

Good luck in your other MMO's
I REALLY wish the would allow seperate difficulty settings as I would (and do) play Elite in space, but if I could, I'd stick to Normal or Advanvced on the ground (and honestly I hope the 'ground game' revamp is a bit more than just a new FPS style aim and shoot system.
As to the OP - As someone who played EQ 1 for 5 years (started April 1999) - I have to say, I did everythiong too (Was a Monk who camped the Black Gnoll spawn for 72 hours staright for a Celestial Fists epic quest piece; then came to my senses and went the (then considered shameful ) route of getting a Guild gfroup together and killing Raster); and I also raided the Temple Of Veeshan regularly in the OLD days were there was no unified 36 man group possible - but the days when you took 6 groups, and ONE was desigannted as the EXP group; and if you were lucky they shifted people in an out as they died so you didn't end up with a net EXP LOSS for a given raid; and also spent many a game session either spamming:
"Level 50 (later 65) Monk LFG"
Or sat at a zone in point with a group waiting for a given 'camp' to become available for grinding EXP andleveling...
but you know what:
It's BECAUSE of stuff like that that World of Warcraft killed EQ as far as being the #1 western subbed MMO. Why? because people ot sick of the utter lack of any Dev communication from SOE (one Dev post every 6 months was the AVERAGE in those days); as well as ALL the artificial time sinks built intop the game. (FYI - there is ZERO Grind by comparison for ANYTHING in STO when compared to th UTTER GRING that was EQ in general from 1999 - 2005 pre- WoW. No the Eblem grind dosen't begin to approach some of the mind numbing grinds of the original EQ)
And I was like you once, thinking - Yes, THAT'S the 'challenge' of a 'True MMO'; until I lookled back oblectively and found that one of the reasons I left EQ was that it became more like a second job; and often it wasn't the content or the grind that I enjoyed AT ALL; but the friends I grouped with as we comiserated together.
So, in the end, while I agree that, in that vien, STO isn't 'challenging' (although in space Elite DOES, imo, provide just enough challenge to be fun); but I find I've enjoyed the ride and actually had fun in game; and it's nice to have an MMO that isn't designed for the ground up to force grouping to advance your character(Just say no to PUGs was a common and acceoted motto back in the EQ days); and as a Veteran of both th EQ and WoW endgames - sorry, I don't really miss the endgame 'loot treadmill' of having to do the same instance 40 - 50 times (either ToV for EQ or MC or BWL for my WoW heyday) just to get properly geared for the next Raid instance. (I got out just as the "So, you want to group, eh? What's your Gearscore?" craze began in WoW.)
There's a big reason WoW went from the 40 man to the 10 and 25 main lair design - they're finding the archaic 'grind it to death' super large difficult Raid model isn't all that popular or really used by the majority of players; and the ones that DO love the 'old mparadigms make up less than 10% of a game's subscription base. Most peope just want to relax and do things with friends.
So, in the end, I have to say, I do hope STO can get away from the 'loot treadmill' paradigm and do something a little different. And if you think the STFs ARE a loot treadmill - no, they aren't. If you complete them everyone is GUARENTEED a good drop. Not so with any of EQ's or WoW's loot treadmill as you could take a 40 man raid in, kill 8 bosses - and STILL come away with no real upgrades for your group. Again, while I would love more endgame content, and stuff to do at max level - a 'loot treadmill' timesink isn't what I call a good solution. personally, I DON'T miss the grind that was EQ; nor the 40 man Raid days of WoW. YMMV.
I REALLY wish the would allow seperate difficulty settings as I would (and do) play Elite in space, but if I could, I'd stick to Normal or Advanvced on the ground (and honestly I hope the 'ground game' revamp is a bit more than just a new FPS style aim and shoot system.

Beautiful post. The game needs more. So much more. Primarily it needs some form of territory control. Without that it simply doesn't express how big this war is among the factions. People need a real reason to logon other than grinding.
Actually, I just thought of an idea that would keep me in the game. A simple toggle in the Character Creation page or UI controls that would let me have the option of reducing my normal XP gain to 1/10 normal. Or better yet, turn off XP gain all together so I can relax, take my time about leveling etc. without the game itself pushing me to VA level whether I want to be there or not.
Maybe make it so when you toggle XP reduced or off that it also reduces BO points as well. *shrugs* not that that option would ever make it in the game but ya know.. would be nice not to be pushed like a bat out of hell to VA. Just seems idiotic.
Why? Boring, repetitive game play w/o any meat on the bones.

Maybe I am missing something but these two statements seem to be totally contradictory.
You are bored with the same thing over and over... Yet you think doing the same stuff at 1/10th of the pace will make it fun again? Ok then.
I like Trek, plus this is my 1st online game, so I guess that's why I'm not really bored or jaded here.
End of line.
Ditto Romulus, I read these posts and see things like "Got to VA in three weeks.." and I'm absolutely flabbergasted.
I haven't been here since the day of launch, but I got in in February, so pretty close to.
My original character, Mirel, hit RA in something like 5 months, then, when the cap went to VA, it took another 2 1/2 weks to get him there. Admittedly, the second or third time through were faster, but now I have one VA of each class Fed-side, and a Commander in the KDF.
For people who are always complaining about the grind, they must be doing an awful lot of it to hit the cap-wall so quickly.
I hate grinds, so, I just don't do them. I'll do one exploration mission here, one PvP match there, one PvE mission over here.. Wander about for a bit, do a DSE, explore a system I never bothered to warp into before, etc..
If you get bored with grinding, change it up, don't just demand more content to grind through.

Not really, no. Even at a casual pace I made level cap before my free 30 days were up, and that was with not touching the game for a week, and rerolling once.
It probably has a lot to do with veteran MMO players vs newcomers to MMO.
When I played my first MMO way back when (before Kunark in EverQuest), it took me nearly a year to max level. Why? Because you're more apt to play with the systems, explore every nook and cranny to see and do everything games have to offer.
The veteran MMO players...not so much. At least for me, I'm more interested in experiencing the content itself, doing the missions rather than exploring the systems. Because honestly, STO doesn't do anything game systems wise that isn't around in some form or another in other MMOs. It's become old hat, even in a new game.

Hardcore gamers made it to cap in days if not hours. The game is obviously designed for the more casual player. They are where the long-term money flow is from.
Actually, the OP lost me when he misspelled y'all.
I spent three weeks playing tier one ground PVP with different characters after launch. Then I leveled to captain with a space spec'ed tactical officer and started to play DS9 under siege with him. Then I made some ground spec'ed characters for DS9 under seige. I leveled from Captain to like Captain 9 in DS9 then went to level cap which was rear admiral at the time. I took my time leveling when I got to cap there was nothing to do.
I haven't even leveled my characters to Vice Admiral because there is no reason too. I have deleted a Rear Admiral and three captains. I have 3 Rear Admirals and nothing to do with them.

Good luck in your other MMO's
Blak
STO needs some sandbox areas in my opinion.
Trust me, don't put all your eggs in the SWTOR basket. You're going to be disappointed a month or so in just like you are with STO.
There is nothing but flying safe in STO.
Been times my 3/4 billion isk ship and fittings was into it and put a pucker in my factor (just looked at what it cost to buy my last Legion... erf).
mhm
It's a challenge for any developer to make engaging content. I don't know if I'll be sticking around after this 30 day sub runs out, either.
I know exactly how you feel man. We are geeks that are not willing to take our licks silently.
Heh. I've been dreading this also. Ive been playing MMOs since MUD/s / Ultima. Ya. Takes a lot to keep me happy. Lets hope TOR does its job. All I know is that 2011 will be painful for Crytpic if it doesn't get its inner trek flowing.
Goodbye.
YMMV.
Beautiful post. The game needs more. So much more. Primarily it needs some form of territory control. Without that it simply doesn't express how big this war is among the factions. People need a real reason to logon other than grinding.
Maybe make it so when you toggle XP reduced or off that it also reduces BO points as well. *shrugs* not that that option would ever make it in the game but ya know.. would be nice not to be pushed like a bat out of hell to VA. Just seems idiotic.
End of line.
Maybe I am missing something but these two statements seem to be totally contradictory.
You are bored with the same thing over and over... Yet you think doing the same stuff at 1/10th of the pace will make it fun again? Ok then.
I haven't even leveled my characters to Vice Admiral because there is no reason too. I have deleted a Rear Admiral and three captains. I have 3 Rear Admirals and nothing to do with them.
