Ok I have been reading some of the forums and have heard people say that STO is a grind fest.
I am sorry but I hit VA in 13 days. Ambassador in 32. I am now working on getting mark 11 purple weapons for my ship. I have the Aegis gear already and the borg console. This game is not a Grindfest.
You want to know what grind fest is, Try Requiem Bloodymare. I hit level 42 is that just to find there there were only 2 missions for that level and that got you less than 2% of what you needed for the next level. you had to sit there and kill the highest exp mob you could find over 10,000 times to get the next level. That is a grind fest.
Try Lineage 2 where you need a total of 25.314.079.999 exp to hit the max level of 85 and 100%. 85 and 0% to 85 and 100% is 5.486.639.999 exp and an average mob gives between 5.000 and 100.000 exp. A one time quest grants you with around 10.000.000 exp, but the others may give you 100.000-300.000 tops at the higher levels.
Yes those numbers are real and also the reason why almost 90% of the players there bot 24/7 to hit the cap level and then go out and kill every "n00b" legit player they can find.

Sorry but STO IS a grind fest. It is the same stuff. Over and Over and Over and Over and Over. It doesn't matter that you can hit VA in 3 weeks. What matters is, you have to do the same TRIBBLE Over and Over and OVER again add naseum. I have a VA, had 2 RA (deleted them BOTH), close to 20 different characters upto Captain before I deleted THEM, and a Lt. General (as well as a few lower level characters that also got deleted) and I am bored utterly to tears in this game because EVERYTHING, EVERY MISSION, IS THE SAME. I.E. a Grind Fest. Go kill 5 groups of blah. Go check out these computers. Go check out these computers AND kill 5 groups of blah. It is all the same damn mission. Just slightly different wrappings on it.
Sadly, they all do, but most have more... depth. Variety. Better writing.
Better story maybe (although some of the story arc missions in STO are well written), but it's still kill x amount of enemy y to gain item z that is repeated everywhere so I don't know about depth.
The only variety I can think of is that there may be are enemies that you need to attack in a certain way to kill or else it will resist your hits, regenerate health, spawn minions or deal huge damage to you. I wish we would have some of those in STO as well.
Cryptic has limited resources. They do want this game to succeed too. And they know that making us happy is the way to accomplish that. They know that skimping us off and making a quick buck is not in their best interests. What you say here is nothing new and indeed cryptic are fixing the 'grindfest' with new content at least every few weeks.
I'm for sure not quitting. This game still has allot of potential, but I wish Cryptic hadn't listened to everyone complaining back in closed beta that it took more than a few days to hit the level cap and that we should automatically get the next tier ship for free as soon as we level instead of letting us work for it.

This. I think if it took significantly more effort to make your advancements coupled with about 5 times more overall content I would probably be less unhappy. Granted I detest grind fests, but if I am going through an EQ style hell level every now and then, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel when I got through it. The feeling of accomplishment would be greater.
As it sits, there is no feeling of accomplishment. No feeling like I WORKED to get where I am at. Instead, I feel like I am playing Star Trek Online with a GameShark somehow.
If you think STO is a grindfest, then you are playing the game for entirely the wrong reasons..
This isn't aZomgLookAtMyPurplesMyEPeenIsSoBig !! game..
It's a ZOMG I'm In Friggin' STAR TREK, I'm Gonna go RP a Story with Friends !! game ^_^
This I agree with. STO is the very first MMO that I have played for an extended period of time and I have enjoyed it It took me a few months to level a Tactical Human and an Engineer Alien to VA. I have a Tactical Caitian and an Engineer Rigelian that are still Lieutenant Commander because I am taking it slow with them (mostly because this time of year is very busy for me at work.) I also have a Engineer female Orion that I just leveled up to Captain this morning.
I am now in the process of upgrading some things on my VAs from doing respecs to getting different gear. I will never complain about lack of content because they will always be something for me to do.

STO is a grindfest if you look at the content. You essentially level using the same mechanic from level 1 to level cap. I do agree with you that if you embrace the story, the game can be very enjoyable, but the content Cryptic provides is very repetitive.
Let's take a look at the major mission types.
Storyline
Go to a system. Kill 5 ships and/or scan five objects. Beam down to a planet. Kill 5 squads and/or click 5 objects. Beam up and kill one last wave. Depart the system.
You may have the rare mission that involves talking to NPCs and leaving.
Sector Patrols
Generally, have 5-6 systems to patrol. You will generally kill X number of ships, sometimes while scanning objects in space. Sometimes you will kill ships, beam down and kill ground troops or click consoles, beam up and kill something else.
Some sector patrols have a mission which only involves click five objects or talking to NPCs. These are fairly rare.
Exploration Missions
You have a few varieties here, but it's more of the same.
* Defend X system: Defeat Y number of ships/ship squadroms.
* Scan X devices/freighters to aid in an investigation.
* Scan 5 anomalies
* Beam down and kill X squads while possibly having to click Y computer terminals.
* Beam down and kill X squads.
* Aid a planet by delivering X quantity of a specified aid item.
Diplomacy
Until you get First Contacts you essentially do nonviolent exploration missions. Click X terminals, scan X ships, etc.
Yes, the game can be great fun when you have a group of people who want to roleplay, but community is also somewhat anemic in STO due to the way the server is constructed. During Open Beta and post-launch, I used to socialize with a lot of people in #STO and #STOQA, invariably we would end up grouping and doing content and socializing, but the monotony of the content eventually got to all of us.
Of the original members of The Queue Continuum, only one aside from myself has logged more than once since I've been back.

This game isn't near as grindy as many other MMOs. Even Klingon gameplay.
