Devs ... Who is the Tron Fan???

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Ok ... First think I found interesting is the fact that the Marauder Patrol Cruiser looks a lot like a Tron cycle.

I noticed that one when it first was introduced.

Now with Aegis and the lighting affects I have to ask .... Who among the devs is the Tron fan? ... and was it your muse?

Haha, I thought the same thing when I saw the Aegis. But being a fan of the visual style of Tron, I like it. :D

Well I love the futuristic look of Tron (more the new one then the old but both are still great!) and that seems like a way that STO starfleet is starting to go. Just look at your ship interiors for Starfleet and you'll see what I mean.

It's a good step in the right direction in any case...... but how does the Orion ship look anything like a lightcycle:D

Oh don't get me wrong ... I like the look of the blue lighting on my Fed ships and LOVE the red on my KDF!

Put Aegis lights on it and you've got an old-school with the red lights of the bad-guy programs.

Yea, the Aegis set has a tron influence. But i cant agree on the patrol cruiser.

The rounded bloated look can be blamed firmly on ST:Enterprise and their depiction of Orions.

    As in this example.

I saw a KDF ship this morning that was all black and red outlined it looked SO cool. And being a hardcore Tron fangirl, it was the first thing I thought of. xD

What type of ship was it?
    BOP
    Raptor

It was larger than my bop. Dark gray almost black and had red lining all over it. I had to sit there and look at it for so long before I beamed down.

Nothing is wrong with Tron. I think Tron inspried some of the later ST tech... Tron is one of the most awesome scifi movies. Ever.

    You've got to be kidding me. Got a picture of both for comparison? o_o;

    Yes, yes it is.

    I'm not joking.

And it's called look it up on youtube haha. If you've seen the original film you'll notice it right away on Voyager.

    Ye Ghods.

    Tron Lines
are hardly unique to TRON - TRON is used as the Trope Namer basically because they are EVERYWHERE in the original movie Read the link I provided to see examples from all different media (including Real Life) to see where else they've been used - a small sampling, sure, do you need a bigger one?

Sum total: Those "lines of power" have existed for just about as long as stories about powerful beings have -0 be they shown as runes, or parts of structures. Doesn' tmean the devs are fans of TRON in particular - they're merely using a convention that's been around for a long, long time.

Pretty well my first thought when seeing a ship with the Aegis set installed was 'Tron'. It's a classic design move. In fact, I modded my Sovereign to use the darker skin (4) to emphasise the effect when I crafted my own set. Look pretty freakin' cool in-game.
That said, Callasan, somehow I knew your link would be to TVTropes before clicking on it (what're you trying to do, lure people away from STO by linking to that online crack?) but if you note, all the examples cited in the sub-folders of the article appear to post-date Tron. Give Disney their kudos here, they really did come up with an original look for modern pop-culture. It's like the Matrix and bullet time. Even if they're not the ur-source, they certainly brought it into the contemporary zeitgeist.
I dunno, too drunk to know what I'm typing at this point. Happy holly daze, all! :D

Now now ... Have a glass of blood wine and join me in a head-butting competition. :)

Seriously ... I have no problems with it and am simply poking fun at this because it is rather cool that this hits STO just when the movie hits the theater.

I have all my high ranking ships decked out and saw Tron last night ... a movie I thoroughly enjoyed.

I would be curious to hear from a dev on the following ... what WAS the inspiration for the Aegis / Tron effect ... and I know many people that DO refer to it as the Tron effect in game. :)

Based on the screenshots, I thought my Intrepid would end up looking more Tronny than it actually did. We need a way to make the lights brighter :D

    I know what you mean.
I have an Intrepid myself and the blue lines could use an added couple notches on the brightness scale.

Kinda goes with the Tron looking med kit my science char wears with the blue plexi-glass look from the kit.

    Pretty cool combo.

I am also curious who the Tron fan is from the Dev team.
And I got to say excellent work on the two sets for all those involved, just up the notch for the brightness scale for the fed ships concerning the Aegis set and you will have it spot on.
