K, I prefer the tactical officer, focusing on DPS. For versatility, I'd say engineer. Every character is a "ranged" character, they use phaser rifles etc. Dual wielding? Yep there's a few dual pistols, but they're really not that useful. I have found that it's best to use a phaser sniper rifle, but that's just me.
I would suggest checking out the STO wiki for more info and some ideas on builds.
If you wanna focus on hand to hand, then you're gonna have to go tactical officer. That's the only one that has any leg sweep etc. However, keep in mind that ground combat really isn't the focus of this game. For every 5-8 space missions you might get 1 ground mission.
Check out the wiki, there's lots of useful stuff there for new players. Don't be afraid to ask other players questions in zone chat either. I've found the community can be quite helpful and friendly over all.
Lastly,
Welcome to STO, I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do.
PM me if you need anything else.
Set course........second star to the right, and straight on till morning.
Thanks allot guys good to know about allot of skills to spam, I think I will try the martial artist first and then play a engineer later, I usually enjoy versatile roles in mmos not straight foward dps. I will check out the wiki to.
Does ma need some kind of back up like a ranged weapon or a melee weapon?
you'll need a bat'leth for close combat, which will be kinda hard for the first few ranks. You WILL need a rifle, phaser, or something ranged. Go bare handed and I don't think you'll last very long in a fight. Most of the ground encounters aren't one on one, it's more like 8-10 (or more) on 5 (you and your bridge officers)
As a captain, you can carry two weapons at once (your empty hands count as one of these) and switch between them at will (default mapped to the z key).
Sounds like I need to restart again and just stick with a ranged character.
You really do not need to keep restarting if you make a "mistake". As you increase in level and rank you'll be able to try out different tactics. Even when you reach the level cap which is Vice Admiral 1 you can play around with things and find what is best for you the adjust your weapons, skills, etc. accordingly. That is what I have done and I have played through the game with 3 Federation characters and 1 Klingon character.
Don't be too quick to dismiss unarmed combat. I've taken down Swordmasters with my Betazoid Tac-office hand-to-handr--of course, that's at normal difficulty level--I doubt very seriously I'd be able to do it at advanced or--heaven forbid--Elite!
How you kit your captain is very important too. And, as pointed out, you get to respec once you get promoted. I've found that it works best for my Tac captain to have a ranged weapon and keep the second slot open for hand-to-hand. Also, when taking on Klingons, I almost always go with a kit that gives me some martial arts and/or stealth skills. Going against oppos who like ranged combat--I go with ranged weapons in both slots--a long range sniping weapon in one slot and the equivalent of a machine pistol or shotgun in the other. Also, try to balance out expose and exploit weapons. If your weapon is expose--then be sure one or more of your BOs has an exploit weapon--they will use that attack--the friendly combat AI is actually not that bad. Just remember: Right tool for the right job.

There is a large variety of skills for all classes.
Sounds like you would do well with a tactical officer. Yes, there are dual pistols in the game.

Here's an excellent guide to melee combat.
