Pay it forward.....and anger the Exchange Ferengi at the same time!

So, I went to Memory Alpha this evening to create my Aegis set. I took all the data samples from all my alts (and there are several) and sent them to my main. After doing so I discovered I was a little short on one or two data samples. I went to the exchange thinking I could afford a few EC, well I certainly couldn't afford what they were asking. 1.5 mill for 2 data samples.

I decided I could wait. Then I noticed in the zone chat there was a player offering data samples to players, and he was selling to the highest bidder. That kinda annoyed me because this guy was not only price gouging people, but he was kinda rude about it. I decided to act.

If I couldn't make an Aegis set, I was gonna help others do it. I started telling people that I would GIVE them whatever samples they needed if I had them. I made it very clear that I wanted nothing in return. I gave away every single piece of data that I had collected, along with several weapons, some blue, some purple, and a ton of energy credits. By the time it was done, dude was gone and my inventory and bank account were empty.

But I had 8 new people on my friends list, and a lot of people in the game were happy.

I did this not because I wanted "Glory" I did it because I wanted to remind people of something. The Federation has always helped each other, did Picard ask for ten million EC before he would help someone?

Starfleet officers getting on the exchange and acting like latinum hungry Ferengi is just not in keeping with the ideals of Starfleet. So, if you were one of the people I gave stuff to.....please, keep it going, pay it forward.

Let's start acting like Starfleet officers.

Last I saw the Aegis parts were selling about 2 mil EC on the exchange. If people keep the price listed there you may be in trouble but in about 3 weeks I'm quite sure even that price will drop because of an over abundance on those items on the exchange.

No. I prefer to keep acting like the Orion business person that I am. The Syndicate will be happy to supply your 'needs'.... for a price of course.

I did this in the last game I played. I gave random noobs, (less than 3 months old) one or two million Isk (guess what the game was :D) to help them on their way, pocket change for me but a fortune for a noob.

In PVP, I would re-imburse noobs, (less than 6 months) with mega interest if I blew them up, (I would never pod a noob though but I gave them a warning about flying in lowsec with implants in), that taught them a harsh lesson about flying in the more dangerous regions but without the side effect of making them rage-quit beecause they'd lost all they owned. Anyone with more than 6 months experience should know better.

Every time, I told them to pay it forward and do the same for noobs they encountered in the future when they were rich enough to do it.

I made a lot of friends in the game and although, I never became really rich myself, I felt a lot richer for all the friends I had made. Many applied to join my corp later and most paid it forward as I had.

I'm just starting out in this game and have only got to LC5 so far but I intend to do the same here when I can.

IT'S JUST A GAME AND THE MONEY IS NOT REAL. Shame it's not as easy in RL to make money.

I have to agree with you both in reference to EVE and to this game, and life as well. It would be very nice indeed if RL iskies were as easy to make as ingame types.

Me 2. I have that one in my sig for a while now

But...I have always hated how people try to make as much virtual money as they can and then just sit on it. Believe me, there are some real Ferengi playing this game

I've seen it all too often. Toons with billions and more in game currency and everything they own is top spec gear.

Being mega rich is really end game for me and that's when I get bored with the game. Nothing left to work for since you can buy the best of everything on a whim and recycle it without a second thought if it doesn't do what you want.

Exactly. That's why I avoid getting rich:)

I remember after Season 2 landed, there was a fellow hitting up zone-chat on ESD asking basic questions about how to play the game, they'd obviously just started and finished the introductory mission at Vega Colony.

I took him around, showed him where to go, what to do, explained how the "new" injury system worked, how weapons and armor and shields worked, went with him on his first few missions (nabbing the Azura Accolade which I'd forgotten along the way), helped him recruit and train a more efficient away team, helped him develop a back-story for his character, and helped him get in contact with the RP community in-game.

I took him to the exchange, and bought him all new Uncommon Mk II equipment for his ship and all his boffs. After six hours, I left him prepared, equipped, and with a little starting money.

I told him to pay it forward. From what I heard on the Role-playing chat channel in the weeks after, he did, and so did the person he helped, and then she payed it forward.. I lost track of the chain a month ago, but I'd like to think it kept going.

So then why not work a different angle if riches are abundant. The more people you help, the longer they will play the game. I help anyone when ever i can...and none of my toons are rich per say. Paying it forward keeps the game experience positive. That keeps people playing. Its not like you cannot become rich again. Especially in this game.

I commend the OP for very selfless behavior.......I promise if you PvP, and we meet on the battlefield, I will kill you last, and honorably. As I likewise would be honored to die by your blade.

Thank you for posting this. It was because of this thread that I signed into game this morning using my toon stationed at Memory Alpha, paid some attention to the chatter in the chat box, and decided to start giving those data samples I don't immediately require to crafters in need. All it took was a little push.

You said it: "Let's start acting like Starfleet officers." This is the Starfleet way.

Thanks for the inspiration. I hope other players are inspired by this as well.

Well I did both I had 4 people 1 in my old fleet and 3 in my new fleet that I gave the data they needed for the sets. I also answered local chat for samples and made 500,000 twice for one trace. I still play only one toon. So I still have samples to create at least 3 sets. I plan to always keep one set and who knows if my fleet needs another I will donate or maybe I will sale another. I have almost 20 million. How much do I need;)

That said I beleve in free market. This is not I will take my ball and go home if you do this but if they set limits on the exchange for items it would be hard to continue to play for me. Even thou my life in game is not for the exchange. I just dont beleve the MAN should step in and tell me I am charging to much because another player says it is to much. Unless its Gas, Food, heat or health;) If you really dont need it to live then I can charge what I want lol

I do the same thing as well in STO and have since day one. Shoot I even take "newbs" on STF runs with the sole intent of letting them experience it with no pressure to finish it.

On a related note, I really am amazed at the level of greed present in this community to be frank. Now the people are playing toons other than Starfleet I have no issues with it to be honest. But for Starfleet officers - well, it is unacceptable.

I aim to maximise my EC count for my fleetmates.

I've got all the gear I could need on all of my characters, at this point it's all for my Fleet. If one of my fleet mates needs a few million EC? I give it to them, or get them the item myself.

"But you could help the whole STO community!"

Have you seen the behavior of alot of those in the community? I wouldn't want to help that. That'd be like asking me if I want to play on Xbox live, in the Bad Player tiers and put up with all the "smack" talk. No thanks. That aside, you're just begging to be taken advantage of at that point.

The prices for things in the Exchange will drop (particle traces, Aegis gear etc) just like the emblem weapons have dropped, once the demand lowers.

Logic dictates that said giving individual should have enough common sense to be able to determine who is deserving and whom isnt...kinda like santa :D

after all a fool and his money are soon departed.......

That's like saying an entire country is not deserving of aid because a few individuals are corrupt or just a-holes. (Not that I condone giving away money we haven't got like our UK government is doing.)

I know a friend in need can be a real nuisance sometimes :p But sometimes it pays to be someones friend, especially when you've got a fleet mission to complete and none of your fleet are online

I helped someone in Eve a long while back. I recognised his handle and spoke to him here and was surprised to find it was the same guy. Since he's a far higher rank than me in STO, he is helping me now. Karma can come back when you least expect it.

I think the post is more about promoting the idea of helping each other, less about promoting one's own participation in that. I don't see what should be wrong with it. It's no different than actors and models campaigning against animal cruelty, etc.

Don't be such a grumpy old Ferengi. :p

And just for the record, I support what the OP did in game. Its just when you start posting threads about it that it gets a little...well, I'll let each individual fill in their own word. I get what you mean, but it's still "nice to see" and may inspire others to do likewise. Sure it would be better to have a "benefactor" post it, but ... I guess few people would do it. I mean, you've already thanked the generous guy in the chat, why make a thread about it? If at all, it would only get mentioned on related topics.

So I still see it as positive. Makes the community look nicer. :p

The Nagus does have a point, I can agree that a person posting that they aren't looking for glory is a little weird. Let me explain my logic. I wanted to start a discussion on the subject. I could have said that I saw "a guy" giving stuff away, I could have pretended it wasn't me, but I'm not a good liar.

By sharing the story I thought it may inspire at least one player to change the way he looks at the game community. In my mind we are all here because we share a love of either Star Trek or gaming, not EC.
I'm not asking for an exchange NERF or anything like that, I just wanted to make people think a little differently. It's about the community as a whole having a good time. If we don't have a good community then it doesn't matter how neat the next starship is.

I have a Ferengi toon also, but he's still in Starfleet.

    :D

Nope. I actually play an Andorian, Alien, Klingon, and Orion. My forum handle and avatar are specifically crafted for tr...err..."fun"... and are not actually related to my in game characters at all :D
