I'm just starting out with STO and I'm loving it. One thing I do find a bit strange is that there is a proliferation of admirals and vice admirals running around this game. I'm not one to confuse gaming with reality as do some who post here. I just find it difficult to believe that a basically militaristic game as potentially massive as STO wouldn't be more considerate of rank and game play. Perhaps this is something I just haven't encountered yet. I've just made LtCom and newer weapons and devices are now available to me. I'm thinking rang should have an effect n the interaction with other players. Higher ranks should be able to lead groups and dictate targets in both ground and space battles etc....I'm still lovin' this game.:)

Don't worry, the Virus I have manufactured and released into both Qu'Nos and Earth Space Dock will remedy that problem. It is designed to kill anything above the rank of Captain. Painfully.
Wu, the best way to justify this that I have come up with is this: somewhere in space, battles between the Klingon Empire and the UFP are raging. Brave souls on both sides of the conflict are falling, at an alarming rate. In this climate of war, it has become S.O.P. to promote any and all individuals who show the capability to make a difference in the now.
As such, ships and pips are being granted and an accelerated rate. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few...or the one.
Stop worrying about what everyone else is. Realize that everyone else is the ONLY person that has saved the Azura crew, defeted the new doomsday machine, saved LT Paris, and so on and so on...
Everyone goes thru the exact same story and is the hero of that story so they and you get to rise thru the ranks and get rewards and praise.
This isn't a simulated Starfleet where everyone is Lt. Schmoe on picket patrol in some dull safe place, where all the big cool stuff to do was done by KirkPicardJanewaySiskoArcher. Everyone is KirkPicardJanewaySiskoArcher here, just play and enjoy yourself.

NIce.
I look at it this way. There's only one character that made it to VA because of heroic deeds. That's mine. I'm the only one saving Miral Paris, and going back in time. I'm the one that saved Vega colony and the Khitomer from the Borg. This hasn't been done a million times. It has all been done once. By my character.
Every character is the center of their own STO universe. None of those other "admirals" even exist.

This exactly is what i think it was meant to be.....good answer sailor, good answer......

The game requires a certain amount of suspension of disbelief: starting with the fact that you're an Ensign and given command of a vessel. Only in Abramsverse would someone that low be given command of a starship.
Yeah, it doesn't make a lot of sense that there's 200k+ Admirals running around but it doesn't make much sense that there's 200k+ Captains running around either. I think most of us would prefer to top-out at Commodore but we'll never know why we can't - or why we can't even have Commodore as a rank. It probably has a lot to do with CBS, though. The Cryptic team are all Trek geeks like us. They watch Trek episodes at lunch every day. I'm sure they'd want the Commodore rank and less Admirals in the game too if they could have it. Sometimes it's just the way it goes; and you just have to pretend otherwise.
I think Cryotic just looked into the future and saw that they would get Lambasted Greatly if they tried to pick a few Admirals on a World Wide game base out of the many choices available, and decided to *Spread the Wealth instead of *Taking the Heat.

I prefer to see the rank on your uniform as the actual rank.

Isn't the saying "too many chiefs and not enough indians/braves"?
so there.
