STO is a great game, Love what is being done and the way things are going, (here is comes) But there is some problems i would like to see addressed.
like almost ALL mmo's there is only 2 factions. in World of Warcraft you have Alliance and the Horde.
Star Wars galxies you can eather be Rebel Alliance or sided with the Empire.
World of Tanks, 2 teams out to kill each other or capture the opsit team's flag.
You get the point.
EVE Online... 4 factions all working in one comunity together or waring aginst each other.
same with EverQuest.
Shouldn't Star Trek Online be the same way? Star Fleet, Klingon's, Cardasions, Romulans, Breen, The Dominion, ect...
There is countless races factions and species in the relm of Star Trek.
shouldn't we have them all, not just Klingon and Star Fleet?
Wouldn't it be very interesting if there was 4 or 6 or even 10 playable factions, not just 10 playable races on 2 factions.
Next, Will there be more to my ship then just the outside, and some inside? isn't there over 50 decks on a Galxie class star ship, but yet I can only go on 3 of them? I want to be able to explor the ENTIRE ship, not just Crue Deck, Engineering and the Brige. I wanna see it all, Holo deck, shuttel bay, ect...
Also when will it all be brought down to actual scale size. was it intentional to make everything so big? or a mistake in design plan?
almost every ground zone i have been in I feel my 6 foot tall character in 3 ft tall what givs there?
Back to inside ships... only 1 console that is on my dest is active? what gives there? where is the data base computers or replicators on my ship? what about power lvl's ot wepons from inside my ship?
has anyone played Star Trek Bridge Commander? or been inside a Star Wars galxies ship? you can actualy do things in your ship... Items can be placed on the floor, picked up and moved around. in your ship.
Your ship is your home. in your real life home can you not do thiings with your items, or is everything glued down and can not be moved?
Next up, Klingon's need to be nerfed big time.
These ppl's shipd are so damn tough that 1 on 1 they can not even have there shields dammaged. pvp fights should be 10 on 4 when it is Federation vs Klingons. then maby just maby feds would have a chance in pvp to win a round.
Maby Criptic will some day get it together;
But for now thank you for a great game.
While I agree that it would be more interesting to have more factions, I think they should stop at 3 or 4 with a possible neutral faction or it will be impossible to balance and horrible to maintain.
As far as the size of space goes, you can go to far. It almost sounds like you want a 1:1 virtual space with a quadrant of the galaxy. Personally, I would rather not spend several RL weeks moving to my next quest so you can get too big. Mentioning Eve as an example of a large space is good but even Eve can almost be too large. I know I have many terrifying hours transporting stuff through 0.0 with a full support fleet and I don't see it as being worthwhile to have it that large, for now at least.
They have done a hell of a lot of work and made huge improvements to the game, but in the end, it was rushed and it shows. I think we are going to be at least a year out on making it more like Star Trek as far as scale and politics.
We also need to be more careful with our demands since with MMORPGs, it is a real case of "careful what you ask for, you might get it".
The problem with additional factions is that you have to split limited development time between all of them. Besides, it's not like Romulans aren't in the game, you just can't play them. The scale has been addressed by the devs before. The devs have also talked about more functionality and crew roles coming down the line. Again, they have limited resources and can only have so many things in development at a time.
The game seems like Star Trek to me. I'd like additional features, but patience is in order.
I think the base premise of this thread is to broad? "When will STO be Star Trek?" The answer is for some it already is, for others never. The Star Trek experience is as unique as the person you ask, everyone carried something different away from the vast library of books, tv shows, movies, cartoons and comics. There is no set definition of Star Trek since it is different for everyone.
A lits of things you would like to see added to the game, even constructive critisism is a good thing and should be encouraged. However does the lack of these things make the game less Star Trek? To you perhaps and maybe even some others but then again to likely a near equal number the effect on how Star Trek the game is not effect by your ideas.
Now I want the OP to understand that I am not attacking his ideas, I agree with some of them but the title is pure BS.
As for the content of the post. In some ways you are confusing factions with races. While yes ST has a lot of races in it few would actually be considered factions as it where. In my opinion within Star Trek a "faction" would need to be a major alliance or power. Right now I think the current set of two is a good place to start and grow from. MMOs are not like other games, they all grow and STO has some room for growth.
As for the inside of our ships, there is a limit to what can be done here based on game mechanics and even practicality. I mean if you conisder it fun to run around 50 decks of a ship, which BTW would take up a lot of your play time, then enjoy. However Cryptic has to make it fun for everyone and I doubt most people would enjoy such an endeavor for more than a day or two and then likely ignore it or seldom make use of it. As such Cryptic is better off to spend time in other areas of development that might not be as cool for the moment but add more long term play.
World of Tanks, 2 teams out to kill each other or capture the opsit team's flag.
Well. Do you know any battle in WW2 that had three sides fighting each other?
Some limitations are necessary by circumstance or, in this case, historical accuracy. Two sides isn't necessarily a bad thing, it all depends on the scope of the game. Although I do agree that it has gotten a little "out of hand" with all those games who try to imitate the "WoW recipe" in the hopes of similar success. There are also many purely factionless MMOs out there, though. Some way older than even WoW. Does anyone remember Ultima Online, the "grandfather" of contemporary MMOs?
That said, more factions are actually planned! dstahl mentioned something about Romulans, which is cool. It'll take a lot of time until they become playable, though, as the Klingon Empire is still lacking in content and customization. As it makes no sense to introduce a 3rd faction when the 2nd one isn't yet done, they want to flesh out the KDF more before they concentrate on the Romulans. Which is cool, too, considering that a faction is meaningless when there's nothing to do with it, and Romulan players would be bound to have the same issues the Klingons experienced.
Also when will it all be brought down to actual scale size. was it intentional to make everything so big? or a mistake in design plan?
I'm sooo feeling with you on this one. From what I've heard it is due to the pathing AI of the NPCs. Some people also mentioned camera issues, but as the camera works just fine on my small BoP bridge (not to mention other games with more realistically scaled interiors) I'm not really buying into that.
been inside a Star Wars galxies ship? you can actualy do things in your ship... Items can be placed on the floor, picked up and moved around. in your ship.
From what I understand, STO is more "arcade" and has a great focus on combat, whilst SWG is very sandbox and a large amount of its development was dedicated to fleshing out social aspects of the game (up to and including entirely civilian careers).
As SWG shows it is possible to blend the two, but there are quite a number of STO fans who dislike the "simulator" aspect, fearing that their gameplay experience would be affected by an MMO having more options for actually doing stuff with other players. Make of that what you will.
Heh. Roll a Klingon - no, really! On this one you are suffering from "tunnel vision", and I do recommend playing both sides to get a more objective perspective.
What is true is that KDF players usually have more experience with PvP and greater teamplay abilities, simply because the lack of content "forced" them to PvP, whilst the majority of Starfleet captains progressed through PvE playing alone 90% of the time. That makes a huge difference. If you don't believe me, roll a KDF character and experience it for yourself. Including your very distorted perception on the win/loss quota.
You can actually view all the ship specs on this page. Check it out and you'll see that the differences are far lesser than you seem to believe. If you encountered a pimped up ship it seems likely that it was simply upgraded with very advanced equipment - the same stuff that Feds have access to as well, and easier as they get a lot of items tossed at them by missions unavailable to KDF characters.
Believe me, I've encountered virtually invincible Galaxy-class cruisers capable of tanking four Klingon ships at the same time myself.
Next up, Klingon's need to be nerfed big time.

Thier shields don't get damaged for the same reason fed cruiser shields don't get damaged, they use EPtS+TSS to boost thier shield resistance rating to maxium briefly. Any idiot who pays attention (worked for me)can learn to do this in pvp and all classes can access the powers, so no one is left out.
The same can also be done for hull points by using HE or PH + A2sif to boost your hull resistances up to max briefly.
Feds have plenty of chances to learn to play PvP. The forums abound with threads on how to do this that or the other as a fed in pvp. Builds, consoles, equipment tips are evrywhere if you look for it.
Even the KDF has thrown out tips for feds in pvp. All one has to do is look for them and not just drink the coolaid of nerfness.
I think that star trek online has a lot of bugs as every new game does, its only been out in comparison with the other games for a seemingly short period of time. I am a big fan of WoW, I play it every day, and when I heard they were doing a mmorpg of star trek I couldnt be more excited. Anyway my point is star trek online is a new game and they are still working out the kinks and bugs, I for one am very grateful for star trek online and as long as we stay loyal and maybe a little rabid , in a few years we can have a game every bit as successfull as WoW and eve and be proud to have a game to call our own.
Actually ... in SWG you play Rebel, Empire or Neutral.
Neutral is not a faction, it's trying to sit on a fence made up of 2" diameter spikes. You can see where that goes.....
SWG has 2 factions - Rebel and Imperial. If you're not one either, then you don't have a faction. Any factional content requires aligning with one or the other. "Neutral" players even have a "factional helper" system to use, which aligns them temporarily.
Now, with that out of the way.....
I'd definitely like to see a full customization similar to (but better than) what SWG has. The fact that almost everything in the game has a full 3D model and could be used to decorate is AWESOME!
And yet another player asking for the sun itself.
Another player that seems to not have a single clue of what goes into developing a game.
LMAO I agree, Im a second year student in Graphic Arts and Game Design with a minor in computer software programming at Westwood college, and it is VERY challenging to say the least.

We seem to have a different idea of what "faction" means in a game. You make it sound like Neutral characters don't have content in SWG, which simply isn't true.
Let's face it, STO was pushed out the door to meet a deadline imposed by Atari. It didn't matter if the game wasn't finished. All it mattered was that it was released. Has the game improved since launch? Sure, but not enough. This game should have been in developed for a minimum of two years, possibly three before the public even saw it. Instead it was released incomplete and they are finishing it now. It will take another year before it is of the quality that it should have been at launch. The same thing happened with champions. That too is an unfinished mess. I don't know if that one will ever recover. At least star trek is in a little better shape than that one is.
I bought the lifetime because of two things: It's star trek and I knew I'd be playing it for years to come (provided it didn't fail horribly), and that it will take a few years to actually finish it. I could play around with it while I waited.
This game is moving in the correct direction and I am hopeful that within two years it will be a really good quality game that I actually want to spend more time with. Right now it's a hobby that I sometimes fiddle with.
Wouldn't it be very interesting if there was 4 or 6 or even 10 playable factions, not just 10 playable races on 2 factions.
Apparenly your not aware that this game is not even a year old yet. Your also apparently not aware that the KDF still has a ways to go before its a complete experience, even in the Dev's opinion. Your statement above is beyond ridiculous considering the game's age, and the fact that the more factions you have the less attention each actually gets.
Let's face it, STO was pushed out the door to meet a deadline imposed by Atari.
Either way, Cryptic had to AGREE to the terms of the deal, and therefore bear just as much responsibility if they agreed to something they knew they couldnt finish. Also, it probably had much more to do with bonuses for reaching a certain "goal" than being "forced" to do it.
Let's face it, STO was pushed out the door to meet a deadline imposed by Atari. It didn't matter if the game wasn't finished. All it mattered was that it was released.
Technically I think the deadline was imposed by CBS: the license was to deliver a product in x amount of time. Perpetual screwed around with the license for so long that time was running out to get a product out the door. PI couldn't do in 3.5 years what Cryptic did in 1.5.
Shouldn't Star Trek Online be the same way? Star Fleet, Klingon's, Cardasions, Romulans, Breen, The Dominion, ect...
So then you're going to give Cryptic your spare one hundred million dollars so they can quintuple their team size and have the manpower and resources to develop all of those factions? Thanks. We all appreciate it.
Next up, Klingon's need to be nerfed big time.

This would be easier to take seriously if you had a klingon that was beyond Lieutenant. Have you considered that perhaps by comparison you just aren't very good compared to the majority of the players who've levelled fifty times in a faction that launched as PvP-only?
Next up, Klingon's need to be nerfed big time.

P.s. when will we get voices on our npc bo's???
If you play more PvP with your fed and try using teamwork there's no reason that Klingon's won't melt. The reason Klinks are so good at PvP is because, well, that's all they have. I second the person above me who said to play your Klink more. Flying a BoP redefined the way I approach Fed v Klink PvP.
Yeah I agree the OP is unrealistically demanding. However I'll offer my opinion on part of it.
When will STO become more like Star Trek?
Well for me it has a lot of Trek feel already. I am one of those that yearn for more non combat missions. Don't get me wrong, I love a good fight. And the space combat rules in this game. For me though, I think STO will really feel more Trek when the exploration sectors get their revamp. I feel these places are now the black sheep of this game, even more so then the Klingons. These areas are where cryptic can make the Trekiness really shine. This Is where you can also cater to those looking for a less confrontational/war-ish storyline. Oh there should still be confrontation. Just a lot less if it. More sic-fi awesome discovery type stuff. The accolade system can really thrive here. Discovery accolades would be great. Somehow tying the foundry into theses areas would be a great thing to.
I know cryptic has said 2011 is centered on making the game more "Trek". I feel the exploration revamp is where they can make a big leap in that quest. Truly make each sector a place no sto player has gone before.
I think at issue is the question "will sto be able to grow?" the only way I see that really happening is if they continue to hire more talent/devs. The only way an additional faction will work is if a dev team is specifically assigned to that faction. Another way would be to make that faction solely PVP.
If we continue without hiring more devs, then the additional content and bugs will cause STO to implode on itself unless.... They permanently deleted other content to make room for new content.
Neutral is not a faction, it's trying to sit on a fence made up of 2" diameter spikes. You can see where that goes.....

Now, with that out of the way.....
I had a Smuggler in SWG, who made an excellent living not working for the Rebels OR the Imperials.... He also made an excellent living working with the Rebels AND Imperials, I haven't played in a long time, but I BELIEVE Smugglers Alliance pilots could also shoot at whatever they wanted.

Unfortunately this sound advice (and other good advice about PvP in this thread) will fall on deaf ears. Klink shields aren't any better than Fed shields, they just learned how to play. Seems every single time someone is told "learn to play" or told to look at the good advice on the forums, they plug their ears and continue to whine for nerfs.
Even Stormy essentially told them L2P (though he did it in a nice, informative way) and these people still whined for the nerfs. I guess if you can't adapt, might as well whine for the difficulty bar to be lowered.
STO does have alot of room to grow, and to much room on alot of Stations and Ships. ship inside scale needs to be reworked. One of you said I need to have higher then Lt on my Klingon side, you are right I do.
The problem is I do not know where to go to lvl other then PvP runs, and that gets old after a while because pvp que is realy fubar at the moment and it takes 4ever to get in a bg.
Yes i do now what it takes to create a game and so cryptic should have known as well. if atari (a small co themsellves) is backing a smaller company then maby someone else should have produced the game, say activision, or ea games?
Please people do not get me wrong I love STO and spend alot of time playing and even have a life account,
I am only saying there is alot of work waitting to be done. Focous more on ingame fixes and less on C-store items. Give Klingon's more mission's to lvl with.
Here is an idea, Instead of giving a Klingon character for a new player to start on Star Fleet side to play, how about make it a KDF starter character with an option to defect to SF side at a higher lvl? or something along those lines. Maby even make that option for SF players to be able to defect to KDF side after a certan lvl of play. But of corse it yould be a 1 way defect.
Thank you, for all the responces and I hope more is to come....
Here is an idea, Instead of giving a Klingon character for a new player to start on Star Fleet side to play, how about make it a KDF starter character with an option to defect to SF side at a higher lvl?
Actually, I very much like factions to be distinctive and unique. Species and starship limitations are a part of that. Aside from the fact that few KDF characters would realistically have a reason to defect - which is especially true for the Fed-hating Orions, who surely would be rolled the most were such an option to become available.
Not to mention the whole weirdness of a defector not only skipping the Academy and security checks but also being handed his own starship and crew the minute he changes allegiance...
The devs has said that they are strongly considering adding more factions (Romulans) when the KDF is on par with the Federation and they are happy with both factions not before.
I'm glad that they aren't just adding a half a dozen factions that has no content and focuses on completing the existing factions before moving on to the next.
I am only saying there is alot of work waitting to be done. Focous more on ingame fixes and less on C-store items. Give Klingon's more mission's to lvl with.
At some point people are going to have to understand that game companies function just like every other company: they hire specific people for specific tasks. The person from QA fixing bugs is not the same person from Artistic whose making a new ship skin, and that's not the same person who's writing a mission, and that's not always the same person who's making the new tech for said mission. And so on.
Think of it in terms of a restaurant: you have a host/hostess who seats you. You have a waiter who takes your order and brings your food. You have chefs in the back making the food. A bartender mixing your drinks. Busboys cleaning tables. Dishwasters doing dishes and pots and pans. All those jobs are needed to make a successful restaurant. You can't easily shift an Arts guy to QA to focus on in-game fixes any more then you can shift a bartender to chef to get the food out quicker. Everyone has a job and the company functions best when everyone is doing their job.

That's just back-story. I can make a Human or Vulcan with the alien template on the KDF and I can make many KDF characters for the Fed side. Heck, I have a science captain who has a Klingon, Cardassian, Orion, Breen, and Gorn on his ship. It's not hard to "pretend" they're all there because they defected.

Another "I want everything now!" thread?
STO WILL have more factions as time moves on, if one can't wait for them well.....
Plus c'mon the game isn't even a year old...I'd expect real upgrades around year 2.

Another player that seems to not have a single clue of what goes into developing a game.
LMAO I agree, Im a second year student in Graphic Arts and Game Design with a minor in computer software programming at Westwood college, and it is VERY challenging to say the least.
Either way, Cryptic had to AGREE to the terms of the deal, and therefore bear just as much responsibility if they agreed to something they knew they couldnt finish. Also, it probably had much more to do with bonuses for reaching a certain "goal" than being "forced" to do it.
So then you're going to give Cryptic your spare one hundred million dollars so they can quintuple their team size and have the manpower and resources to develop all of those factions? Thanks. We all appreciate it.
This would be easier to take seriously if you had a klingon that was beyond Lieutenant. Have you considered that perhaps by comparison you just aren't very good compared to the majority of the players who've levelled fifty times in a faction that launched as PvP-only?
If you play more PvP with your fed and try using teamwork there's no reason that Klingon's won't melt. The reason Klinks are so good at PvP is because, well, that's all they have. I second the person above me who said to play your Klink more. Flying a BoP redefined the way I approach Fed v Klink PvP.
As for BOff voice overs....no
When will STO become more like Star Trek?
+1
This is it absolutely.
If we continue without hiring more devs, then the additional content and bugs will cause STO to implode on itself unless.... They permanently deleted other content to make room for new content.
Not to mention the whole weirdness of a defector not only skipping the Academy and security checks but also being handed his own starship and crew the minute he changes allegiance...
What is that supposed to solve, anyways?
I'm glad that they aren't just adding a half a dozen factions that has no content and focuses on completing the existing factions before moving on to the next.
/sigh
Another "I want everything now!" thread?
STO WILL have more factions as time moves on, if one can't wait for them well.....
Plus c'mon the game isn't even a year old...I'd expect real upgrades around year 2.
