buying the game?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Ok, im considering paying for the game, however i would like a little information before i waste my money;) Ok, this game seems to have a full version in which you can buy, and then a subscription you can pay for. Now my questions are pretty straightforward...

1. If you buy the game do you have to subscribe to continue playing.
2. What does the subscription offer?
3. if you buy the full version, do you get all game content perminantly?
4. Is this a scam where you pay buy the game, and you have to pay to play? I hate games like that. If you buy it, you shouldnt have to pay for it on a monthly basis.
5. Any general feedback on the full version/subscription would be welcome...

Thank you.

    Thank you.

    1. After purchasing the game you will get 30 days free trial upon creating your account. You may have to register your credit card during this stage, but nothing with leave the account until the 30 days are up. You can track your subscription from the website's 'Your Account' page.

    2. Unlimited access to the game for 30 days.

    3. You get the same access to the game content as any other subscriber. Is content taken away over time? No, not that i am aware of if that is what you are asking. Maybe you heard about the 'Nuking' option :p

    4. No its not a scam, its an MMO. I already see where you are going with this. Your opinion sounds like someone who has yet to venture out into the real world, have a job and work for a living, where everything should be free and others should work for you for nothing. I brought a car, i couldn't believe i had to pay for petrol, insurance and tax after that. Same goes for a phone, house. Life is a scam....
Once you buy the game, new content follows and continues to follow later. You might even have to buy expansion packs as well. MMO's are like a relationship, and just like a relationship, time and money does get invested into the journey. Just like Wow, just like Aion, Eve, and so on. Maybe you should consider an Xbox instead, but beware, after you buy some games, there is a chance of DLC, and i can imagine you wouldn't want to pay for that. If i come across as a little pedantic, its because i am being. I get annoyed with that "I hate games like that. If you buy it, you shouldnt have to pay for it on a monthly basis" type of comment. No one likes to part with their money. But i don't expect the Cryptic team to work for nothing either.

    5. I played for a few months, decided that if i still loved the game like i did at that point, i would get a Life Time Subscription, a lump sum which effectively means i no longer pay a monthly fee, plus a few nice bonus items too. I'm very happy with how the game is developing from where we were at Beta to where we are now. I think 2011 will be a great year for STO players.
Certain editions of the game are available, each with various bonus in-game items. Special character unlocks, weapons, pets, etc. Decide what suits you best. In terms of subscription feedback, you pay via a credit card and can cancel when you wish. For further info, click on support and follow the steps to chat to an online Atari employee. When it came to finding out more about the Life Time Sub, the person was pretty helpful indeed. Done via an MSN Messenger style service, its probably the best way for you to get answers to whatever it is you need.

Personally i love this game. After 5 years of Warcraft, STO is exactly what i needed. I'm not even a Trekie yet, but i'm fast becoming one :)

Yes, although as Green117 said, you do get the first 30 days free. And you have to have a credit or debit card.

Access to the game server whenever it's up. The server is up 24/7 365, except when it's brought down once or twice a week for server maintenance or to add new code to the game. This usually happens between 3AM - 6AM PST.

Also, according to the Free Demo Page, the demo version is limited to just a few starting missions. The full version unlocks all of the in game content and gives you more character slots.

Yes. The game content doesn't go away. The STO team, just like the teams of all other MMOs, is constantly adding new content to the game. That never goes away.

It's not a scam. This is the way that all Western Premium MMOs are. You buy the game box and you also pay the monthly subscription fee.

I was extremely critical of the state the game was in when it was first launched back in February 2010. Since then the development team has done an incredible job fixing bugs and adding in a ton of content that was specifically requested by players here on the forums. I have no reason to believe that won't continue.

In my opinion, for whatever it's worth to you, if you can afford it Star Trek Online is definitely worth paying for.

thanks for the feedback, it is appreciated... i still am a little unclear about subscribing... are you required to pay the monthly subscription fee? or can you play without it? I know im kinda failing here, but still id like to know what im getting into before i go throwing money into something... if i have to pay monthly, odds are im not going to be able to afford it, as a 1 time payment maybe, but on a tight budget like mine, adding another monthly payment to my plate isn't going to make my life easy... So, is the subscription a requirement, or is that optional?

A subscription for any P2P is a requirement, the only optional thing here is if you wish to play. The way i look at adding another monthly payment on to my plate is how much i end up saving in the long run. I'm doing a degree, and while everyone else is drinking their student finances to death, i'm playing STO when my work is done. Yes, i'm socially inept but a model student :p
If you want something enough, you'll find a way to afford it. Did you try the demo? If not, head there first (Peregrine's Link) and although its short, it will give you a little flavour as to what to expect. But its only a little taste mind you. Personally i would like to see the Demo extended further. Ship to ship combat in this game is still today as epic and refreshing as it was the first time i played it.

Darkillusion. The saddest person i've discovered on these boards for some time now. Apparently he/she doesn't like STO, yet spends far too much time on the website, trolling here and there hoping to unlock some accolade or something. We get that you don't like the game, but really, is your life that pathetic that this is how you spend your time? You surely must have something better to do. And if not, maybe its time you actually did something about that, found yourself a new hobby and grew up a little. Silly Rabbit...

if you want to try the game out you can msg me or anyone really and they can send you a buddy key, the key allows you to check things out and see if you like the game, there is a demo too.

Im not sure if you got all your questions answered, but yes you do have to pay a subscription fee every month, or you can do it for longer and pay a little less then if you got it for only one month.

There is a life time subscription but its a lot of cash...

Do you have any idea about the things you type? We get it, you don't like it, so please just go. There is absolutely no need for you to remain on a forum based on a game you have no interest in playing. And don't call people that enjoy STO sad. The only sad person i can see here is the one who dislikes something, yet spends far too much time around said thing. Grow up Darkillusion.

yeah, and I hate these standard replies to "I hate games like that". Real life isn't always so peachy for everybody else as it may be for you, mayby that's why they have a difference in opinion? Nevertheless, you are entitled to your opinion and I don't begrudge you personally for it. After all, I don't know you, so any argument will never be conclusive as it would be based on assumptions.

To be fair, regardless of his previous posts, he was answering the OP. The guy/ gal asked for opinions and opinions were provided. In my experience it's always a good idea to look for negative responses about any services your thinking of buying. Helps prevent potential disappointment later.

my reply to the op? the game is now where it should have been at launch. However I still believe it plays like a single player game with a chatroom, true online multiplayer opportunities in this game can be scarce, I made it to RA6 and I think I played with other players less than a dozen times. Some missions are well scripted and like all rpg's customisation is fun, but individual loot items will not change the appearance of your ship. LIke many rpg's the game can feel repetitive, but then they have released the foundry to see if the fan base can do any better.

I left the game after it's first month because I got bored with it.I came back this month, and yes, it's a lot better, but in my opinion it's still like playing a single player game. I may stick around longer, and I may not. Server problems have prevented me from playing for the last two weeks and I'm certain that I won't get a refund for that. Which brinbgs me to another point, a trawl through the forums should give you an idea of tech support, beware the fanbois.

In the end of the day if what you read don't seem like something that'll bother, then sure, get your sci fi fix here, god knows there arent many good sci fi games out there anyhow, but if your looking for an excellent game for the money, well, think long and hard first. either way, shop around first, I think you may be able to get the 'game' itself pretty cheap if you look around.
