How do the Devs determine which names...

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
...are viable, and which are not?

Enterprise, Excelsior, Defiant, Voyager are all common sense, they're the name sake vehicle of three shows, and all four are prominent figures in canon.

But what about other names that are restricted, such as Monitor? So it was mentioned in book, ok, but so was Challenger, and it's available. As is Prometheus itself, and that even got on screen time.

I've seen an NPC USS Columbia and a player USS Columbia side by side in game, so I don't think it's that...

So how do the Devs determine which names are acceptable and which are not?

Cryptic doesn't: CBS does. All of the "Hero" ships are restricted. Everything else is fair game.

Actually Normandy was the random name I got on my Akira.

That's what I thought as well, but in trying a couple of different names for various ships I've found them blocked, and not just the obvious Hero ships either. Hence the curiosity with regards to the standards.

Also happened to be the site of a bloody battle not too far into the past. A suitable name for a ship, Mass Effect not withstanding. Don't try to enforce an argument so unbelievably thin.

This reminds me of the people who were saying the USS Asgard was a Stargare reference.

I'd wager there are quite a few people here who have never played Mass Effect (or watched Stargare).

I've never found any canon name (even book canon) that is restricted, aside from the ships that were "Stars" on screen.

So I can't imagine why the Monitor is restricted.

    Is the Merrimac? :)

Oddly enough Merrimac is not restricted. When I asked a Dev about this they didn't know why Monitor was locked out.

I must say, with whatever system they use, thank cryptic that viable names aren't determined by what other players have already chosen.

I know anything to do with religion is also verboten. There is a religious publication that uses the word "monitor" in the title. As monitor itself is a generic term ( a lot of news publications also use it in their titles), it might just be an oversight on their part.

That's interesting. So if I start a religious magazine and call it "Enterprize," would they start blocking those? :p

I don't even know if that's the reason, but you're welcome to try. I for one, will convert. :p

I called one of my Klingon Raptors the "IKS Potemkin."

Heck, we even had a "steps of Odessa" sequence after a moderator teleported me to Sol. :D

It is amazing how many tries to read I.K.S. Hedoth as I.K.S. He Doth...
As in "Speak of the devil and he doth appear".

Agreed. Personally I think purposely mis-spelling the name of your ship just so you can have something called the Enterprise/Voyager/Defiant is just circumventing a rule set in place by the development team of the game.

Also, it makes you look like a complete tool (especially considering that the ACTUAL Enterprise is still in service).

I've been guilty of calling 2 ships USS Galactica and USS Serenity when I started playing this game, only to find out that there are tons of others using those names:) Then I went to call ships after famous bassguitars, named my intrepid after voyager's voyage home (USS Homewards) and I'm sure it's not hard guessing what species my captain of the USS Noble Greed is (currently captaining the USS Discovery tho).

I think the fun comes from using ship names that might mean something to the individual or as an inside joke. My first character all had ships that made reference to the band Genesis -- both musicians in the band and songs. It was enjoyable to fly around in the USS Gabriel or USS Salmacis because I figured no one else would be doing that.

Lol, that's great. I might do something similair with the band Steely Dan. I always name my runabouts USS Alembic ;) Sounds pretty cool, and it's named after something I'd like to have in the future as much as my own runabout:)

Also had a science ship named USS Endorphine, what should've been an attempt at humour by my vulcan captain. At least, I think vulcans don't produce that vital substance, I mean they do have logic:)

You people do know that Star Trek and most other sci fi pretty much did not invent those ship names in the first place right? :p

Defiant, Enterprise, Prometheus, Monitor, Normandy, Voyager, all those names pretty much existed as names of warships long before Star Trek or Sci-Fi was even concieved of. :p

The ship and character naming have been the most negative aspect in STO to me.....I hope on day Cryptic becomes Naming-TRIBBLE and force people to actually use their minds to think of a ship name....

With the sucess of ME2 though Normandy became the most over used ship name ever in this game for awhile. You were gurantueed to see one in Fed space pretty much.

do you have nothing better to do then attempt to insult people? do you not have good enough internet connection to go play the game and stop being annoying.
