A Cash Shop AND P2P?!?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Ok, I've been playing this for awhile, so I'm no stranger to the game. Why bother having a cash shop at the same time as make everyone pay to play it? Seriously, it's like we're being TRIBBLE not once but twice. I keep hopeing for it, but just not seeing it. For this game to go to F2P. Don't worry folks, I won't be holding my breath on this. But just be mindful of how much more your spending each moth for a game that takes little to no time to get to max level, and then your just sitting in orbit waiting for a group to start so you can finish up those two end game missions. (I for one got tired of people quitting either as we got started, or midway through so I never got to finish any of them.)

Question for Cryptic: How you guys likeing those gold ladden pockets of yours? Yeah, some of us have done the math. Greedy bastiges.

even WoW has a item shop. Most P2P MMO's have an item shop now. Subscription prices have not changed in a decade, and instead of changing the sub prices, companies are now adding these item shops. So instead of forcing you to pay more, they give you the option. There is nothing in the C-Store that gives you an advantage over another.

I wouldn't know about what Blizzard has beyond their lame attempt to make the old world look new again. In either case, in my opinion. If they're going to use a cash shop, why not put something useful in there besides tribbles? May as well go all out in this case.

Many people find the idea of buying "useful" items to be dangerous: IE, the people with the most money would have all the best gear. To avoid that the C-Store only sells fluff items that have no, or only minor, impact on game play. That's the best way to balance out a game that caters to those with a lot of disposable income and those with very little.

but if they add anything in there that would really effect the game besides aesthetic appeal there would be a huge uproar from the community. Then people would be forced to pay more money to be able to have good gear or good ships. I like the way cryptic uses the C-Store (well they have made some bad timing decisions on certain items) and I also love the fact that you can earn most of those rewards in game without paying a cent. Some people find the stuff in the C-Store to be awesome. I personally have purchased some costumes, bridge packs, and even some emotes. Being a lifetime member, I like to continue to contribute to the game.

Nobody is making you buy anything from the C-Store.

And we were already told that STO isn't going F2P because of the agreement with CBS.

Nothing has ever been mentioned about the agreement with CBS and why STO won't go F2P. That's simply fan speculation.

Exactly. Personally I pretty much just ignore the C-Store.

Whatever the case or not, we have official comments that STO isn't going F2P anytime soon, which is a good thing.

In fairness that could change very easily at almost any time.

Like the time 3DO justified charging people $30/month to player Meridian (almost 3x the previous price) by claiming they were developing another online game and using those funds to do so. Suprise suprise, no such development ever went into production.

The moral of the story is just because a company says something doesn't mean its accurate.

Time will tell in this case.

STO isn't a big game, and it would likely have a hard time paying for itself on subscriptions alone; especially given how many lifers there are. The devs need money to keep adding content at the rate that they are; but raising the sub fee would only drive people away. So we have a cash shop.

    Every little helps.

Yes, this thread again. What he meant was this is not the first time people have voiced these same ideas and worries, and probably won't be the last.

Also there is a search function. Maybe before starting your new revolutionary thread you could use it and find out if it's all been said 1000 times before.

Yes and no, they do sell a few vanity pets and one mount, and you can not access it ingame. And they certainly do not spend equal amount of time releasing new useless TRIBBLE on it as Cryptic does.

Cryptic on the other hand have actually fooled enough ppl with their item shop to make it a GREAT cash hog for them.

The more we buy from the C-store the less REAL content we will get because they will just spend increasingly more time on new and useless stuff for the C-store that we by all rights should have gotten for free because we already pay subs!

Cryptic still does not have a dedicated team for the c-store content, they still use the regular devs and thus waste precious time there instead of having every dev being devoted to the proper updates that we are so sorely lacking.

Look at season 3 for a prime example, yes there is a few decent things in there but the vast majority of it were either fluff or mission replay and some "fun for the first time" missions in Pi Canis....

And now they have the audacity to release the foundry, further reducing the need for THEM to make content for us, and on top of that they make us PAY to use it!?!

oh the humanity!!!! People have been asking for a UGC since pre launch. People want to make their own star trek missions. Let them, gives us more content. No where have the devs said that they will stop making content. They will continue to do the weekly missions. which is unseen in any other MMO. And before you say it, the only reason they are not having weekly missions in December is because of season 3 (bug fixes and what not, which we have seen several of), and because many people take time off work because it is the holidays. Yes thats correct, the devs are people too, and they take time off of work, and thats something we have to deal with.

As someone who spent 5 months playtesting Cataclysm for Blizzard I think we have a very different idea of what useless TRIBBLE is. :)

This really is the same old thread again. I don't know how anyone who is this unhappy with a product would keep spending money on it. This is a game. It is supposed to be fun. Anyone who isn't having fun should stop paying for it.

First the only thing I would Slightly agree with this guy is the Gal X is in the C store. I got one...HOWEVER you can get it via other people subscribing the game cause you invited them.

This isnt as bad as before, because the Defiant refit can cloak, so its not the only ship the feds can get that cloaks.

If you dont like the C store, dont use it. I think its adding a lot of fun stuff yo my game, stuff ya dont need to play, but makes it fun. I would just like to get more use out of the enterprise with the grappler hooks...

I take it all back! the klings are getting a new ship that totally ****es me off...its setting a BAD president for more pay money for the uber ships...I can see in 6 months Cryptic canceling its life time sub members and having everyone pay...maybe throw some flashy items at the old life time subscribers to hush them up...this is a sad day.
