- HELP - Formating PC - What will happen to Digital Download content and characters?

Hey people, so, I am having major problems with my computer and I may need to wipe my system clean with a format, If I do this, will I need to re-purchase the digital download or just download it again.

Also, I know my character's are on the server, but if I format my PC, what will I lose and should anything be backed up?

When i google for this kind of question I found some answers but by posting my query here, I am hoping to get a better idea of what I need to do.

Now, of to find an EVE forum to ask the same question. :(

Having had this happen to me nothing will happen excpet a big headache and a lot of time. Everything important is actually saved Cryptic server side so you will loose no character info. Once you purchased a copy of the digital download you have it forever. You should just be able to go to the site and redownload it. It's the same as having bought a disk copy. Once you own the disk you always own it. Digital is the same.

Hope this helps and sorry about the headache. I have been there and done that so I feel for you.

Thanks for the info, it does help and it is a relief to know that my tribble collection is safe and I won't have to start again :)

The only thing you may have to back up is screenshots, assuming it works the same with a disc as the digital copy.

there is a way to back up a bunch of files before hand, and transfer them to your new computer...which only serves to minimize download time.

but worst case is that you have to download everything again...nothing character or account related will be lost.

I'm not sure if your keybinds, gameplay/graphics options, or power loadouts are saved, anyone who can comment on that?

Yeah I am going to format mine tomorrow, I also have the digital download, here is what I am doing:

    1. Copy the setup.exe (the original digital download) to my portable drive
    2. Copy the entire STO directory to my portable drive
    3. Format
    4. Install STO from the setup.exe
    5. Overwrite the entire STO folder with my copy of the STO folder

This will ensure that all my stuff is exactly as it is now and no downloading will be required :)

You don't need to run setup.

Just back up your sto folder and copy it to the new machine. Run the regular exe and it will fix itself all up.

I've just learned my computer may not need formatting after all, yay.

I thought I had some serious mal-ware or virus issues but my ISP says my connection is "intermittently" failing and now I have to wait 48-72 hours to see if they can fix it.

Till then I have to not only put up with STO's server disconnections but my own, I can barely play for 5 minutes without seeing those big red words in the middle of my screen.:(
