I think it would be awesome to around the minimap to have a heading indicator (0 (360) degrees based off of the north part of the map). This would be very useful if you are in a group of people and the person in charge would be able to give very simple and quick orders on where to go and who to attack.
So
Heading (x and y axis)
0-90 would be North-East
90-180 would be East-South
180-270 would be South-West
270-0 (360 in case u are confused =P) would be West to North
Mark (z axis)
1 would be 90 degrees straight up (or as far as we can go which i think is 65 degrees currently)
2 would be 45 degrees up
3 would be 45 degrees down
4 would be 90 degrees down (or as far down as we can go, which again 65 degrees)
Actually what might be more trek like would be something like "go to sector B7". Minimaps would have grids on them with the top row being letters, the left row being numbers.
Headings are usually based on the ship's position, not what's around them. Thought it would be interesting to somehow incorporate it.
I'm talking about realistically in game. If you are in an instance with you friends (not sector space), the easiest way to create a logical heading that everyone would understand would be to have 0 degrees be north on the map

want realism, get rid of the space drag and make gravity have some meaning. would be nice if i could fly a starship as opposed to a submarine.
If you want realism go apply for a job at NASA.
The ships in STO fly exactly like the ships in the Star Trek TV shows and movies fly. If you don't like that then perhaps you shouldn't be playing a Star Trek game.

Or play one of the later games in the Elite series, either Frontier Elite 2 and Frontier First Encounters if Nasa is abit much.
Anyways if I remember right, STrek uses 2 bearing systems, one is relative to a point in the Galaxy (the centre I think) and the other relative to the ship, and also then uses Sector grids, and since each Sector in game (not Sector Block, I mean the next one down from that) is a 4x4 grid, just do something like Vulcan Sector Grid A1 which would be where Sol is.
It would be neat if only to hear my Helm shout out, " Aye Aye, Helm to 107" or some such from time to time but I hardly think its a needed gimmick at this time. Still would be neat.
Of course I one of theose silly players that would love a cut-scene of my crew screaming everytime I use RAM.:)

It would just be a little thing around your minimap for if your in a group, the group leader can give very quick and easy orders on where to go or which group of enemy's to attack. Its not really about realism, it would just make things a lot easier for group leaders instead of shoot that guy to the left! NO YOUR OTHER LEFT GAH!!!!!
A lot of people playing the game can't even click and auto-pilot successfully. You want them to start having to think 3 dimensionally to get where they need to go now?

haha so true, but it wouldn't be a mandatory function

That would be perfect, more so in Pvp as well when not everyone uses voicechat (like me, not gonna start anytime soon) and typing is abit slow, click a group designate button then click on the target that everyone can switch to by clicking on it (or it'll be the next target using the cycle target button).
Also good for giving directions for newbies, group briefly, target the system in question on the map, then they know where it is.

exactly, would be very useful in PvP especially when you are not using voice chat. Instead of having to type "attack the guy to the left", or "regroup over by this place", you could just type" turn 175 mk 2".
Would also be useful in voicechat and also add a bit to RP

Hah, we could have used this during the "Blood Pi Canis" event. I ended up using an imaginary clock face to direct the assault groups towards the freighters because that was the first thing that came to my mind.

That is basically the idea here, just more trek like =P
what we need on the maps is a x,y (A,0 - Z,9) grid position with waypoints ( for space they can sert them as the relative middle on the z axis on the instance and for secor space active visual tracking of selected location.)

You sunk my Battleship!
j/k. Couldn't resist.
hahaha i didn't even think about that, good one

It doesn't sound like you've watched much star trek.

Have your allies target you, and when they fire, it will auto target your target. It's pretty easy, and unbelievable that more people don't do it.
