So even if you were allowed to make longer... Was against the rules and could earn you an infraction.
The change is simply making it clearer.
Lots of truth in this posting.
We had to give infractions to people who did not read the forum rules and instead used the space that the forum software allowed. This way, we do not have to worry about punishing folks that do not read the rules anymore and the ones who still have the "old" sigs can more easily avoid to be re-punished for going for more than five lines.

While we are on the subject... Edit out the part about pictures in the signatures being 500x150?
Because it is really confusing some people.
*hugs her infraction for signature naughtiness* MINE! MINE! MINE!

I got one for it...
But then again, now that I admitted it, some body will give me an infraction for admitting I got an infraction, thus bringing the infraction wheel full circle.

I had mine shortened by a line once (though no infraction) so it's good to see it forced to five lines. Always annoyed me that mine got shortened but i'd see so many others with sigs that went waaaay over the five line limit. This is a change for the better IMO.
Well, clearly there is something weird going on, as my signature is allowed to be 6 lines. Of course, with the width of the signature editor being different from the width of the forums, maybe it's a character limit? That would make a lot more sense.
Guys, breaking the forum rules to 'make a point' will only and only result in more infractions. PLEASE keep in mind that after you gathered up 20 points - you are removed from the forums forever.
The issue remains that the length of signatures the forums physically allow varies from what they display. The width of the signature editing box can be modified, making a 4 line signature appear to be 3, or even 2 lines, or perhaps even 6 or 7. And with no hard limit until 10 lines, people are going to get warnings/infractions without realizing it.
Edit: For example, my current sig (the three quotes) is exactly 5 lines long when I click the "Edit Signature" option. But if I widen the editing window, it gets all the way down to 3 - at approximately the width of the forums.
About time that more attention is paid to that. Now please forbid quoting in sigs as well. Sigs like Felderburg's, that take up twice to three times as much space as the actual post, only result in reduced readability of topics.
The main content of topics should be the (on topic) posts, not elaborate signatures.

That's... a good point. But I like the quotes, I find them amusing, and they fit in the 5 lines.
What I find more irritating is when someone starts a sig as if they're continuing their post, only to find that they're making an entirely separate point.

I'm seeing a total of ten lines in that sig. I've got a quote in my sig too, you don't need the huge quote boxes for them.

That's true, I copy pasted from my old sig. I thought they were the quotes that had the little arrows directing to the original post, but apparently I didn't keep that part for some reason.

Thanks (I think) for clearing that up. Still think that 8 lines would be reasonable instead of just 5.
I found a couple of line in mine that I did not realize were there ... no text .. just a couple of "black" periods ... After reading this thread I also eliminated an additional line.
( A note to Cryptic ... sorry I had no idea. At one time my sig was well within guidelines. Always happy to comply with the rules on the forum).
Question to throw out: if you have a really long website link (that is allowed per forum rules) and you use the code to embed it in a short word (like Alecto's links to STO forum threads), how does that affect the length? If the link itself is 2 lines long, but you put it in a word, and make your sig 5 lines long with the word, is the sig 5 lines, or 6?
Question, (which has probably already been answered and I just missed it) why are the signature rules so much more restricting here than on Champions? (no images) I mean, I know its a different department but come on, some people want to show some Star Trek/fleet pride here.
Hmm ok.... When you put it like this I think I gonna leave my untouched
Since I haven't changed the signature lately I probably missed the signature change cause of it.
Just wondering of curiosity...
Did Cryptic or anyone else announce the news/info about the rule change of the signature change on the head page ?
I just recieved a warning, because I had no idea it was a new rule and choosed to ignore it... Seems Cryptic just running TRIBBLE-tactics here... Lovely development company...
Give him a warning for not knowing.
Honestly I have better things to do then to read the rules of conduct all day, just to see some minor changes.
Remind me again why I play this game and support Cryptic please
The rules have always said there was a 5 line limit.
There was no change other than them enforcing the rule more.
Before you could put as many line as you wanted and break the rules. Now you are limited to following the rules set in place.
So the only one at fault here was you for not reading the rules.

And then knowing what the rules were you still didn't edit it.
So the warning was justified.
However now the only way you can get an infraction for signature violations is if you put some nasty stuff in it.

Although the width when I edit my signature is different from the width of the actual forums, so I hope that doesn't become an issue.

Yeah, I would have preferred the rules be edited to fit the mechanics, but as long as the length matches, that's all right.

TRIBBLE, now you got room for ANOTHER quote

Now I'll never change my sig. It stays as is.

Huh??
My signature got more then 5 lines, what are you talking about ?
Actually... You should edit it.
