In the typhoon class thread in fed cruisers, this video of one of the trailers was posted:

there are A LOT of ships in that video that i dont see now, many of which are better than some we have now.
my personal favorite is the ship that cuts from left down to the bottom of the screen with the triangular partial saucer, that ship is EPIC. and the only ship that we currently have in the game in 1:11 is the majestic, all those ships look crazy, especially the one lower left of center.
What happened to these designs?!

Is it possible that we could see these maybe slipping in later on?
Thanks

Heck, there's a couple I wouldn't mind seeing myself in game.
Indeed, most of the designs and environments seen in this trailer are from Perpetual's work on Star Trek Online, before the game was taken up by Cryptic. Much has changed since then.
0:28 the sovereign model with the bar thing across the nacelles, i like that little addition
1:01 (bottom) that one does look cool
1:11 pretty much ALL the ships at that little gathering there
So, if CBS is the all powerful, all owning diety of anything STO, why can't Cryptic, who is developing STO under their license use these ships or other designs?
Perpetual developed alot of these starship designs, under license from CBS...So, knowing CBS, they own them and the soul of whatever computer graphic animator that created them. (I'm sure the poor sap is still locked in some basement storeroom over at CBS).
Isn't it kind of like the UGC, anything we make with it, belongs to Cryptic, which belongs to CBS? (And in the off chance they decide to make a new TV show and they decide to use said content we created, they are allowed to come to our homes and kidnap us in the middle of the night ...)
PS,
I know it's been explained why (lag) but it still irks me that we don't have the exploding space debris for starships like in this trailer....every time I see that Galaxy get pummeled, I wish I wish I wish...
Well - they did. The astute viewer will note that the parts for the Sovereign variant (minus the rollbar between the nacelles) IS in-game, as a combination of Sovereign-variant parts and a Galaxy-variant saucer. Including the notches on the side of the saucer...
The ship with the hollow saucer - well, no Star Trek ship EVAR had a hollow saucer. Sure, it makes for a neat visual with the whole "peace sign" vibe going on... obviously CBS decided not to. Remember it's CBS, not Cryptic, that has final say on what is or is not in-game.
Sure, CBS has the OP rights to the designs - ever stop to think that CBS may have decided against them for whatever reason? Personally, I don't like the "Let's blame Cryptic for TRIBBLE not being in-game" attitude when it's CBS CORP with final say.
As for other designs not owned by CBS.,..guess you've never heard of copyright, have you? US copyright law says that once a work is published in any form, the author has a legal copyright right then and there. Cryptic CAN'T use anything they don't have the rights to, or they'd be liable for infringement. The stuff included from the Expanded Universe in-game has mostly come from - guess who? - Pocket Books, a WHOLLY-OWNED SUBSIDIARY of CBS Corp. Therefore, CBS HAS THE LICENSE for them - which is the ONLY reason there's a Luna-class in-game - wholly designed for a contest promoting ST:Titan, with the design becoming IP of Pocket Books.
Get it now?
Now you know why Cryptic reserves the right to review anything created in the Foundry before it goes public - it's not only being checked for TOS violations, but CBS gets a chance to chime in, too.
Yes, anything created in the Foundry becomes IP of Cryptic/CBS - the creators using the Foundry won't receive any compensation that Cryptic doesn't give them That was brought up before the Foundry went Live - and answered then. While they're not gonna come kidnap anyone (I think...), the person who used the Foundry to create the story probrably won't get any compensation. Cryptic/CBS has the OPTION to do so, but it's certainly not required.
Cryptic needs to start producing new ships.
Why?
Think about it - just what does a "new ship" bring into the game, besides a new visual? Underneath the skin, all ships consist of a box with various attribute slots that you fill with weapons, shields, consoles etc.
All you're asking for is another box - BFD.
Heck, nobody ever got tired of looking at a Galaxy-class in TNG for SEVEN YEARS - ask yourself, what is a better use for a design team: designing a box and balancing it for a subset of the playerbase, otr working on THINGS TO DO in the game that can be done my a majority of the playerbase (such as the weeklies)?
If your answer is another box - methinks you'd better check your priorities.
Sigh.
And the ship artists are gonna go start coding, writing and designing stories?
The answer is: No, they aren't. Ship artists make ships. Its why they are paid. Plenty of us enjoy seeing new ships. Its also a revenue stream for Cryptic.
Also, no need to get sanctimonious and tell people to get their priorities straight, Its a game, people enjoy it in their own way.
Anyway, Perpetual didn't make those, they hired John Eaves to make most of those. I am guessing they decided not to use them because they would owe Eaves royalties if they used them.
Besides, they aren't that great. I may not like all of the Cryptic designs, but they're better than most of those old "Perpetual" ships. Holes in pylons are odd. Holes in Saucers are... silly.
