What happened to the talk about getting rid of the current ESD and replacing it? Did this get nixed?
I like the outerdesign..but the inner layout is just not helpful when it comes to finding new NPCS. Anyone know if they still intend on destroying ESD ?
i know the outer was getting changed. i was just voicing that i actually like it. but i think thats just stupid to change the outside but not the inside. i think people dislike the inside more then the outside.
Im still okay with that. I really cant wait for the new ESD. If its a one time even I will be on my klingon torpedoing ESD into dust! And if its a week long event well I guess I will be playing my klingon all week .
Now dont get me wrong the current ESD is not a bad looking space station I just dont think its a good ST space station.
I personally didn't really hate old ESD, but I think that a futuristic version of the ST:III ESD would be much better. I would also love to be able to enter into the mushroom part of ESD and have to either manually dock, or click to do an animation like the captain's chair.
Yes ESD should be scrapped. It would be a fun event for it's destruction and it could be really good to get the community together. I also think that it would be cool to get a shiny new ESD.
The inside of ESD is fine. Good, logical circular setup with a path in between and in the middle.
Still, there are details that need worked out, such as the center of ESD evolving into a clusterfrak of respecs, emblems, and badges and so on. Maybe add a downstairs to Requisitions like the Shipyard's upstairs has their badge vendors and such.

I'm not going to lie...if ESD is going to be revamped I'm 100% for a huge RP event.

I agree with this. If we get the classic ESD.....please Cryptic give us a 25th century feel with it, like the current ESD.
I have tried three times now to capture the load screen that shows the New ESD plans. Unfortunately, I load way too fast and am not fast enough on the fingers. Anyone able to actually capture that screen shot or any other pre-views of the upcoming ESD?
P.S. To the poster above me, there is a screen shot of the new ESD, looks absolutely fantastic, you just have to be fast enough to see it when the load screen shows it. I have not been able to get a good look at it, because of my load times, only glances, I would like to actually get a good look at the design.
Honestly I hope we dont get an updated version of the Classic ESD....
To me ESD is the pinnacle of StarFleet technology. Its supposed to symbolize the devotion and courage of StarFleet to UFP. It should be the most advanced StarBase in all of UFP and not just some older out of date starbase thats just had a bunch of addons and updates done.
While StarFleet has had to reinstate older ships on a number of occassions to fight wars it wasnt prepared for. ESD is supposed to be a place for Diplomacy/Scientific Advancement/Exploration/Last Stand Defense. It stands out to anyone who visits Sol, and should put a lasting impression on them. To me a 70+ old Starbase with some additions is not going to give the same impression.
Imagine if you visited a Military Base in the States to find that the HeadQuarters for the Army Division was a large log cabin built a long time ago. Would you really feel safe or even impressed by the Armies abilities? I know I wouldnt.
What if you went to a Science Labotory studying disease and cancer and found them using equipment from the 1920s? Would you feel safe in any finds they made? I know I wouldnt.
Same thing with ESD, it needs to be from 2409, not Kirks time or Picards....they are no longer with us...neither should their obsolete technology.
One has to consider the cost of construction of the original ESD. Even if the society doesn't use "money" the amount of resources, man power, and time needed to undertake construction of something that size is off the charts. Even in the 23rd century, when it was built, it had to have taken years. I would assume it was designed and built to be used for at least a few centuries. The interiors will be reworked and retrofitted, I'm sure it was designed with this in mind, but the frame and hull would be far too costly to replace casually. The station does nothing but gently orbit, so minimul structural strain on the load bearing skeleton. There is no reason she could not function for a few centuries. Look at the White House. Its 200 years old and still in use. Same with Buckingham palace. The Empire State Building is over 70 and still popular.
When we consider the state of the Federation at the end of Nemesis (having come off of conflicts with the Borg and the Dominion) and then see the path to 2409 (where we went to war with pretty much everyone) it's very unlikely that the UFP could have gathered enough manpower, money, or resorces to contruct a new ESD.
I think, if it is to be destroyed, it should be nuked by angry civilians fed up with government wasteful spending and endless wars. Admiral Quinn is putting 18 year old Ensigns in command of 200 year old starships because Starfleet is broke and desperate, but ooooo look at their shiny new space station.
so do people still feel that ESD should get scrapped? and if so, how should Cryptic handle it?
Yes it should be scrapped. And i'm sure there are plenty of Klingons that would love to do the scrapping. And might feel cheated if it just magically changes form one day. I think it would be cool to allow klingons to attack it (and Feds to defend), then once its destroyed, leave starbase wreckage there for a few days, or a week. Then have the new one appear. As for all the amenities that ESD provides, i'm sure most of it can be found at other social areas. So we could do without ESD for a few days.

Practical concern:
What happens to new players completing the tutorial for that week?
Realiastically, I think it would be best handled as part of a weekly series or just before a season patch and then bump the timeline forward six months after the patch or during the series.
Maybe even have it so that you zone into a sector and it says, "Six months later..." in giant mission text.

This is why I'm a fan of the current: Because it's obviously from the 25th century loaded with the most advanced technology...but Cryptic follows the crying players who are self-centered wanting what *they want* .
So that's why it's being changed....b/c some people are crying adn Cryptic doesn't have the guts to state the obvious that this IS a new era......and with this era comes new technology....
While we do have "plans" for Earth Space Dock, they're far from being finalized.
We'll make sure to keep you all in the loop regarding when this might happen.
Thanks,
Stormshade
I was using Demorecord and when playing it back, I explored unknown sections of spacedock. Looks like a three way Transporter Room in the "plans" and also looks like some type of Quarters. Was hard to make out what kind of Quarters, but there was something there.

As well also, even if it is something of new technology, you must admit there are areas that need to be worked on. I would like to see an area where ships come in, and I can see them being worked on, or loaded/unloaded, ad such...just for starters...Most people feel comfortable with the old model of ESD since it is what they know...
Speaking of models of ESD...did they even show ESD in TNG, VOY, or DS9? I have no recollection of that...If they didn't, they could be well-justified in using the old model with updated internal workings....Call it a remodel...If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But then again, what do I know...It's my 2 cents..

I actually stated in another thread that id like to see the internal portion of the ship expanded to multiple levels with science and medical decks, engineering decks, security decks, civilian decks with a tailor shop and OPS decks. Im okay with the current layout. but i would love to see the insides be fleshed out more and less packed in.
I dont remember seeing it in any of those three series. I do remember seeing a SB that was pretty much the same design (probably ESD from the Films reused) in TNG. I cant remember if it was more then once or not. But either way, the ESD we knew of from the Films is well over 100 years old now.

Those were actually part of the original floorplan. They got scrapped during development.

Stomshade,
Will you please pass it along to give ESD Chief Medical Officer his own room or sickbay I hate that he stands out in a hall selling heals like a watch peddler.

You mean the creepy guy who keeps asking me if, I want a physical exam?

FYI It's the outer design that's being replaced, IIRC, the interior wasn't going to be changing until later

In all honesty, in my opinion, the current ESD shows that time has passed and that we are in the 25th century.

You aren't; betwwen now and Season 4

I still can see the line "short after S3"... well, not surprising at all.
