Make SOL System its own sector?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Many people have mentioned wanting the SOL system fleshed out with all its planets. While not necessarily a priority for me, I was thinking about it and realized, why not just make the SOL system its own sector? "Sector 001" to be precise. Getting into Sector 001 would work like Sector Blocks. When you approach the sector in Sector Space, you get a Traffic Controller pop-up (the one place where it makes sense) and you're then loaded into a new Sector Block made to look like the SOL system. All the planets could be there, the asteroid belt, Utopia Planitia (in orbit of Mars), a Mars Defense patrol (like in Best of Both Worlds), ESD, the ort cloud, etc. Each solar system feature would be a new map. (Ie: you'd have a Mars map, an ESD/Earth map, a Jupiter map, etc.)

If STO ever goes open PVP, this would be a neat thing to have because of that as well.

It's just a thought I wanted to share.

Honestly this should be one of the lowest priorities of all the things the devs need to be spending time on. Most of the content they'd add to the Sol system people would go to once or twice and then ignore it and the time spent on it would have been a waste. Kind of thing that should be added in a few years once the game is 99% bug free and there is plenty of content for multiple new races.

Unless they turn it into the central hub of feddie content, and add bunches and bunches of weeklies, and little tidbit places where you can find stuff, if you look for long enough...

    Here's how it works.

The line running along the right edge of Sirius is the dividing line between the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. the Sol system actually sits on the OTHER side of the line from Sirius, in Sector 001. Its just that the sector (and most of that area of the Alpha Quadrant) aren't shown in game.

So, even if they added Sector 001, Sol would still be in the upper Left corner of that sector block, much as it shows up in the upper Right corner of Sirius (but actually "across" the border.

Keep in mind the scale in a sector is MUCH larger than a single star system. Moving between systems takes hours at high warp. Moving between planets in a system takes minutes at high impulse, so you can't display Sol as a "sector"

Most literature I have seen have a sector block as 20 LY across. Don't know if that is hard canon, but most of the reputable tech manuals and star charts have that number established.

Based on what I've seen Devs talking about: visiting all the planets, various sol bases, etc, Sol is probably going to be a huge instance with a lot of potential sub-instances when it finally gets incorporated into the game. So from that standpoint it gong to be very-much like its own Sector.

Who cares about the solar system really ?

Star Trek is about space explorers who seek out new life, new civilizations and not space german tourists who spend their time in the damn solar system asking for the local beer in their crazy space german shorts.

If you really want useless stuff at least ask for funny things, i want the bynar as a playable specie and i want it yesterday !!

Based on that philosophy you can remove every system in the game except for the Exploration clusters. :)

Their social areas just like Wolf 359, Vulcan, Andoria, Risa, etc. They're places that can eventually have Cryptic missions added to them and can server as launching points for Foundry missions.

Well there was that future in Enterprise where the Klingons were part of the Federation. It's just inevitable.

Good lord, more load screens? That's the last thing this game needs.

I would rather see Sol being enlarged to the point that we can travel and actually go to Jupiter and beyond. Allow us to have the same Warp Speed the Devs used in that last Devidian mission, and let us zoom around in Sol to explore. But yeah, reaching at straws there, I know.

Actually you're close, but not quite there, the Alpha/Beta border is actually the border between Sirius SB and Delta Volanis, most of the current STO galaxy is in the beta quadrent, except those sectors west of Sirius SB. Ofcourse Sol is still on the dividing line though. However, sol is also right on the northern edge of sector 001, which is in-fact a sub-sector of the Vulcan sector, so it doesn't really make sense to put it in it's own sector.

Not to mention Utopia Planitia is in orbit of Mars. I'd be happy with them just adding that. (There's really nothing else to do in the SOL system.)
