So yesterday dstahl posts this in another thread. If you click on the link you'll note that the winner is to be announced on April 1st.
All of the angst and trolling and flaming that we've seen on the forums over the last two weeks over this contest and now it turns out that it's nothing more than an April Fool's Joke.
Great work Cryptic! That's the best April Fool's Joke I've ever seen!
Well the current submissions are certainly a joke.
I also voted half of them "offensive." Voting 1 didn't seem strong enough a statement.
Voting offensive is like reporting someone for making a Porno ship not because you dislike the ship design. All you're going to get from multiple uses of Offensive is your IP banned from the Intel website.

"Offensive" isn't restricted to nudity you puritan, and half of those MS paint doodles should reasonably offend any man.

Yeah, the winners would be announced on April 1st. Great timing.
A new Enterprise woot!, they going to roll this out before or after my away team quits falling into the ground , and i quit being ejected from my ship out into space when i use the turbolift?
Age isn't an issue, as if you fall under the age of 21 you just have someone 21+ submit your work.
What really sucks is this contest only being open to US residence, when many of us live outside of the US.
Sure, there are some who could do what I suggested above in order to still submit their work, but it's highly unlikely that the majority of Non-US players will be able to do so.

It's definitely not an April Fools joke. We may even be able to announce the winner at GDC.

Yeah, well I'll believe that when I see it.
But since you're here let me ask you a question. Since NOW would be a much better time to do a big advertising push for STO and even have a "Welcome Back Weekend", is there any chance that either of those two things will happen?

Non-US players?
there are people who Aint in the US?
srsly?
You must mean Canadians. They don't want to be bothered with a contest like this anyway. (It's hockey season)
If those in these alleged Non-US places are feeling mad about the obvious Unfairness in keeping this contest in the country whose laws the people having the contest HAVE to follow,( that would be the US) As opposed to those laws which they don't want to follow because they are either Insane or weirdly complicated, & possibly not even written in English (This would be everyone else,) should talk to their own Overlords about their laws.Cryptic can't do anything about them.
And about the April 1st thing,
Well played Cryptic, well played

Yep...this pretty much sums up the state of American education.:D
I wish they would have someone actually take a look at the entries before putting them up - there is a picture of the Enterprise-E taken right from startrek.com, 2 test patterns, Picard's head with nacells and a freaking red panda...
This is how they are choosing the next Enterprise? It just comes off as really sloppy

I Dunno, I think an entire squadron of Red Pandas invading Ker'Rat & the Arenas would be pretty epic myself.
Im going to vote for the Pandas.

* Sits down with a bowl of popcorn.
wow, It's been like 8 minutes since this contest started & It's already Fubar.
It should be an interesting couple of months.
I would be willing to bet that Cryptic NEVER, EVER does this kind of contest again.
Shame, because the Drama is almost as much fun as the game.:p

I'm really bothered right now by the way that it seems submissions are going in without review. One of my mods for ST:BC has already been submitted twice. I made that ship, I'm Canadian, and now, already, two people are trying to claim credit for my work. There really needs to be something more robust in place. Is there any way I can get those submissions pulled? I don't want someone else to be rewarded for my work. -DJ Curtis http://bridgecommander.filefront.com/file/Century_Class_USS_EnterpriseF;82748
I'd try sending a private message to one of the mods

Yep. I'm thinking there is a heck of a lot of plagiarism going on regarding this "contest" (who can rip off someone else's work without getting busted).
I dont really want to vote for any of them as it stands at the moment.
Half of them look like they took 3 minutes in MSPaint, the other half are random pictures of junk that has nothing to do with Star Trek, and the few that actually look pretty good and would get my vote, well, I cant tell if they are genuine or just stolen from someone else.
Something really needs to be done.
Cryptic, Intel, Atari, or whoever the hell is meant to be in control, please, do something!
Well, look on the bright side everyone! If your work is stolen and wins, not only can you take heart in the fact that your work is worthy of being the next enterprise, but also that cryptic/atari will have secured that person's real world address, which you can attain and send a court summons to.

dude DJ, I love that ship man, loved in BC and I would love it to death in STO... CRYPTIC this guy is awesome, give him a job.

I agree that there needs to be someone monitoring the submissions. And I really don't blame you for being angry at people using your name and submitting your design without permission. Even if it was done by an overzealous fan, it was still wrong.
Besides, I'm sure the process would've revealed the fake sooner or later because they couldn't collect the prize without legally identifying themselves as you.
When I saw the email about this "Design the Next Enterprise" thing I was stoked. I spent days designing a vessel in AutoCAD and creating hand sketches. Then this contest actually gets started and it's kind of ridiculous.
First, the Enterprise is a huge iconic vessel, so to have it only open to US residents is absurd. I understand the legal implications, but seriously, any true fan would be thrilled just to have their work raised to that level and wouldn't care if there was any prize money, or objects. Just the honor of getting to be the designer of the Enterprise is enough. (By the way, I'm from Illinois)
Second, while my hand drawn ship (my CAD model isn't done) is pitiful next to the beautifully rendered vessels such as the pirated Century-class (which DJCurtis, I'm sorry for what has happened to you. Honestly, if I could pick any ship to be the winner I'd select yours because it's just fantastic.), there is no system at all in place here. What I mean is, there should be some kind of categories like computer generated, hand drawn, and misc or something. I mean, seriously, there are numerous pictures that have nothing to do with ship design. Can't we stuff them into another category and let the real designs be seen instead of having to scroll past pictures of people, Spiderman and that Picard-head-ship-thing?
Third, as it pertains to DJCurtis and others that have been robbed of their material, why is there no security involved here? I mean, come on, is it that hard to Google search? How about a simple questionair? "What program did you use to create this design?"; "Give some basic specifications for your design." That alone would confuse and discourage a few. They should, at the very least, remove the duplicates and current designs that are painfully obvious (like the two submissions of the Aventine, and the Sovereigns, etc.).
Finally, why is there no forum section on the submission page? This is the starship Enterprise we are talking about. I want to be able to post and say "this is a great design". If nothing else, a place where all legitimate designs can be discussed so that when STO gets to doctor the design and create a model they don't run off in some direction that the fans won't like. (I have faith in you guys, almost all the designs in game have been great, but if this is going to be a contest for the people, we should dictate the final draft as best as possible.)
Part of me actually hopes this is an April Fool's joke. I've dreamed of designing a ship for Star Trek since I was 7 years old but I just don't like the way things are going here. I just hope this all makes more sense and is better dealt with soon...

It cheeses me off when I see people submit your designs and Perpetual concept art and even unmodified Cryptic concept art.
I think this contest needs some robust moderation and a part of that is for the mods to learn to spot Bridge Commander screenshots and existing game art owned by Cryptic (including the Perpetual art) and knock it out of the running.
Or even just have a "report infringement" button where we can supply a link showing that the image has already been published online.
