Issue AFTER season 3 update with graphics

After the season 3 patch, I noticed that the graphics of STO are now low-res looking and very un-crisp. The resolution is set at 16x10 and the character/world details are at 100%. Anyone else having this issue? My graphics card is an Nvidia GForce 9100. Also, everything was just fine before the patch. Thanks!

You may have tried this already, but... you might want to go into the options and reset everything to the defaults, apply it, and then modify it back how you want it set according to your preferences. It might help, not certain.

They've definitely optimised the graphics a bit. I have a much smoother framerate now than before season 3 went live, and I noticed the same thing on Tribble during testing. Same settings on both servers, but the season 3 version ran smoother, meaning you should now be able to get away with higher settings than before.

I have tried that... Re-setting everything to defaults, then bumping the res back up to 16x10. I still looks worse that it did before season 3.

Yes, I have noticed the smoother frame rate - no doubt about that. I was thinking the same thing. I tried putting the character/world detail at 200%. It doesn't look a whole lot better IMO. Do you all feel that a fresh install would solve the issue? I would like to think that Cryptic wouldn't sacrifice quallity for frame rate. Thoughts?

I don't think of it so much as sacrificing quality as doing what should have been done beforelaunch anyway. If you look at a game like Assassin's Creed 2, which has an incredible degree of realism, and it runs smooth as a baby's backside on a fairly average machine, I find it odd that STO has slightly worse graphics, yet doesn't run as smooth.

They seem to have fixed that with S3. Try re-verifying all your files. (Load the launcher, click options at the top and check the "Force Verify" box). It takes a while but might fix the problem you're having. I certainly wouldn't say my graphics have gotten noticeably "worse", just more refined.

Having said that, I did notice earlier that the saucer section on the Nebula class seems to have a lower poly count. So it is noticeably worse in that regard, but only if you're looking quite close. But again, that kind of thing should be taken into account and done pre-launch, so people don't then see the graphics getting dumbed down post-launch.

Thanks for the advice... After 'force verifying' and updating my graphics card drivers, nothing has changed. It's strange how on Tribble everything looks just as it did - which was fine. And on Holodeck, everything is sub-par graphically (except for the UI, which is still good - minus stopping at the number 8 for slotting skills).

From what you describe in the OP, it sounds like somehow the 'Half-Resolution' options is turned on...I'd suggest to double check that option :)

if you look Assassin's Creed 2 graphic then you must know that online games needs way more proc power then standard games.so AC2 requirements are ok for single player but that graphic would not hold in online gaming if you make AC2 mmo.so STO is very good.If you look WoW,he is draging his TRIBBLE for 6 years on very old engine.Sto needs dx10 support to unload graphic power and made it even better.

dx10/10.1 was only needed on vista machines (old use now as most are runnin 7 now) so they have went past that and are working on tuning support for dx11 with the current generation of cards that are out.

I've also noticed some graphical issues when playing the game. Mostly on the characters. When running around, the folds on the Enterprise uniforms are gone, and the ridges on the Klingon characters look more like someone tried to paint a fold onto the character's head instead of actual ridges. On Tribble everything still looks like it use to, if not better. The ridges look like they do in series, like there's mountains popping out of the character's head, and the Enterprise uniforms have folds. Force verifying didn't work, nor did changing video settings. I know it's not an issue of half-resolution as I have that turned on for both Tribble and Holo and it doesn't change the characters at all when it's turned off.
