I actually like the idea of commanding a small fleet of pets. I think it would be cool if were able to promote our Boffs to captain to take command of the other ships. Even if it works mostly the same as the Photonic Fleet power. Maybe just add a fire on my mark command, and some kind of formation command.
As far as all the admirals running around, I look at it this way. STO is about me. I'm the one who fought the Borg on the Khitomer and Vega colony. I'm the one that Admiral Quinn noticed. I'm the ONLY one this happened to in my mind, when I'm playing. I'm the one that is more awesome than everyone else, and I'm shooting through the ranks because of my extreme awesomeness. Nobody else. In fact, I'm so freakin' awesome that Starfleet can't afford to put me behind a desk. I understand that in reality every RL player went through this, but in my imagination it's just my toon. This makes way more sense to me than having 100,000 admirals running around.
EXACTLY!!!!! some people are so hung up with wanting the game to be a simulation that they don't realize that everyone they see is the hero in the story, not just themselves, every other Admiral has saved the Federation just like they have and every LT will save it in his/her time because they are the hero too. -- I know it's running off topic but I wasjust so glad to see someone else who gets that.:D:D
This could be awesome. You could promote your BOFF's to command the other ships you have in your hanger and take them on missions with you. This could also tie into the request some have made, to updgrade lower tier ships to higher tiers for your BOFF's to command. The possibilities are endless. They could also take a page from Assassins Creed Brotherhood, where you send them on missions to gain XP, and use that to upgrade them and Their ships. I like this idea a lot.
Some of us don't think space pets would be awesome.
I would rather forgo having an admiral rank at all. For the most part, you'd think admirals wouldn't be flying around the galaxy, but administrating from a SB.
if you want to pretend you leading a fleet it could be fun

Well if it's an option you *choose* then why not? I'm not a fan for FORCED anything either because in my opinion a true MMO gives CHOICES to it's players, it doesn't impede requirements of how to play the character save for the class restrictions.
I for one love the idea of having my own "fleet" to command since the game bombed me up to Vice Admiral anyway. Kinda like Starfleet Command. But yes, I do support people from both sides and it should be an option not a requirement.
I would wait and see how it plays out. On the Galaxy Refit, The Saucer speration is hardly any advantage, its one additional beam array. I only use it because my ship can stand to lose a few tons and gives me a fairly nice turn rating. I would like to think this is how the "fleet ships" would be, 1 extra attack with no real overall impact on fighting.
I love this idea, and like some of the other posters have said, being able to promote your boffs to take command of the other ships in your roster would be awesome. I think it could alot to the game.
This could go one of two ways: either really well or really poorly.
I think having NPC ships that merely follow you around would be quite lackluster. That'd be "more of the same" gameplay.
If, however, you can send these ships out on assignments (i.e. build reputation with this faction, gather resources/analyze this nebula, etc.) that might be more interesting. Imagine being able to assign orders to your subordinates and then focusing on wahtever missions you wish to undertake with status reports as they repeat assignments.
Of course, there would need to be gameplay to justify when you send them out on patrols - like gathering resources for a colony or space station or building a new ship.
I'm all for the idea of space pets! Think of all the epic 1v1 PvP battles! BoP Squad here I come!!!!! I pity the poor Feddy that has a run-in with a Sci. carrier captain with a personal armada and Photonic Fleet!
This could solve the solo issue people have with doing the Task Force missions.
I would like to bring up something I saw in the "Ask Cryptic"
Q: Direphoenix: Is there any chance we can separate Rank from Skill Level and add in a(n optional) larger-scope "Admiral/General Game" for those that want to be Admirals or Generals?
A: We have discussed and have plans to make Fleet Admiral (level 61) add a special type of gameplay where you can begin to build away teams in space (i.e. other ships that you command). No firm details yet, but we do want to make Fleet Admiral offer new types of gameplay.
I don't like the idea of pets on space at all. I can live with it on the ground portion of the game, but in space is too much.
Half of the missions on the ground can be completed w/o a single BO, and yet they're required.
A fairly good chunk of the space missions require no other ship.
To be blunt, some of us hate pets. I can understand a class where it's strength may be pets (carriers anyone?) , but making all of us have pets when we reach a higher rank is ridiculous.
So, if you, like me, hate pets, and just suffer w/ the BO's because it makes sense for the most part, then please sign this to let the dev's know that this mechanic shouldn't be forced on all of us.

I'm a Vice Admiral. I want a fleet of at least two ships alongside my flagship. I cannot in good conscience support any proposal that would remove this future function from the game.
I am curious, however. Why the pet hatred? Is it the crappy AI? Or do you just prefer to play "lone gunman"? I just can't grasp why anyone bearing an Admiral's rank wouldn't want a fleet of their own.

Five would be nice, but I'd hate to see the affect a bunch of people with four ships following them around would have in things like Fleet Actions on people with lower-end rigs. The player ship and two fleet ships would be the optimal balance, I think.
What I'd love to see is how they work. I'd love to post a BOff in each one, maybe make it so each ship can use any of the four abilities the BOff has available. Custom-outfitting each ship would be awesome, too.
How would they balance it, though? Would they spawn more enemy ships like what happens when you have a normal team, or will the ships just be more powerful? Would the Captain BOffs be limited to ships of their tier, or could they use any ship I happen to have?
And what happens if a fleetmate is destroyed? Do they float disabled until repaired by you or your other fleet ship? Do they respawn and have to fly all the way back to you?
Will I be able to utilize their powers from my flagship? Or better yet, be able to switch between them on-the-fly like Dragon Age: Origins?
Will we have anything like Darren suggested; sending the ships to patrol systems, gather resources, explore nebulas, instead of having them follow us everywhere?
Good point! The way I see it, it should be set like it is now with ground PvE. If you beam down with someone else you can only bring 1 or 2 BOs each. Maybe in certain battles you can bring a full fleet with other players bringing theirs.
I would rather forgo having an admiral rank at all. For the most part, you'd think admirals wouldn't be flying around the galaxy, but administrating from a SB.
i also agree with this statement....if you don't want to have fleets don't have admirals.
i would be happy either way, either give us admirals with fleets or make all of us admirals captains instead.

I would really like to be able to freely select which ship and how many I would bring on a mission with my Flag Ship similar to reducing BO crowding on the Dividian mission Everything Old is New Again.
Having the choice of from lets say 1-5 ships in your own "Task Force" would be a huge draw for me, there are missions where I could see having several ships would be beneficial, but for the vast majority I would rather only take 1-2 along with me.
That being said IF this comes into play and IF they allow you to call "your own" ships to your aid, they would first need to take off the cap on particular ship types. (Having wild visions of my fleet escort being flanked by twin akiras also being flanked by twin sabres :D:cool:)

I don't want to be an admiral, nor command a fleet. I hate pets because they take away from my personal feeling of control over my toon. My single toon is what I want, I don't want pets. Just my captain, and my ship.
Now if you want that, go for it. I don't. Give me a ship that gets rid of the option of a fleet. Like a battleship. I don't want to have to have a fleet to get things done. The AI tends to suck, no matter what the AI is, it sucks. If it behaves anything like how BO's behave, they can't even follow a "go here" command. If cryptic can't get it right on a BO, then I'm not gonna hold my breath on a ship.
I concede, in this thread I seem to be the lone voice, but at least the dev's know some of us don't support the idea, and can adjust accordingly. Before any major things get in the way. Far easier to make it this way from the ground up, rather than as an afterthought.
Also, I like to be the hero, not the team member I'm sure others can understand the sentiment.

Its simple: as long as they dont make this some sort or requirement to complete a mission, then if you dont like they idea, dont use them. Its called free will, so dont feel like you have to campaign against an idea you dont like if its optional.
but remember this is most likely going to be a new type of gameplay. there is no evidence that you either
1) have to use pets, or that it will be forced on you in anyway
2) would even be usable in the normal game.
this fleet admiral thing might be limited to a sector devoted to open pvp or a new type of mission or anything. we simply dont know. its pointless complaining about something when we have no idea how it will work yet. its like saying they should remove all crafting, pvp and STF because you dont like it. it will almost certainly be optional.
[X] I agree
This all sounds, without knowing the details, like a great idea of the Cryptonauts. I'm looking forward to this feature.
How can you be against something that was barely mentioned and that we have NO details on and isn't coming out for MONTHS if ever?
It wasn't barely mentioned. it's come up over and over since closed beta. Now a dev has publicly stated an intention to create such a system, at least in the "throwing ideas around stage" so I'm responding.
I'm not out to hassle Dan, or tell the devs what to do. I want them to know some of us don't like the idea. Thats all.
There is obviously a high demand for such a system. if they can do it, the dev's will create it. I just don't want to be forced into using it.
I want my sovvy, and thats it.
A fair compromise would be to allow a squad system when you get points and you can fill those points with ships of varying values. So you get 1 T5, or a few T4's and a few more T3's and so on. A whole fleet of NX's would be possible. Also, boost the T5's in firepower so they can stand against an equal force that the fleet of lower tiers can. A few more weapons, more shields, hull, and the like.
Then they'd have to remove the limitation on how many of a specific ship we can have.
Its simple: as long as they dont make this some sort or requirement to complete a mission, then if you dont like they idea, dont use them. Its called free will, so dont feel like you have to campaign against an idea you dont like if its optional.
The issue is whether or not it will be optional. If not, then this is a valid concern. But the mechanic is so far away that we probably couldn't even get a definite yes or no on something even that simple about it.
On the other hand, the fact this is issue is being raised so early could very well alert the devs to the fact not everyone wants a team of ultimate bad***es. Some people just want to be the ultimate bad***. With this concern voiced, hopefully they will listen and decide to try to make it optional.

LOL, say... do you think you're awesome? Just wanted to be clear on that..
I think having an "away team" would be really cool and open up some interesting options for space missions.
However, the last thing PVP needs is more garbage flying around.
I'd say sure for missions but not in PVP. Or at least not in PVP until after I have finished the PVP accolades at which point I won't care either way.

Personally speaking, I still believe that any rank beyond captain should be fleet officer rank only.
I also think pet fleets should require the trade of a promoted BO first officer to further make the system more important to the players.
This was also discussed here: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=189736
