actually, being parked next to an Akira in the NX last night, i have to say they really really do look similar..

I know that both ships are as they appeared in canon, or as close as can be in-game, but really.. what were the designers of the NX for the show thinking?!

and its just the direction of the "pylons" thats inverted really..

The story goes that the producers for enterprise wanted to use an Akira class as they appeared in first contact and DS9 for the NX-01. The art department at the time managed to at least convince them to let them retrofy the design to make it fit the era.

At the very least thats the story as I remember reading it. Was on either John Eaves or Doug Drexlers blog that I saw it if memory serves.

You've got it. Read up on Doug Drexler's blog and you'll see the whole story.

So keep that in mind when designing the new Enterprise. If CBS if helping judge the thing, you may have idiots who think the Akira makes a good first generation ship...

To be fair, if the Akira is good in all times, then I have one piece of advice.....

    "You must construct additional pylons!"

What are you guys all talking about? They look nothing alike! I'm not sure what you're seeing that you can say they appear similar. That's like saying the Nenebek, Time-pod, and Yridian shuttle all look the same! :)

I have a very hard time believing that story. I mean, they wanted to use a SIMILAR design to the Akira? Sure. But I doubt CBS would even APPROVE of them using the EXACT SAME ship.

How about the story from the mouth of one of the persons who designed the NX class ship: Doug Drexler. Read it for yourself on the following blog post.

    http://drexfiles.wordpress.com/2009/06/12/alex-jaeger-week-the-akira-class/

From the above blog entry at the DrexFiles blog.
I was going to do a side by side of the Akira and the NX-01, but Alex sent me so much great stuff on his ship that we will concentrate on it, and get back to a side by side at a later date. As everyone knows, the NX was based on the Akira, in fact the Enterprise producers had decided that they were going to use the Akira as is for the NX Enterprise! Herman Zimerman, the Enterprise production designer talked them in to letting us come up with a version that was across between the TOS ship, and the Akira class.

    (Note: highlighting is mine)

Actually, I used the Akira as a 'refit NX' ship on one of my RP characters.

Some of you need Glasses if you cannot see the Akira in the NX-Enterprise

As soon as I saw that ship on ENT. I knew she was based on the Akira Class.... the Akira is one of the Best Designs out there and I wasnt surprised to see the Creators of the show design the Big E around the Akira

Its just proof that Berman and Braga (or however you spell his name) had no idea what they were doing.
