CRYPTIC proposed us:
- The Constitution TOS starship class as Cruiser in the Tier 1
- The NX starship class as Escort in the Tier 1
Why not propose:
- The Oberth starship class as Science Shp in the Tier 1
I play Science with my main toon and when I heard the Oberth was on the Radar my first commet 'Oh god, the Reshirt Crusier', because let's face it. Almost all the Oberth's ever seen on screen were blown up, phased into asteriod walls, or infected by some alien plague.
I like the ship design and support its introduction into the game, if only to make the "holy trinity" of Constitution, Miranda and Oberth complete.* As a starter ship, it'd also make a nice predecessor to the Nova.
*: I'd actually be in favor of moving the Refit-Connie to the starter ships and turn the Miranda into another escort. This would have the added benefit of making the Excalibur-class actually seem more advanced than its predecessor. The Centaur-class could then be used elsewhere.
If they add this ship being a C-Store item would make a bad move. I think they can be nice enough to just toss it in with the bells and whistles of the next be update down the road.
You think so? I always thought, the fact that it's such a totally different design, makes it cool. I'd love to switch from Inteprid to Oberth with my Vulcan sci officer

eww I would never switch from my intrepid to go to an oberth
i wouldnt mind seeing it in the game aswell, just thinking it prob wont be quite usefull, its a small science ship ... so yea, tier 1 maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe tier 2 ...
I love the idea of adding new ships to the lower levels, such as the Oberth for SCI officers at Lt or Lt Cmdr levels. What I dont understand though is when they would get used. WIth players moving quickly through the ranks most folks dont stay at Lt or Lt Cmdr all that long. Is there some plan to make it necessary to fly a lower tonnage ship?
An interesting thought would be a Fleet Level engagement where a total tonnage of ship was allowed. For example:
2 @ Tier 6
4 @ tier 5
6 @ tier 4
8 @ tier 3
10 @ tier 2
That might make it interesting to decide who gets to bring in the battleships/carriers and who needs to bring in the escorts and such. I doubt the factions would ever deploy fleets of only the biggest ships they own.
I'd like to see squadrons of t2, t3 and t4 escorts and support ships supporting a fleet with a few dreadnoughts and battleships. As a VA on several toons this would be an interesting challenge to me to decide which ship I fly and how I config my BO's and weapon load-out to support the "fleet's" needs.
Just a thought...from an old man, whith too much time on my hands.
I would be perfectly ok with an Oberth being available as a first(starter) tier science vessel. Just as long as it doesn't get a special ability like, 'Kill the crew, randomly klingons will strand your crew on a unstable world, or catastrophic hull failure' or something like that.

Definitively. Might be a cool idea for a new kind of PvE Fleet Action and it would probably look really great, just as in the shows.
PvP would be interesting as well, but that'd result in too much frustration for some of the lower-level players I suppose.
The only trouble with all of these tier 1 ships is that most of us are at T5 already. I've already rolled 2 fed alts and would hate to roll another just to play with ships I had to buy.

Enh, I've rolled two other officers, just to play with ships and try out different progress branches. It's not that big of a deal, and well worth it.
Honestly, though, you don't need to roll alts just to play with the ships. You can get one and just load it up with whatever level gear you're using. Obviously, that'd be a little impractical if you planned on engaging in certain aspects of gameplay (like taking it into PvP at VA level), but if you just wanna try the ship....
I also pose the fact that we have episode replay coming. Considering this allows you only to take a mission at its original level, this would be a grand time to play around with an Oberth by trying your hand at the early missions in it.
And they could give it a decent 360 degree mount phaser similar to the runabout. I don't know, you could make the oberth worth while for a tier 1 character.

I hadn't considered that aspect. Go back to your older ships with the newer gear. You'd still take them out pretty fast, but bump the difficulty to Elite...
I'm all in favor of the Oberth being in the game period, and it would make the most sense to make it a Science variation of the starter ships. We've got the Connie as a Cruiser-light and the NX-Class as an Escort-light. Why not round it out with this classic design? Besides, I kinda like the look of it.

Word. That's why we need a Tier 1 and Tier 5. My sciene officer is a vice admiral. I'm not going to buy additional character slots on the c-store so I can create another science officer only to fly this ship when I'm lieutenant. I'm ready to switch to Oberth if they make it Tier 5. I've got an all TWOK-uniformed crew so that'll look nice

Well apart from personal use, if Cyptic bothered to make this ship they could then add it in missions etc in the future, which would also be cool. To the rescue of a science ship. Like the one with Lt barcley and his Transporter Fear in TNG.

All but a couple were not destroyed or other wise.
So yeah Bob, they'd loose money making that a C-Store item.

I'd like this, but not for the C-Store.:)
Yeah but what do they do with the Miranda then? Just curious.

I would just to laugh at responses like this when they see me in game

I think putting the Oberth as a Tier 1 (or Tier 0) Science Vessel makes sense.
