"New" Sector Space feedback and question incl. Galaxy Map

Since beta i was one of those who was against the present sector space and i must say that after seeing a couple of tribble vids on the new design it really impressed me.

Really looks more like space and "Star Trek" with the star treaks. I really like it.

There's just one more stuff regarding sector space that i wish would vanish -> loading screens between sectors. Will we such improvement at some point? less box style? less permissions to load a new sector?

I would also suggest in revamping the Galaxy Map to a better presentational view..to look more like a galaxy map/view

what i have in mind would be something like this http://booredatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Star_trek_map2.jpg

That's what i call a clear representation of a Galaxy Map and clear view of Borders. In an instant you see who is where, where borders are (Neutral Zone), and what systems are inside your or other territory.

Example: If loading would be limited in going from Federation to Klingon Space this design would be perfect.

Any word if something like this can be seen in the future?

The only thing i know is that they plan on making the "boxes" larger, maybe merge a few. apart from that ....

A good alternative to trafic controllers if they are still in the game after season 3 (dident see em on the vids) would maybe just be a small timer in the middle of yer screen with one of your officers going "warping into [insert sector block name here] in 10 .. 9 .. etc ... and a small cancel box under it for when you graze a border by accident.

I personally perfer the current map over yours because its more clear where everything is when you are looking for something. + because the game is in boxes, having the map in boxes = clearer. (IMO)

That's why i wrote that if they change sector space from box style to a 1 faction big box, the galaxy map i presented would be a nice way to go. If they stay with such a sector box design like it is, such a galaxy map wouldn't prove usefull. ;)

its probably never going to be one big map you know. :S all you can hope for is that the boxes will be larger, the merging of a few blocks. although one can feel free to hope :) maybe if STO becomes immencely populair in the future and they have the money for it. shrug!

part of the reason behind the "sector boxes" is technical, and while they're working on ways round that part of it, its not as if they can just "flip a switch" and create exceptionally large seamless areas.

i can confirm the traffic controllers are still in place in the revamped sector space on tribble, but they could be re-worked before or after season 3 hits as well.

I'm not a hater of the current sector space, i understand why it was chosen to be a more astrometric-graphics look than realistic visuals and never understood the almost rabid hatred some people had for it, that said i'm also impressed and happy with the revamp look, its a nice blend of realistic visuals and reduced size to allow for faster movement between areas (unless we want to take an actual day real time to warp from sol to risa in game?)

I also think the galaxy map could use an update, but should retain the sector blocks as they're often referenced in mission text, so navigation to the needed area should be as easy as possible! (i remember before the galaxy map went in back in beta and /zone was filled with people asking where each planet was.. )

i think an interactive, zoomable 3D galaxy map would be pretty cool too, maybe not as a replacement for the maps we have now, but inside the ship maybe?

The question you should ask yourself then, do you realy want the devs to be working on this kind of fluff, when there is no real need for it.

I admit i was a real hater for the old sector space. dont know if my explanation will help you any bit but ... it kind of broke my immersion into the game, sector space was to much NOT the way space feels/looks, eventhough i can understand why they went this way in the first place, it wasnt a good choice if you want people to delve deeper into the deep awesome mystery of space and exploration. Now, as a dev (stormshade i think?) once pointed out, its not a SPACE SIM, and tbh i dont want that either, like you said spend a day traveling to earth, but what they did to sector space could not have been more SPOT ON.

I was mearly adding my "2cents" in for the discussion on if they were to re-work the galaxy map. even if they in time remove the sector boxes, or the loading between them, i feel keeping some visual referance to the area's "name" would be required to aid in navigation.

the wish for a fully interactive 3D galaxy map is just something i'd like to see eventually.. i dont think the devs should be paying much attention to that at all at this point :)

"No need" is imho not the correct term. I would rather say "not the most important". In making STO even better and drawing more and more people into the game, every "good" suggestion that has a positive and desired effect is in some way needed. Even if it's a ton of fluff you have to add to the game to achieve it. It's just not top priority like fixing bugs or making the gameplay mechanics better :)
