Are the "Old Ones" the Iconians?

There are two TOS references to races called "The Old Ones", both references being made by the same writer.

http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Old_Ones_(Exo_III)

They were believed to be extinct by their android servants on Exo III. But if they're the same race, they survived outside the galaxy in some form, sending two Ornithoid servants to scout the Milky Way Galaxy i the 23rd century.

The two interesting bits of tech associated with them are the Android duplicator, allowing for android doubles to be made of any target, and the Transmuter, which warped thoughts to reality.

The conflict regarding their status as extinct and "extra-galactic" (and maybe "extra-dimensional") location would fit the Iconians well. Their androids were designed to function for half a million years indicating they would have been at least contemporaries of the Iconians as well.

I have a question, weren't the Iconians meant to be showing up in Season 3? I'm guessing they've been put off due to the nature of the update. So are they going to appear in weekly series 3 instead or something?

Also, if they do, it might be a good time to call in on Portal 63 again. I think we're gonna need him. :D

The Old Ones are references to the Great Old Ones of the Lovecraft mythos, which includes Cthulu and Shub-Niggurath. The extra-dimensional references to them fits perfectly. The technology reference on Exo III not as much, but that could be considered a reference to the (not Great) Old Ones, a more mortal-esque race that also went extinct at some point in the past, leaving behind various relics.

Have you seen the Iconian concept art for STO? I'd say they look a bit Lovecraftian.

I don't think they could fit the bill as the Iconians, but another ancient race long gone. Like the T'Kon or someone else.

While Cryptic is definitely making the Iconians the villians, I'm hoping that we could their rivals return as well to help the Federation. Perhaps the Tholians, which could give reason for them being (or appearing Xenophobic).

Unfortunately, that would be greatly paralleling the plot of Babylon 5. :(

Maybe but JMS has yet to impress me quite like that again... and based on his aversion to longform projects (he's quit several comics jobs) and push for fast projects (he wrote Ninja Assassin in one week, on the cheap as I understand it) and his avowed love of Trek...

... I bet you could call him up, say, "How do we NOT make this like Babylon 5? Want to write a weekly series?"

And he'd do it ahead of schedule and under budget and Atari would have a nice little press release about a weekly series guest authored by JMS.

There's one small piece on the right here, that shows one in its battle armor: http://www.stowiki.org/Iconian

That's a pretty wicked looking concept - hope they keep it for the final appearance.

-nod- the Iconians - as referenced by Q's latest appearance in the game - are supposed to be the 'demons of air and water' who masterminded this whole thing. From Species 8472 believing that the Alpha quadrant was out to get them (leading to them infiltrating the Klings and Feds) to the damage the Borg have currently been dealing with, to Donatra being 'borged' and so on...

can't WAIT to see what comes of it ^_^

I hope Cryptic keeps them very "mysterious" for a great while. The thought of them lingering around in the game and making "special appearances" and references to them from other beings is breathtaking.

Down the road, they should have more of the small confrontations with them, maybe even opening up a devastated sector that the "Iconions ravaged" that we can see. Remember when the Borg had destroyed and cut a chunk out of the planet that was a Federation Outpost along the Romulan Neutral zone? The Romulans appeared and said it happened to one of their outposts too? Leading to the Borg Cube invasion in Sector 001 (Earth). That was a heck of a cliffhanger episode in TNG.

That would be a nice plot to get the Iconions going. Maybe a multiple pronged effort BY the Federation, Klingon, and Romulans (when playable Romulans make it to STO).

An all out war leading to Season 6 or something along those lines. A weekly possibly over a period of a few months, scattered about during that time frame and not back to back like the Deferi & Devidians.

So much intrigue, I can't think about it anymore!!!!!

DARN!!!! Just thought about it again!!! :D

I agree, leave the Iconians in the background. Let them play puppet masters so they can continue their plans. And considering it's caused the entire war, I can imagine they're not here to take us out on a picnic and play with puppies.

Hmm, Stahl hinted at Spacedock getting blown to bits before Season 4. I wonder if they got a hand in this.
