Cryptic: Don't listen to people complaining about the Rings!

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
It's GOOD! It's NOT Superman 64. It's a breath of fresh air. Don't dumb down what is already SO SIMPLE. Don't make it easier. It's already stupidly easy. Don't pay heed to the people who can't go through the rings properly because they have such a little amount of skill you really shouldn't bring us all down that low.

We need more things like this... But make the tasks, harder. Yes, harder. More difficult.

Example: There's a mission where you must manually navigate through a dangerous area of space. The sensors reveal the safest route via rings. If you miss you take damage. Bigger ships could miss more often.

Seriously, don't feel the need to dumb things down to the lowest common denominator.

I liked the rings. They were easy once I used "LMB+RMB" for piloting. Great fun and opens up doors for racing.

    HOWEVER:
This mission is next to impossible for those players using a trackball

I did this first try with the keyboard. Ship was a Galaxy-class. Chill, this wasn't hard. I think most people could get it in a couple tries.

I have no idea but someone sent /tell saying that it was impossible and wondering if I had any secretsauce to help them.

Personally, I play on a weighted mouse at 3200 DPI. :D

Regardless of whether or not you disagree with them, telling Cryptic to ignore feedback from other people is essentially trolling.

I don't mean they should ignore it. I'm just trying to let them know there are plenty of people that can do this. Plus it's not a broken mechanic.

I've got a clumsy VA who always gets toasted in PvP, but with an Xbox 360 controller I nailed the rings in one go...

It is certainly not difficult to steer your ship by holding Mouse 1 + 2.

    Thank you for reading.

I thought the rings were a nice touch in regards to doing slingshot time travel.

I think most of the players who complained about it are upset when they have to do anything more than pressing the 'F' key....

Perhaps, but telling the Devs to ignore other people simply because you dont agree with them definitely is.

Starfox 64 would be more precise.

Mario Kart 64 has a similar ring mechanic, as well as some of the sonic's.

Wave Race 64 also. Really its a long list, so everyone should get off the Superman 64 reference.

No way. Superman 64 is borderline playable outside of the rings. There are a ton of other published games which are 100x worse. :p

    I'm not saying Superman 64 isn't bad. It's terrible. :D

people are having lots of trouble with this? Granted it took me like 3 tries to do it, but it's not that hard to be insurmountable

Maybe because they have RSI/Carpal Tunnel in their wrist from 20 years in the IT industry and can no longer use a mouse for medical reasons.

I loved mice, until my right hand became paralyzed.. Track balls allow me to, well, still use a computer.

    With a mouse and keyboard,
With a Fleet Escort At full speed on medium difficulty there's no problems with the rings.
with a Retro Excelsior At full impuls on Hard mode no difficulty too with the rings.
In fact, even at full speed, the rings are really easy to pass.

Medium or Hard mode, the only part a bit hot is the end of the mission where you must destroy the meteor.

Due to a medical condition I have significant eye hand coordination issues, plus RSI so yes for some people this mission is extremely difficult to the point of insurmountable...

I never called YOU a troll. However, if you feel that the behavior that I mentioned applies to you, then that is your own issue. But yes, telling the Devs to ignore the feedback of other players because you dont agree with them is in fact trolling.

Pointing out extreme and lowest common denominator opinions and advising ignoring them is not trolling.

My mom SUCKS at 3d video games. She's terrible. I tried to make her play this. She just can't navigate 3d space in a game and would run into a wall for minutes at a time. Should STO make the game easy enough so that even she could play? She's the lowest common denominator and extreme example of not having the skills to play the game?

It's not meant as an insult (it's my mom!). Facts should never be taken as insults, however sadly they often are. It's just an analogy. One that illustrates the point perfectly.

I got the facts and guess what. The lowest common denominator DOES exist. Taking offense to that is not logical or needed and there's no offense needed. And yes, I'm under the opinion that when you get to the extremes you should basically ignore them. That works for both sides from the people who want the game absurdly easy to the people who want to the game absurdly hard.

Again, if you take offense that's your problem. If you feel trolled that's your problem. There's no trolling here unless trolling is paying heed to logic. Calling everything you don't agree with trolling is trolling.

Sure, they could be nice enough to listen to those opinions. But seriously, they shouldn't take them seriously.

You never called me a troll. You just heavily hinted at it and basically flat out said I did it. Don't be ridiculous.

Here is what you apparently dont comprehend: explaining WHY you dont agree with someone else is fine; thats part of discussion. However, telling the Devs to simply ignore them is essentially trolling. Now, if you think the Devs are so ignorant that they cant judge for themselves what is a "reasonable" complaint and what isnt and actually need you to tell them what to ignore and what to listen to, then there isnt much hope for this game at all. Personally, I think they are intelligent enough to decide for themselves what to "listen" to without being told.

I comprehend that perfectly and I'm saying that it's not trolling. You are incorrect and false in your judgment.

I never said the Devs couldn't judge stuff. Now you're putting words in my mouth. I'm sharing my opinion in contrast to many others I've seen. This is a forum. You're supposed to start discussions and can even if it might not be needed.

I was able to do it in one pass, with the Retrofit Excelsior, I was even able to loop around and go through a ring I missed without failing.

i got it on the first try by (now get rdy...) reading hte insturctions provided prior to doing it...

it is NOT hard, but then again, with the vast array of player levels and ages, i can see where some may have issues.

none the less, i did it first time and like them....KEEP THEM AS IS.

I am using a trackball for all my desktop needs. That includes STO. And I managed it the second time I tried (the first time went awry due to me not knowing what to expect). Hence, what do we learn? Making assumptions and generalizing is a bad habit. :)
