I was noting in another thread the difference between people's space control setups in the "slingshot effect" objective. I've never used anything BUT my mouse to move. It hit me that control style my influence your enjoyment/immersion of a gameplay mechanic.
So I'd just like two bits of information from everybody, as devs look at ground revamps for Season 4. I strongly suspect there's correlation that devs may want to look at. Maybe with your biggest controls complaint as a third comment.
Rate Your Enjoyment of Ground/Space and tell us what control scheme you use.
SPACE COMBAT
Space: 8.5/10
Controls: Mouse for movement. Numbers for control bar. I click BO abilities.
Complaint: Too many abilities for the number pad without shift keys.
GROUND COMBAT
Ground: 8/10
Controls: Mouse for movement. Numbers for control bar.
Complaint: Too many times when there's half a second with no button to press/spam.
You want to smash kbd ... it not going to make ground more fun.
I personaly hate kbd smash as only option... there has to be other options (cover/tactic).

I know these arguments.
I'm just asking:
What do you move with and what do you trigger abilities with?
I think this may be valuable info and insight. I think that if it doesn't affect enjoyment, it at least forecasts what types of players enjoy what types of things.
I enjoy STO especially because I can play it (almost) exclusively with my keyboard. Using the mouse for an extended period is very uncomfortable to me.
Currently I enjoy ground combat more than space, but that's because enemies in space PvE are not really challenging. The last two series introduced some new ground combat concepts with the Breen and Devidians, but we haven't seen anything like that in space so far.

That's interesting. I find keyboards uncomfortable and have often researched what it would take to dual wield mice in games. (Few games would properly support two cursors.)
I mainly use the aswd keys to control my movement in space, with the addition of q & e for ground.
I use 1-6 for my main abilities, 1, 2, & 3 for the three firing modes for weapons, and my main abilities get assigned to 4, 5, & 6, with the lesser abilities relegated to 8 & 9. I press them the same as I would any other key, no mouse needed.
Things like Hypo-sprays get bumped to the Ctrl bar, and I generally click them, but in a pinche I'll stretch my left pinky to the left Ctrl key and then hit the proper number on the numpad.
I'd rate my ground control scheme a 9 out of 10.
In space, I use 2 for aft torpedoes, and 5 for forward torpedoes, always. I have a predilection for HY Torps and Tractors, they get 4 & 6 respectively (usually).
1 gets either Beam overload, or Cannon Rapid Fire, 3 often gets either Torpedo Spread, or some other ability depending on my build, RSP, Photonic Shackwave, etc..
7 is always always always Evasive Maneuvers. While 8 is just as often Emergency power to Shields (that is, always).
The Ctrl & Alt bars make up the variances in my Space set ups. The Ctrl Bar is usually defensive abilities, and the Alt bar is usually offensive, stretching my pinky and thumb of my left hand to activate them.
But Alt-9 is always Full Impulse, and Alt-0 is always Transwarp to ESD.
I'd rate it a 7.5 out of 10.
My one suggestion is to allow the "9" key on the numpad to work to trigger our abilities bars already!
Controls used - WASD for movement (mouse for more precise movements), Mouse for camera, Tab or click target depending on situation, click for shortcuts, click for BO powers.
Complaint: UI needs to officially support large shortcut tray along side the BO/weapon power trays.
Ground Experience - 6/10
Controls used - WASD for movement, mouse for camera, tab or click to target depending on situation. No 1-3 for attacks, click to use abilities.
Complaint: Ground combat feels too stiff and jerky, smoothing of the animations and softening the cooldowns on the fire keys would certainly help.
I mainly use mouse to move in both... using mouse with left hand.
My most used skills are on numpad 1-10 ... 2nd ctrl + numpad 1-10 (Space - 3rd click with mouse - there is no skils that I need to smash on this tab).
I use autofire for common attacks, manualy executing special ones...
There is some defense skills I would like to be able to script or set on auto so I will have more time to react, but ... not possible for now.

I use the same controls. However, I'd rate both combat types at about a 9. I'm sure that there are ways to improve, but I'm quite happy with things as they are. I enjoy ground combat quite a bit, which I understand is something of a rarity, though I am not sure entirely why.
guess i could throw in a few ground combat thoughts, mainly, ide speed things up.
- Less health in general, or higher weapon damage.
- Higher bonus to dmg when flanking
- Different effective dmg based on range, for example, a sniper rifle should do 100% damage even from long distances. Pistols should be more effective up close.
- Damage modifiers for melee, for example, a rifle but attack on an enemy that fell down should A) look different (a swing downwards) and have a higher crit chance
-Maybe modify expose to either full expose (current orange animation) and a half expose (same animation but in blue for example)
- Melee combat mode, in which the person who engages in melee combat (for example a klingon with bat'leth) would get more damage from ranged weapons, whereas the person who gets engaged by said klingon gains a resistance to ranged damage (because there's a crazy klingon hacking away at him which makes it harder for him to get hit from a distance)
- Officer class based bonusses on gear, for example, an engineer could have stronger body armor, a tactical officer could do more damage with weapons (or even a special tac only ability with weapons) and a science officer would obviously have better shields and maybe even other health related bonusses
- Cover, adding rocks etc to maps, and having them provide bonusses could also make it more interesting. And certain powers could have + damage when dealing with enemies in cover (photon grenade for example)
- More melee (not MUCH more but still a bit more) like that Gin'tak Spear, and an ability to use these weapons in a defensive + def way
- Ground XP, for example, when your character uses the same weapon in every fight, he should get better at it. be it melee or ranged.
Controls: I switch between mouse and WASD as i feel fit.
On my Cruiser i am more using WASD because of the slow turnrate and use the mouse to klick most abilities. I use 1-4 as hotkeys if at all.
On all my chars i have set F1 - F4 to switch the energy level presets.
On my Escort i use the Mouse to steer more often but also the WASD keys from time to time, depends on the enemy movement and my firing arcs.
I vote space down to 7/10 because i like the gameplay but the difficulty is not challenging at all on Advanced but on Ground i do not want to play Elite.
Complaint: Too many Hotkeys period.
GROUND COMBAT
Ground: 4/10
Controls: WASD is setup like ego shooter (A and D is allwas strafe, never turn), hold RMB and move mouse to turn.
Complaint: Tab targeting, Predefined ground role by KIT, some Kit's are worse then others especially in Ground PVP there are much useless KIT's
Only 2 weapon slots, i'd like to have a meele weapon (more then 2 Bat'leth's PLZ!) a Pistol and a rifle and all visible on body while out of combat (think Gears of War).
Firing with 1 + 2 just SUX.
Slow reaction times when switching weapons, should be instant and cancel the current action.
Autofire doesn't work that good for Bat'Leth's but i'd like to have it ON on my Pistol/Rifle... there is no fast way to switch auto fire ON/OFF in battle, right click doesnt allways react fast enough, and it doesn't remember what weapon you set to autofire but only what Hotkey.
+ extra annoying wipe my whole team in a few shot's Mob's
+ Maps without propper respawn points, especially in Exploration Maps.
= 4/10

I'm actually rating on an actual scale of 1-10, rather than the Game review industry standard of 6-10 . Space combat is pretty much where I want/expect it to be, if too easy, and the UI annoyance regarding the large Shortcut tray and the BO power tray not being officially available for use together.
Ground combat... Well, it's not particularly bad, but it is rather average... Doesn't mean that I don't have fun doing it, (as one example, last night I loved doing a shatner roll out of the way of a plasma grenade thrown my way, and immediately stood up and fired my Devidian reward phaser, vapourising the guy who threw the 'nade), but I do think that there's plenty of improvements needed for a better score. Improvements that I believe are on the way

If you substitute a toon pic for your current pic...you probably won't get the response you're currently getting...if it is...in fact...bothering you that much. You're very good looking with a pick in a public forum. Guys...and maybe some girls are gonna hit on you. And...thx for the tips.
How do you stop the whole environment from spinning when using the mouse in ground combat. My toon is all over the place. I have tried adjusting the mouse/look sensitivity and it doesn't help that much..either it's too slow or out of control. Any othe settings I should be looking at? Is there an optimum combination of settings?

based only on that pic id give her a 5.7 out of 10.
i happen to leave my house every once in a while and meh. a tad bit attention whoarish imo but back to cursors and that stuff
