What is going on with the look of the ships?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I've got to say that the game has improved over the last 12 months and i'm glad i'm back. However, what on earth is going on with some of the ships? The Federation dreadnought looks like it has a big ***** in the middle. Is that what new ships will look like, more ***** nacelles shoved on them?

Some more imagination and keeping with Star Trek please. It seems some ships have one or two things added / twisted / plonked to make them a "new" ship. Nothing new at all.

Thanks.

Are you talking about the Jupiter-class or the Galaxy-X?

-caresses the typhoon class- just a fuulish little man deary - don't listen to him

I think STO has done a wonderful job keeping in line with the Trek ships we saw coming into use during the last years of TNG/DS9 - the Typhoon looks like a Sovvie/Gal/Prom hybrid and the Jupiter looks like a cross between a Hope/Cheyenne class

    We wants ^_^

Don't blame STO if you don't like the designs - blame the series that started to introduce the designs

The Federation Dreadnought is from canon. It really should be able to go Warp 13 in sector space though.

Heh, the Galaxy X has 3 nacelles in the TNG finale. So it's supposed to look like that.

The alternative to the Cannon ships like the Galaxy X, Hope Prometheus seem to be overdeveloped ships with fins, gills, bumps, arches and spoliers sticking out of them.

Envoy, Noble, Majestic, Imperal, all the science varients and the Nebula and Galaxy refit varients spring to mind..

Shame, I always thought the Federation design trends were to streamline the ship, making the lines flow and look elegant:

    Example 1*
    Example 2
    Example 3

And not making them look like something out of Star Wars or some other sci-fi concept.

    Imperial class - Though I

    Imperial class2

*I threw Voyager in to help further the point of streamlining the lines/elegant - if you compare it to say the ships that came before.

The thing that bothers me about many of the cryptic designs are the misplaced holes and strange angular designs that I see. I also see a lot of misproportioned pieces that were put in to kinda/sorta fit with a canon design and end up looking funky.

Case and point: Envoy Exploration Cruiser

Outside of the general shape that ship does not look starfleet to me, it just looks like someone skinned parts a galaxy class and cut huge gaping holes into if for no real reason. I kinda like parts of it from certain angles but overall I just think its a bad design. Its an easy target but many of the reasons why I don't like this is found in a lot of the cryptic designs.

Got to say, never saw that. I like the odd film but i'm not a hardcore fan. :)

Still, it looks damn stupid IMO.

    Galaxy: http://www.stowiki.org/Federation_Dreadnought_Cruiser

It doesn't look bad in that picture, but in game, lol

That would be the future refit of the Enterprise-D from the TNG finale All Good Things...

So you can blame them for the design you don't like, and blame the fans for making Cryptic incorporate it into STO :p

Yeah, it looks off but I bought it for the cloak and the lance. Unfortunately cruiser turn rates sucks like a singularity so I stopped flying it.

Technically you fall into a singularity, not get sucked in. :p

IN all seriousness though, i never really cared for it. I would purchase it if i though i would use it, but alas i simply don't care for the turn rate of it.

I don't get what people hate so much about the 3rd necelle... i allways liked the look of the Galaxy-X, they could have done more with it though.

I prefer the Cryptic designs to the canon stuff.. especially the retrofits. So freaking tired of seeing retrofits. It's like seeing a 1920s Sedan in 2010; ya it still works.. but they should not be as numerous as they are. Is there anymore Crpytic designed stuff coming down the pipe?

I hate the Cryptic own designs so far - except the Star Cruisers.

But I hate the needless retrofits even more. They spoil the ingame story/continuity - this is supposed to be the 25th century complete with 25th century Trek ships, not a fanboy joy ride through Star Trek of yesteryear.

Every retrofit that comes out seems to damage the internal context of the game. Would the Federation really, honestly make a NX replica or build more Excelsiors to fight a war when there are many many ships built after those that are, in all ways, better.

I want to see more Trek ships of this era (the era the game is based). I would prefer for them to be more inkeeping with the Star Trek design, but I'd settle and pay for the Imperial Class over the Excelsior retrofit if it meant getting back to developing the story and gaming World.

That sir, was a very good post.

Although I have stuck with the enterprise, excelsior and now voyager ship look-a-likes mainly as they feel Star Trek at the moment. I've bought some retrofits, but when using some of them I don't feel like I'm playing the right game so they were a waste of money to me.

Yeah this is still the 25th century, but the Imperial class is just hideous.

I don't understand what the desingers thought when designing certain ship, or ship parts.
Those holes and edges are really ugly and inappropriate for a federation starship.
I made a Example of a ship with no holes (i was in a rush, so don't be too harsh)
    http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/7673/ship001.jpg
Look at the upper half of the ship, would it have been so hard for the designers to make a complete ship, instead of one that is half eaten by carpet moths?

The Envoy class alway reminded me on this http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Datei:Phyllocrania_paradoxa_Morphology.jpg&filetimestamp=20080305233858
It's like a Race of Insects wanted to copy a Galaxy Class. It is just disgusting somehow.

I really really hate Cryptics designs.
It doesn't matter which parts you are using, something just isn't right.
Why cant Cryptics designers make GOOD looking Federation ships?
I mean ok, they want to play around with some strange proportions and details,
    BUT NOT ON STARFLEETS SHIPS.
Use some minor races ships for your experiments!!!

I am missing some Options to make our ships look good.
    - Why cant we even change the size of some parts at the ship taylor? That would help a lot.

    - Give us more Ship parts, i dont care if they are already existing on lower Tier ships or if they are new.
(I hate to be forced to fly around with a Star Cruiser, because most other Cruisers are just a pain for my eyes.)

    Thank you for reading.

    BLASPHEMY!

I LOVE the Imperial class :D it looks like a wartime sovvie - almost like the Achilles class - and (given the fed fondness for greebles and pointless-looking armor) very in line with what the show was seen leading up to (case in point the Akira and the Defiant) it's not like Voyager or the Original Sovereign (all one piece) but rather a 'segmented' design that would be harder to destroy (some of the weaknesses the Galaxy and other classes ran into during the Klingon and Dominion wars) than their predecessors. The Envoy also matches that and actually LOOKS like it could stand up to a Negh'Var :D

All joking/fanboism aside, I agree that the refit TRIBBLE is getting old... if we MUST have refits. I want some MODERN refits - I.E Sov, Prometheus and Intrepid class refits

I agree whole heartedly. I want more new ships designed for this era and I want them to look Trek(The Imperial does not look Trek IMO). Although i would love a Star Cruiser Retrofit I love their design.
