ok so first part of the mission and ive had to redo it 5 times, and not done it yet, science ships are not made to turn and i have not had to manover at speed before, while this would be an ok mini game why frustrate me on a mission i have to do to complete a mission chain. i'm ok with getting killed in combat, but i never wanted to be a pilot, no captin in the series or films was the pilot on a ship (except occasional runabout stuff) so why make us deal with it, just have a command to lay in the course and go. am i the only one p*s*e* off with this. i mean rly, im an engineer damn it jim not a pilot.
Well I have done it in a cruiser and an escort, not a science vessel although that is next.
Some advice, full impulse is not necessary.
Move as little as possible. Use the A and D keys to make minor course corrections.
Aim for the next ring just before you start to pass through the current ring.

Cruised through in my Recon Science at Full Impulse. No problem. Used mouse steering (both buttons).
I suspect all those attempts running the Race level in Freelancer paid off.
I've now attempted this more than a dozen times. At least, I stopped counting at a dozen. My ship is an exploration cruiser refit.
I have not been able to come close even once.
I have followed all of the suggestions given in this thread. Mouse steering. Minor corrections. No full impulse.
Aiming for the next ring? How exactly? You can't SEE the next ring, so you'd have to know where it was GOING to be. And, when you're off on your guess, you're toast.
This actually seems insane. It's using a set of skills in the game I've never used before, don't want or need for anything other than this, and will probably never use again.
Every time I attempt this I either end up far outside the arc of the path or wobbling into the star. All I can think is there is some trick to it i can't pull off - or some feel for it that I just don't have.
This is one of the stupidest things I have seen in this game.
I have tried this at least 20 times. steering with the mouse or the keyboard it doesn't matter. The best i can do is 3 gates and then no control just lag, even just looking to find the gate lag.
This could be the best mission in the game but what does it matter if I can't even get to the real part of the mission.
Oh, I also flying a science ship, going to try another see if it makes a difference.
edit
nope just tried a QulDun BoP just as much lag.
also my video settings are as low as i can make them.
I've not had an issue with the rings at all, tried it with sov, raptor and Karfi carrier and got through first time each time.
First time through with sov had it on full impuse, the other 2 times went through on normal engine power. Steered with the mouse and followed the guide rail graphic ( looks like the star lanes in sector space)

Man, can't believe I'm not the only person who recognized this. :P
Ran into a problem on my first run (alt-tabbed to IM a friend, went back in and found out that first ring accelerated me a LOT more than I expected), and stayed in full impulse the entire first failed run.
Did the warp out/warp in thing to reposition, but I was apparently still at full impulse and passed through the first ring before the mission could fully initialize, so I missed it again (make sure you come to a full stop after a failed attempt before repositioning to avoid this).
Third time was the charm, and I did it in a Star Cruiser without any difficulty, so any ship should be able to pull this off.
.... it was easy , first try was to see hopw they meant , then i did when i tried , seriously dont see whats so hard?
Well, hey, since YOU found it easy, it must be easy, right?
I seriously do not understand people who respond like this. What exactly are you saying, other than "Nahnah, I did it fine, what are you, an idiot?" It certainly is in no way helpful.
I've now attempted this - which is only the beginning of a mission which still has to be completed - for over an hour. I'm not a moron. I'm not somehow deficient. I simply cannot - no matter how many times I try - get my ship to follow an arc. Whether that's because of some kind of lag or whatever else, the margin of error in this is far, far too small to be reasonable.
I've had no serious issues completing anything else in this game except when dealing with bugs. Some missions have been challenging now and then, but eventually you learn from your mistakes and get through. I STILL haven't found the Breen Capital Ship Snosk, but I don't come into the forums complaining about it - I get that it is rare and hopefully sooner or later it will turn up.
But this - this is ridiculous. It should be a minor challenge at most. Yet, it seems to have been configured to that only certain configurations within certain tolerances will have it easy, and the rest will have a difficult time. I don't really care if the configurations that have it easy are the majority or not.
I've tried this with keyboard navigation, Xbox 360 controller, and trackball (I don't have a mouse but the trackball is not that different) and nothing has worked. I zing off high and wide or fall below the line because apparently I can't be precise enough. No one should have to reconfigure their entire gameplay setup just to complete this one part of this mission.
And, in the end, the point of this is to have fun. Getting frustrated doing the same thing over and over is not fun. This isn't learning to play piano or guitar, it's a minor part of a game which should be reasonably simple to master. Instead I find myself on these forums reading about how EASY some people found it.
I'm sure your answer to homelessness is to just tell homeless people to buy a house, too, right?
have to agree this a was a really stupid start to the mission since piloting is not really a major part of the game beyond aim weapons at enemy hit fire button
I agree with JohnBlair, telling the forums that the ring segment is easy is demotivating to players who are having difficulty.
I wouldn't presume to tell you that Calculus is easy if you're having difficulty with it. It's simply insulting when reading such posts that imply that you are a poor player and deficient in piloting.
I've tried it with mouse steering, using the kleyboard as well as reducing speed to 1/3 non-impulse power and am still unable to do it. This segment of the episode should not be a trial in patience but rather a quick and semi-enjoyable way to enter the past.
Maybe you need more practice. I had to do it twice with my first toon and it wasn't that difficult. My second too I got it on the first try. I don't understand your issue. The only issue that ****ed me off is at the end. Since you haven't gotten there yet. I will not meantion it here. Keep trying man.
i have 3 charicters, all did this in a team NON managed the slingshot, i cant fly, a german guy who had been playing the game for a few days, who didnt know where to change costume, did it first time. i think i cant fly now, so i will not leap of my garage roof as planed, it would hurt a bit
I fly an Exploration Cruiser as well. Did it in my first shot with my fleet. Quite fun. If we had spots like that in sector space it would make getting to places a lot easier.
I did it on my third try...for some reason I kept missing the second to last ring, although I swear I was inside it each time. Use the mouse, and do it at half speed. Keep your turns and course corrections small, slow, and deliberate. If you try and maneuver too fast, you'll end up over-correcting and miss it. If you're having trouble making the turn (I did it in a cruiser, so I don't know how a sci or escort can't make it) either decrease your speed or a slight climb/dive. It might also help to zoom the camera out.
I've now attempted this more than a dozen times. At least, I stopped counting at a dozen. My ship is an exploration cruiser refit.
You are able to Sep your saucer right? Do that before going through the rings... it'll give you the maneuvering ability you need to do this... I had to try twice on the Excel before getting it.
Edit: IF you are getting frustrated with this... wait to you get to the ground combat where one of the big Devs can life drain your entire team at once killing them from full health and nothing you can do to stop it, and that's on normal.
Well, hey, since YOU found it easy, it must be easy, right?

your avatar fits this sentence, did you do that on purpose?
Well, 9 fails for me so far and not even been close.
"This isn't what I signed up for man!"
LOL, crazy times. I hope to only ever see this once and I hope the Devs are counting how many times people like me and the OP are failing this wacky TRIBBLE.
I didn't have much of an issue with this either. Got a little rubber-banding on the first attempt which bumped me beyond the final ring, but the second try was smooth as butter.
If I had to guess, i'd imagine there is some kind of problem on the users end that's making this difficult; occasionally I find I have really bad rubber banding issues (latency up the wazoo) and other times I find I have very little trouble at all, so I'm curious if the IP is at the root of the issue, or perhaps something within the system itself.
I have no doubt that if I had been having rubber banding issues tonight that I'd be just as frustrated as the rest of you.
Getting past this part is worth it though (imo), I had fun with this episode; overall.
Intrepid class starship btw, tier 4 so I did this with a Long Range Science Vessel. I don't know if it'll help anyone but I had my engines set to full for this.
