Helmets

Dear Cryptic,

Would it be possible to get some sort of armoured helmet / headgear added into the game? I do find it hard to believe that with all that liquid plasma and disruptor bolts flying around that our rather pretty fed and klink captains would be poking their heads up at all. I daresay that the "canon" type people would say, "well you never see Jean Luc or Janeway wear helmets" - which is true, but perhaps if the protagonist of the series wore helmets would you be able to tell who was who?

Was thinking that if this was a well received idea by the community, to save devs and artists works, perhaps ask the said community for input and graphic sketches etc?

Kindly discuss and perhaps post some pics :)

Aside from the mechanics of it, its also not gonna be very useful since energy doesnt glance off like a bullet would.

They're working on some helmut tech for EV suits. The problem is that customization head features are making the helmut tech a little harder to work around. I'm sure once the tech is in place for EV suits combat helms wouldn't be hard to make after that.

Well, the security personnel in the TOS films did wear helmets.

That's so we couldn't tell who the actors were and Paramount didn't have to pay them as much. :D

For appearances sake, I'm not opposed to helmets being introduced. They would just absorb hits the same way our default body armors do presently (even though some players just turn off the appearance of the armor). Remember that helmets might adversely effect how our customized heads look. Some won't mind that in a temporary sense. But others will just hate it and never wear them.

I'm still hopeful that the TMP uniform set might introduce the security armor/helmet combo. I think that might be a good place to start. Assuming that it's possible at all.

    Don't call me, "Tiny".

I could see an application for helmets if they absorbed energy, or used something to deflect energy weapons.

As others said, though, they would have to design helmets that accounted for customized head options.

Didn't you know? Nobody in Star Trek ever gets shot in the head. All shots hit chest or abdomen.

As far as the customised heads are concerned would it not be as simple as to have a helmet mesh that would scale appropriately to the relative head options? i.e the way uniforms currently scale perfectly(ish) to massive bellies or arms or legs etc?

And with the absorption of hits, not so fussed about that especially if helmets did provide bonuses then players would be discriminated against for not using them, I just thought it could be a little more immersive if it looked like your boffs and captains were suited for war when you beam down to ground combat.

I don't know what's involved on the tech side. I know it wasn't originally in the game and Dstahl said they're working on it so as to have EV suit missions in the future.

Well why would they bother? chest is much larger target and a weapon on kill is just as effective either way.
