Hey all,

Im looking for a new game to play and wouldnt mind reading some of your opinions on this game.

Does this game run like Eve online where everyones in one universe, not separate realms? So if my friends and i play, we will be playing together.

Also, how good is the story line?

Cheers ;)

I'll say this: at $19 for the cost of the game and the first month free, what's the risk? Give it a shot and see how you like it.

As for comparisons to other MMOs, I cannot comment on it. STO is the first MMO I've ever played. I'm 28, so it's not an age issue. I love computer games; I just never got into MMOs. I'm a "closet" Trekkie. So STO is my crack...

    Hey sliderjt,

STO, is played on one server, broken up into instances. The game should automatically put you and your friends into the same instance (if it doesn't, you can easily switch manually).

I've never played Eve so I can't give you a comparison. What I will say though, is it's a fun game, it had some great story driven missions (unfortunately not many on the Klingon side though - although the ones they have are some of the best in the game).

The game has certainly come a long way since its release and the Devs have certainly got a huge pile of things they want to add (and probably an even bigger pile of requests for things us players want them to add).

If you're looking for a time-sink type of game with masses of depth, then STO probably isn't the game for you. However, if you're looking for a game you can jump into for an hour or two and have some great fun, then STO is certainly worth a look.

As Commodore_Bob said, for the price, it's certainly worth trying.

Hear that whistling sound? That's your question going over my head. I'll have to defer to someone who has played other MMOs and knows more about what you are talking about.

STO only has one server but people are separated by instances. You can switch instances by clicking the instance bar on top of the mini map in the upper right of the screen.

STO is my fourth MMO. Its a good deal more casual and less intimidating (shallow difficulty curve, friendly community, lots of rubber-banded encounters) than others, but there is less to do at endgame. However its still a very new game and still growing rapidly.

The game is ostensibly one universe, though there aren't many persistent areas with lots of players in. Instead of multiple shards (like Ultima ONline for instance) STO uses instances, i.e. players are dynamically shared between servers to spread the load. Players are all in the same universe, but split into groups of 30 to prevent the game from slowing down too much.

You can change instances at any time, and the map tells you which instance you are in, so you can easily meet up with people as long as you join the same instance.

Either way, its a great game and LOTS of fun. II would strongly recommend it. :)

The game is nothing like eve online.. I'm a long time eve veteran.. Still play it to this day.. STO has nothing in common with it, except spaceships..

Gameplay is completely differant.. I don't want to say it's good or bad, as everyone has an opinion BUT

    - STO is much more PVE centric, emphasis is on PVE story arcs and missions, where as EVE is a more PVP open sandbox concenpt game, STO is more of a theme park.

    - combat is completely differant -- ships in EVE are very role-specific, combat is brief, nailbiting and leaves you in tears -- in STO combat is slower, more tactical, more drawn out and 'fun/fluffier'

    - you won't find a crazy player driven deep economy in STO like you have in EVE

if you enjoy spaceships and lasters, give it a go.. tho a fair word of warning -- the first 10 levels *can* get a little dull and repetetive, however the missions become more fun and engaging as you level up and get more powers etc..

basically if you're looking for an experience similar to EVE, this isn't it.. it's a very differant game, but IMO is good (and getting better with each patch)

I will add -- because you asked 'how is the story line'

    - the story line in STO is great.. really! the episode story arcs are probably the best part of the game.. they really shine with the missions that were developed later (after release) like the new daily's and weekly ep's

the storyline in EVE is practically non-existant, except for the 'stories' that player organizations create themselves (via wars, conquering, scamming etc..)

Great! When you start playing, type "/friend AdmiralChase". I will accept your friend request, and whenever you see me on and have a question, or can't finish a mission, send me a message and I will be more than happy to help. I also log into STO's chat server via a XMPP client, so I can be reached in-game even when I'm not actually playing, so send me a message and I will answer your questions. If it's something you need help with, I will login if I'm available to do so.

The trick to REALLY enjoying this game to its fullest potential (especially when leveling) is to take your time and read the full mission text of each story-arc mission they give you.

Too many people have the "I WANT IT ALL AND I WANT IT NOWW!!!!" mentality, and they just keep clicking "Next" until they're done with the dialog. These are the people who usually complain about the game being "too quick" and "nothing to do".

I took my time, read everything (been a Trekkie since I was in 4th grade in the early 80's), and found the game very enjoyable.

Also, if you're into it, there's a very dedicated RP community in this game... but conversely, at no time in this game is RP "forced" on you.

Take your time, enjoy it, and never ever be afraid to ask questions -- the community here is the best of any MMO I've played (and there have been many).

STO, while not having added anything to pvp in months (hai devs, you forget about us pvp'ers eh), does have a very pointed learning curve between pve and pvp at max level.

While yes, PVP is currently lacking a bit (they're working on it though... vehemently), I do agree that the play styles between PVE and PVP are *very* different.
