..And I'm wondering if there's any way we could see the work-in-progress shots of the "old ESD" he mentioned in that interview?

    It's still early - I bet it's still gray-shaded.

It's been talked about by DStahl, that the Earth Spacedock from the series is his favourite

Let me poke Stahl and see if we can dig something up. No promises though!

If he is using the "old" design of space dock I imagine it will look like this.

    http://www.startrekonline.com/dyncontent/startrek/uploads/Wallpaper-07-1920x1200_0.jpg

This is not something I photoshoped, this is just an old wallpaper from the site. It looks like some old concept art with a couple of actual ship models superimposed onto the frame.

No, every item in the new ESD isstill just a 'wire-frame model'. ;)

I must admit that I like the idea of the old ESD design. Although story wise it may not make much sense that it is still around in this time, we do know that it's design is still in use as starbases in TNG era. I forget, did we ever see the mushroom ESD in TNG? Howabout Voyager?

    Thanks,
    Duncan

I have to be honest with you people, i don't understand this feeling y'all have that something that's over 200 years old shouldn't be in the current timeline just because they're old. Some things work, and some things work WELL, which doesn't leave that much space for improvement.

Look at toilet bowls, umbrellas, shoes, light bulbs, light switches, door keys, hand guns.. they're all basically the same they were when they were invented. Granted, we have speaking toilet bowls, super compact umbrellas and solar powered light bulbs, but that doesn't mean that their older cousins couldn't, or shouldn't be used.

And the example of hand guns. It doesn't matter if i fire a top of the line M-4 assault rifle or an very old winchester rifle at your head. Both of them would kill you.

    The old ESD.

    Dock ships? Check
    Repair ships? Check
A lot of space for weapons? Check
    Wasn't destroyed in canon? Check
    R&R options? Check
Staging area for big fleets? Check
    Big and powefull? Check

    The NEW ESD

    Dock ships? Check
    Repair ships? Check
A lot of space for weapons? Check
    Wasn't destroyed in canon? Check
    R&R options? Check
Staging area for big fleets? Check
    Big and powefull? Check
    UGLY? Check

    Draw your own conclusions :D

I agree. They can have an updated design based on the old style. For crying out loud, the wheel on your car today is nothing like the chariot wheels used in Roman times, yet they are exactly the same.

And remember, cart wheels and car wheels are used for different purposes. Cart wheels are meant to be used in chariots, and they're still the same they were during the roman empire.

We'll get you something a little closer to this going live.

I liked the "Old ESD" ....but that's the point, it's the OLD one; I'm pretty much ok with the "new and improved" 25th century ESD.

BUT it we could somehow have the "Old ESD" with obvious 25th century upgrades, I'd prob be for it 100%....as long as there is a story behind the change of ESD...if we get a quick swap then that'll be dissapointing tbh. ;)

The problem I have the current one is that it seems to designed as a station and not a very good spacedock.

Most of the spacedocks ingame are underscaled such that big vessels could not fit in them. I am fairly sure that if we tried to park a Star Cruiser in the current one, it might fit, but nothing else would.

But that's what they did: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=177321

I have to say, I really dig the look of ESD right now, and I hope it doesn't change.

    Good catch!

Man I can't believe I missed that, considering that I'm a huge fan of Stargate.

/signed - this would be a good thing in my book
I've said it before and I'll elaborate a little this time:
Does it really make sense to apply current rates of technological progress to Star Trek anyway?

The game takes place about 260 years after Enterprise. Not to assume people can't/won't do the math, but that's like comparing now to 1750. It's obvious that the technical aptitude of the UFP isn't making nearly as much movement in the Trek era as Earth's currently is. Most of the time, comparing VOY to ENT seemed more like comparing Desert Storm to WWII or even the Korean War than to the French/American Revolutions.

Things have reached more of a plateau, so it wouldn't be *totally* ludicrous to be able to retrofit [ANYTHING YOU WANT] to being [viable in 2409]. The US Navy's Midway class was in service (with retrofits) from 1945 to 1992. Let the [people that like older Trek stuff] have their fun, it's not gonna "break" the game. (Not that the quote in my sig indicates I'd have any sort of bias or anything...;) )

I wrote it to defend the NX in-game, but with the amazing *improvised* equipment re-purposing that's common in Trek (Kirk can make a cannon out of random TRIBBLE and our own captains turned TOS stuff into Devidian detectors, just for a couple of examples) I don't think it's unreasonable for the Starfleet Corp of Engineers to remake anything we've ever seen on screen into something useful in-game. The story just has to explain *that* they did it and *why* they did it.
