Anyone noticed the music when doing the Eta Eridani dailies? It's distinctively un-Trek with someone rocking out on a set of drums. I've heard music like that elsewhere, in Eve Online missions. What's the deal with hiring a garage band for STO?

It starts like that and then moves on to a regular drum set, complete with cymbals. If you don't have a good ear for it, try turning off all sound except music and crank it up. Sounds like they hired some teenager practicing in his basement.
Keep in mind that the music in star trek can come from thousands of different worlds. There are several episodes involving a crew going on an away mission to some shady bar as part of an investigation, or to a new planet and encountering non-orchestral, odd sounding music.
Jeez, you think a couple background musical pieces don't fit in Trek? Try playing any of the games from the Dynasty Warriors series: Chinese history + Japanese butt-rock = DW battle music.

Considering Toei's approach to Dynasty Warriors was "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" + anime + thinly veiled history lesson, the music fit pretty well.
Agreed. I would kill to actually have the soundtrack from the Star Trek series. I mean how goosebumpy would it be when you warp to DS9 and the DS9 theme song plays in the background?

Overall I don't mind it - DW 4 was actually very good and I own the soundtrack - but it's sometimes pretty ridiculous considering the setting. Samurai Warriors soundtracks, on the other hand, are near perfect IMO.

Licensing I believe is why we don't have that, but it would be nice if we did. I turned off all in-game music, and if I'm in the mood for it, I'll open up iTunes and play the Trek music I got off their music store.
As a sound designer myself, I happen to really like the new music, I think it adds something to the combat sequences. While I agree there should be a healthy dose of symphonic instrumentation during peaceful moments, it actually couldn't hurt to throw in more percussive elements and synthesizers, similar to what the 'Best of Both Worlds' and Star Trek Nemesis scores did. Overall I think this game needs much more variety in music as the old tracks get very repetitive very quickly.
For those of you that say "modern" music isn't trek, go check out the various TOS scores. There are plenty of tracks with a very contemporary 60s tv show vibe, including hand drums (congas, bongos, even cowbell) and acoustic guitars.
Star Trek 4 was scored almost entirely on synthesizers. Both Star Trek 3 and DS9 soundtracks had "electric guitar" versions of their themes as well.. Even TMP made good use of analog synthesis for soundscape creation.
Finally, let us not forget the enterprise theme..
My point is, orchestral music is fine.. but trek has always flirted with the contemporary sound as well..
Glad it was not just me thinking the music was different. I noticed that the music had changed in both the new Eta Daily and in some of the Dividian series. I really like the new stuff and I am all for some more variety in the game music. I do think that the new music fits really well when it has been used.

Do you mean the Taiko Drums?

on a serious note, the scores imo should be classical/jazzrock/fusion like
As for the drums, I haven't heard anything new music-wise but I haven't been playing the dailies much.
It's a welcome new piece of music and I vote to keep stuff like this coming! It's nothing incredibly epic feeling, but It just fun.
I like all the music they have done for the game. It's really quite great. Kudos to Cryptic.
Maybe Don Ho is a better fit...or tom jones.......

I will always recommend music from Bear McGreary. Of course... then you'll get a lot of Taiko drums again.
Stormshade
Please leave it in and keep it up devs.
Cool idea!
Electric guitar & drums with backup orchestra sure, but never on their own, NOT in Star Trek.

I like the music from "What Lies Beneath". It fit that episode perfectly. But I don't think it fits with the new daily missions.
