I have become less active and I'd like to suspend payment on my account. I plan to come back to STO some time later. Will all my progress be deleted? If it will not, how long will my character remain intact after I've stopped payment?
You won't lose any progress or your character. As for how long, i'd assume for the life of the game, deleting peoples toons just pushes them away from possibly coming back.

While we're incredibly sad to see you go, you can always come back. Your characters will always be there waiting for you to return and continue your adventures with them.
None of the games that I've played have deleted any information when you go inactive (i.e. you cancel your sub). All that happens is that characters and their items can't be used again until you start up payment again.
Thanks guys . No you can't have it. I'm comming back...if Neverwinter doesn't come out first. I enjoy this game, I just won't have time to play for a few months.
I left LOTRO and resubscribed a year or so later. My characters were still their, as were their skills. However all of my equipment and money was gone. I played for another 6 months and loaded all of my characters with gear and then canceled again. 9 months or so later they went F2P and all of my stuff was still there.
I bought a lifetime sub for STO (upon request from my wife) to avoid all the canceling and resubbing I've done with other MMOs.

Sony do.
I had two (2) accounts with Star Wars Galaxies, after 6 months inactive both were deleted. I had a Pirates of the Burning Sea Account ... after 6 months it, too, was deleted.
The idea was/is, to ensure you come back within 6 months or lose everything. I lost 2 years worth of levelling/equipment/vet rewards, all gone. There was no way I was going to go back after such a loss. Then, when they also did that to my Pirates account ... that was the last straw. I won't even touch a Sony MMO now. I know that if I don't get back within 6 months, I'll lose everything.
NCSoft also shook my confidence in them, big time, with the cancelling of my favourite MMO of all time, Tabula Rasa.

I never played any Sony MMO, so I had no idea. That just plain sucks.

Everquest don't delete, I haven't been subbed since 2005 and my characters are still there.
Ok gang, let's call this one done. I think the OP's question has been answered, and now we're talking about games that don't have "STO" as their acronyms.

(Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
As someone said, jut makes your departure all that more final...

Very true, never looked back at LotRO once they told me my character might not be permanent.
