Swap Traffic Controller with BOFF navigator

I'd rather have my own navigator/con officer ask if we should warp to sector X than a traffic controller.

just a simple idea.

Or just wait for the sector block borders to disappear as new tech allows larger areas (or streaming ships more easily)? :)

    Hah! I have caught you!

Streaming ships hmm? Is that the new tech in the works the Foundry build has everyone addicted to? I keep hearing about a new sector space and I don't have the access to see it. :o

On Topic: The tech for the dissolution of such rigidly based sector blocks has been asked for, and thought about for some time. dStahl has mentioned his wish to have everything flow together, so I don't think they'll be taking time to make a new piece of tech for your boff when they have much larger things to build.

this has nothing to do with the Foundry.

However, dstahl expressed a desire to merge sector blocks or do away with traffic control altogether.

Wasn't the idea of auto-zoning also tossed around to keep it simple in the mean-time?

What do you mean? Hitting an area on the map and bypassing flight control in the meantime?

Or just loading a new zone whenever near the border?

I think it was mentioned on a random episode of STOked as just an idea to not have to deal with flight control. Like you would set a threshold, or collision setting, and then autozone into the new sector block when that condition was met.

to get back on point, wouldn't it be a bit condescending of your bridge officer to tell you that you're not cleared to travel into deep space?

Actually, it would be their duty to inform you that you're not cleared for travel. They've be failing at their job by not saying anything.

First, I like the idea of the navigator replacing the random controller NPCs. Long term I hope we need neither for zone changes.

Secondly, some dev said that the current changes to sector space are cosmetic only, so no "size" or boundary changes are currently in testing, so I don't think the 'awesome secret' that the beta testers are keeping is precisely related to that.

The devs have made these statements

of course that would be better...... but you talk like this is right around the corner...

are they really that close to turning their tech inside out?

dstahl said that it's a long-term goal - not necessarily around the corner or even in-production.

Why make the change only to delete the work later?

why rent an apartment now when you'll have enough money to buy a house in a year?

except for the whole... needing shelter thing humans like so much...

the flaw in your analogy is that we already have shelter (Starfleet Traffic control).

Why remodel your house when you 'll probably get a new one next year?

(and, no, selling your current house doesn't work for the analogy).

i guess it comes down to whether we should sacrifice possible nice things now for nice things later.

    Fixed.

I'm the camp of waiting for something massively better to come along. These changes to grab people's perspectives much more and help change the opinion of people outside the game much more than slow small changes.

    A valid camp for sure.

I would be happy if setting a course for a sector border:

    A) disabled pop ups for any other sector borders.

    B) auto-accepted travel to the area you requested to go to.

Just junk the whole idea. I'm already at warp. By going straight I'm already warping into the next sector. Why should I give permission to do what is about to happen already?

Ideally, changing zones should be like what you see in WoW. You move from one zone to another and the color scheme changes, the background music changes and the name of the zone is announced in the corner of the screen. No confirmation dialogs.

I think this would only get done if they decide to give us actual positions for our boffs, which just might happen when or even after they change sector space.
