Setting aside the rule that the person sitting in a chair was referred to as Captain. I just think there are too many Rear and Vice Admiral's running around and it dilutes the significance of the rank.
Seriously, when watching Star Trek how many Admiral's did you see running around, fighting borg or commanding ships in deep space? (Except Kirk). Admiral's were sitting behind desks co-ordinating Fleets and giving missions often special ones.
Also in the game you are given you're own command because there is a lack of Captain's. So it makes sense that you are put on the path to becoming a Captain.
I would much rather see Captain as the highest rank achieveable and Rear Admiral a rank title offered to lifers (I'm not a lifer). I don't think there should be any more points obtainable once you reach Captain/Admiral (so readjust the points system).
As a further incentive to Lifers along with the title they should be given special non-combat features like Transwarp to all the key starbases, special clothing, things like that. I think the same logic should apply to the KDF and all other factions.

As this has been stated about 3000+ times since February (and yes i know you haven't been around that long but the search button has ), the rank list isn't changing.

Admirals Hansen and Ross come to mind. General Martok too. It was not uncommon for admirals to command ships in battle, and given that STO takes place during wartime it's not unorthodox to have admirals flying around.

Transwarp to major starbases is given by the Excelsior and completion of diplomatic missions. There is already a special vice admiral coat. Why do lifers deserve this above the rest of the players?
This is an old issue that has existed since the first day that Cryptic released the information several months prior to launch.
There are quite a few threads on the topic spread out throughout the forums, but Cryptic has stated that they are happy with the ranking system and have no plans to change it.

Wow first person I have ever heard asking for the skillcap to be lowered.
Wow you really do make threads here with fear of being flammed.
OK the rank system isn't changing. Fine.
Agree that in wartime exceptions are made. Just, for me, the inclusion of Admiral as a playable rank doesn't feel consistent with the story of the game. You were an Ensign on the way to making Captain.
I suggested lifers should get a special ingame rank, one because incentives to lifers is just good business and if the all mighty Cryptic ever see this post then the potential £££/$$$ may just be incentive enough for them to implement it.
Hello, and welcome to the Star Trek Online forums!
We've been complaining about ranks above Captain being in-game since we first found out about it some time early 2009. We complained for months. We started hundreds of threads about it. Finally, StormShade responded in one of the threads with: "Admiral is staying in the game, and we're not even going to consider changing that", or words to that effect. Most of us dropped it then, but we've never been happy about it.
I just thought that you should know that the Admiral ranks are never going to be removed from the game. Yeah, I'm not any happier about it than you are.

OK no mileage.
Lifers do get a special ingame rank, its titled [Career Officer] and displays on your character if you select it.
Although the ranking system is silly it really doesn't bother me.
I have a character at VA but my own little work-around is keep my in game title at captain and wear captain pips on my uniform. I really only see the names in the ranking system as a way to make each tier seem more dramatic.
I kind of agree about the rank system. I mean, I hope the game is around for a long time to come, yet the ranking system seems to have been developed so that you can get to Admiral (basically the highest rank you ever see in the show) as soon as the game got released.
How many different admiral ranks can they invent before it gets stupid? After a while there'll be more admiral ranks than anything else, and 90% of players will be one. I agree that it dilutes the impact of the rank, and goes against what you see in the shows.
Still, aside from renaming the ranks, I don't know how I'd fix the issue.
Or the more complex restructure it so Captain is the highest but you still get/need/have the same number of points as VA does today.
They could if they wanted to get creative make unique ranks within each class. So say Chief/Transporter Chief (Engineer). Head of Security (Tactical). Doctor (Science). Though, I know chief is a title you can give your Engineer Bridge Officer, I'm not sure this is true of the other BO classes or the playable character.
Seems pretty TRIBBLE that the developers don't at least take on board what the players are saying (assuming the majority don't like the present system).
Too late in the game to change it. In my opinion, they would have been better served leaving the Starfleet rank out of the leveling process, and have that be a trait of story-line progression.
Although, I think Admiral Kirk's rank in the movies lends a lot to them feeling they should allow for Admirals in field action.

We can all agree the present ranking setup is just wrong, but these guys are right, it's not gonna get changed. I was probably the most recent chump to start a thread complaining about the ranking and offering a solution.
The captain of a ship is billet: you can be higher ranks and still be "captain" of the vessel.
However, I do want gameplay that feels like Vice Admiral or Rear Admiral gameplay - instead "ye olde shooter" during those ranks. We should be interacting with multiships and issuing orders - instead of wandering around with a couple pets and doing pretty much the same activities we did as an ensign.
We have complained about the rank system and told them since launch. It doesn't make sense that the Federation would have so many Admirals and they just don't care that we don't like it.
It should have been... reputation based. You could unlock ranks as you level however you could choose your rank, would be referred to as that rank yet if your reputation level is the same as someone else you'll have access to the same stuff. Basically ranks would be a glorified title you could get higher access to and choose which you want to be identified as but ultimately would count for little.
You can KIND OF do that now by simply putting different rank pips on your uniform. However, they'll still call you "Rear Admiral, Junior Grade" and stuff because it's stupid.
I absolutely agree with the simple fact that it's not very cool to have all these admirals running around but it's unavoidable, it stays an MMO and progress is the key in these games.
This issue can personally be fixed though if you are in a fleet and you get a fictional ranks assigned. Like Floridaguy is the Fleet admiral and the head of starfleet's elite, though I would be considered a luitenant in the fleet or something. It would be nice if there is an actual fleet ranking system.
My favourite rank is luitenant commander, I do not why it just is:)
Edit:
I also really don't like being called Rear Admiral Upper Half Luckat by NPC's I'm passing, they should just cut it short to Admiral, regardless if you're upper, lower or vice

1) Where's Jieutenand Junior Grade?
