So with featured episodes being launched i have started playing again. However before i "quit" (i am a lifer though) i deleted my max rank toons, so this time i am levelling as science. Currently i am at Lt. Cmdr and am wondering:
  • Is there any way to convert the useless emblems of exploration i am acquiring en masse at max level yet?
  • Is there any point doing any of the featured episodes as a non level capped character due to the rewards being worthless at Cmdr?
  • Are orginal t5 ships worthless with the advent of retrofits? I mean do the retrofits completly invalidate the originals due to console/boff slots.
  • is any difficulty over normal even worth it reward wise? I have been playing at adv since coming back and tbh the loots/xp/skill points are still horrible.
  • is the Nebula as cool as it looks? I wanted that and the ambassador from day one and besides looking at the featured episodes, it going into the game is about all that drew me back. I am really hoping i wont be disappointed by it.
  • is there any other way of not getting enemies 20+ levels in my (levelling) dse's or do i just have to do them at US night time when the server is dead to have a chance? Oh and please don't tell me to just change instance, i do that and when the 2 instances both have 30+ level enemies in them, it makes getting much done impossible.

That's about all i can think of to begin with.

Cheers

Sweet so by the phrasing you've used I know this is going to be fun.

-Currently there is no way to convert emblems of exploration of various tiers to anything else. Now however at max rank you can convert emblems into several different currencies.

-Im not sure where you got your information from but most of the gear you get from the weekly series is really good and definitely useful past commander...since it levels with you.

-Do you see everyone flying around in only the retrofits at rank VA? They are all tier 5 ships, the retrofits have pluses and minuses. I still fly a Fleet Escort despite having a Defiant Retrofit (cloak wow...moving on).

-Well I normaly play at advanced and I find that the quality of the gear is significantly better then normal. I find that I get blue and green gear more frequently and on elite MUCH more often with even a few purples in explore missions. There is always that and making the game actually fun to play by providing a bit of a challenge.

-The Nebula is basically a cross teir 5 ship like the Excelsior was, instead of being a pure science ships its a cross between a science ship and a cruiser. Look i up on the C-store listing for its boof layout, I find that it works best in a support role so if you don't plan to group with people you will probably not like it.

-Yeah, jumping out and flying into an unoccupied DSE encounter. The problem occurs when a high level character jumps into a lower level DSE for whatever reason, bumping up the difficult level to match theres. Either that of you can team with that person and level match with them, artificially inflating your own level to match theres.

I'll take a stab at this:

Is there any way to convert the useless emblems of exploration i am acquiring en masse at max level yet?

Not currently, but DStahl is on record as saying he wants to reduce the number of currencies in the game. It sounds like in the future there will only be one or two currencies with which you buy things. This includes marks and emblems.

Is there any point doing any of the featured episodes as a non level capped character due to the rewards being worthless at Cmdr?

You'll note that several of the rewards have a infinity sign on their icon. This means that it will level with you. There have been several rewards that are quite useful in unconventional ways. That reminds me, I'm almost out of Breen Thermal Grenades. I wouldn't survive advanced without those things.

Are orginal t5 ships worthless with the advent of retrofits? I mean do the retrofits completly invalidate the originals due to console/boff slots.

Not at all, the retrofits fill in the gaps between the original t5s allowing more possible builds. There are still many who chose to keep they're original T5s at Vice Admiral. My tactical officer loves his sovereign, and not just for aesthetics.

is any difficulty over normal even worth it reward wise? I have been playing at adv since coming back and tbh the loots/xp/skill points are still horrible.

I've been playing on Advanced and I've noticed that the quality of the loot is generally higher. This doesn't stop you from getting common loot, I just see rare loot more often. I also play for the challenge of it. There are crazy people out there who play on Elite and actually seem to like it.

is the Nebula as cool as it looks? I wanted that and the ambassador from day one and besides looking at the featured episodes, it going into the game is about all that drew me back. I am really hoping i wont be disappointed by it.

It's not in yet, but there are plenty of people who would like to see it. Since the launch of the nebula, the devs have been focusing on bolstering the KDF's fleet lately so it may still be a little while. That said I do think we'll get is eventually.

is there any other way of not getting enemies 20+ levels in my (levelling) dse's or do i just have to do them at US night time when the server is dead to have a chance? Oh and please don't tell me to just change instance, i do that and when the 2 instances both have 30+ level enemies in them, it makes getting much done impossible.

This occurs when a high level player enters a lower level DSE. Since the enemies are dynamically spawned, this can result in ships being generated at the level of these high level characters. The devs have said they're looking into the problem.

I hope that answers all you questions.

Cheers for the answers. Good to know there's an icon on items that indicates "scales with you". Also, i knew how the +20 mobs in a DSE happens. I just didn't know if the dev's had pulled the proverbial finger out and done something about it or not, but you both clarified that., i'll just confine my DSE stuff til late night server time when the server's pretty much empty.

I'd like to say i am having fun again, but really nothing changed, so far i have seen the same bugs, lack of interesting levelling missions and repetitive content i saw levelling both my tactical's before i quit. Maybe things will be better when i hit max rank...who knows. I guess i can hope.

Just fyi im not sure if you know this Dreadscythe but both the Nebula and the Excelsior also have ingame lower teir variants at Tier 3 if you want to try it out first. You cannot purchase them with the ingame free ship token but I think they are about 110k credits or something like that.

You can also requisition the teir 5 version on the tribble server to see weather you want to either buy the Nebula for a full account unlock or grind for 200 marks of Exploration for a per-character unlock.

Edited due to lack of reading properly...oops :o

Yeah i knew there was a T3 nebula/excelsior. That's why i finally rolld science this time (hated t3 golfball). I think the above poster was referring to the Ambassador when he said not in game too.

    Cheers

Yeah sorry total lack of paying attention on my part.

I really can't wait for the Ambassador class as well, its one of my favorite canon ships.

Yep, would love a "pure" steamrunner as well. I don't like Cryptics spin on it, though they nailed the Akira and Defiant imo. Love those ships.

I'm testing the T3 Nebula right now.

I think it has promise, but ultimately, it needs help.

In my opinion, the Nebula is trying for "a little of this, a little of that" on too grand of a scale, and it really dilutes the ship's ability.

If the turn rate were bumped up just a little bit, and maybe an extra weapon slot in the back, it would be a fine ship. But as it sits right now, it's not a very effective cruiser, and it's very ineffective as a science ship because the turn rate is too slow for most science abilities.

However, I don't think Cryptic intends to change it's specs, so we are stuck with it as is. If you were hoping for real science ship to equal the golf ball, but with the better looking Nebula shell, you will be disappointed.

I'm actually not having as much trouble as I anticipated having with mine (now at Cmdr 5). Between the Tractor to hold them in my front torpedo fire and Feedback Pulse I'm kicking some serious PvE butt.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the Nebula is an unplayable ship by any means. If you have the patience and don't mind long drawn out fights, and fly it simply for the love of the Nebula class, it's an okay ship.

All I'm saying is a few minor tweaks might make it a better ship.

Well i am slowly closing in on getting it....well i was until i stupidly tied to do the Klingon ground fleet action in Pi Canis. I have been in here since before i made OP and have not manage to get more than half the spotters. Empty fleet actions ftl.

So i just hit Captain last night. I have to say, the T3 looked amazing...but played differently to how i hoped. I felt like i was in command of a brick. So as much as i love the nebula i ditched it and will likely go for the Intrepid refit which is a bit of a shame. Maybe i'll copy my toon to tribble and try the Nebula refit first.

CapnLogan sir...you and your partner in crime (who's name eludes me i apologise) have done amazing work cleaning up the ships and getting the details right. Thankyou!

If only the interiors were half as well done as the exteriors they'd actually be worth using or even visiting...Oh well.
