What the title said. That flashlight was a brilliant piece of work and it would be a shame if it were for one mission only... you need to take that and add it into the regular game. Of course, night doesn't have to be PITCH BLACK like in a space station, but having a light source during the night would still rock.
Ye Ghods, it amazes me the number of a$$-hats on the forum, too. Thanks for the rather unncessary attack because "I failed to use the search engine to find out if someone already asked about the flashlight!!!!" oh noz! You are such a sterling example of a forum poster, man, really - you could have said "its already been posted about, man, Dstalh said this-that-and-this but no, let's get nasty *applaud*
lol
You do realize it's always the second person flaming that gets the Infraction, right?
I like the idea of day and night. However, i would like flashlights to be come standard issue like the tricorder. On the fed side, whenever we scan, we pull out our trusty tricorder and scan. The flashlight should do the same. Automatically appear from our magic toolkit, illuminating the way for each of us. Get rid of the activation, make them standard issue, and make them more reliable. i hate when they go out or you have to reactivate them.
And what part of Dstahl's post onthe matter did you miss, back after the second episode went Live and people were asking about the exact same thing?
Did you miss the part about "the episode was especially designed to minimize use of Dymanic Lighting so that the flashlight could be implemented" and that 'the flashlight would never be a permanent item due to limitations on how many Dymanic Lights the engine could handle"?
If you'd bothered to READ PREVIOUS THREADS on the matter, all would have been revealed and that what you're asking for would require a engine rewrite to handle more dynamic light sources - and they aren't going to do it for one stupid piece of fluff gear? Congratulations, you've just wasted server space on a thread that is essentially pointless. Go you.
Ye Ghods, the inability of people to use Search on the Forums just boggles the mind.
I kept some flashlights on my boffs..i used them on other maps that were a bit darker...the world did not end, the lighting was fine, dunno about re writing the whole engine...if that were true then what lies beneath would have needed a totally different client to run on.
I dunno, I kind of hated that mission. My flashlight was suffering from some kind of malfunction. The actual "ligting" was blinking out, so I was stuck in a dark level with only the little transparent sprite on the wall and no illumination. Add to that the fact that i was getting insta-killed by spawns of super mobs and I ended up really dissappointed with the whole mission.

I think they are worried by the people who have crappy graphics cards... but honestly, anyone with a crappy graphics card should update. It's like some friends of mine who play WoW on some old crappy Macs... I don't know how they do it, and they HATE it but they didn't want to spend money on new computers. But they can't take it any longer and are getting PC's.
So all I know is that the flashlights worked perfectly on my computer
Aslan_chShran there is a lag on the flashlights, like how sometimes the non LOD textures take a few seconds to load in, like Sketch5430 said sometimes my flashlight would fail to light up some parts of the level...
And no i don't have a crappy card, i have a geforce GTX 260 with an intel i7 and i can run most games without the crappy texture lag that STO gets, in fact i can run most games perfectly fine, STO is just running a crappy unoptimised engine... hell i can run mass effect 2 at 1680x1050 with full AA and get smooth frame rates. yet a crappy flashlight in STO bugs out...hhmmm is it my computer or the game... ohh wait its the game !
ohh and im glad the flashlights worked perfectly for you, congrats you are the usual forum poster with the miracle computer that runs every single thing bug free... you should feel special !
And while im posting i don't get why people miss and want the flashlight, the effects on it were not that good, hell even games from over 5 years ago had better flashlight effects !!!
I think the problem mainly lies with ATI users who are still getting the dynamic lighting crash, they had problems with that episode. I don't think they'd enjoy having to wait about for the missions and/or areas to hit day so they can see what's going on without crashing to their desktop.
first .. i really loved the episode "What lies beneath", because of the fact that i really like to explore those rusty old stations, it's a very special atmosphere there, and i liked the flashlight it brought some kind of Doom ³ feeling into the game .. the episode was awesome.
I had not the slightest performance issues with my mediocre PC to run the mission because of the flashlight. My PC is a E8400 / 2 GB ram / MSI 9600gt 1 GB vram / Win XP / 1920x1080 / 4x AA (most of the time sometimes 2x) / 8x AF / Shadows high / Effects medium. I have tweaked some of the graphic options that cost to much FPS like "screen ambient occulsion" and such.
WHAT really was a performance killer ( and i played the mission with several characters ) are some of the devidian blue AE effects or whatever it was.
So i come to an end now .. PLS Turbine make the flashlight a standard item, the OPs idea is really good, BUT pls overwork the particle engine. All in all the engine is reallly good for what is does.

hmmm, ya know, i think a flashlight would be perfect for the mines of Moria! Though you might want to ask turbine on their forums, i'm unsure if anyone there plays STO.

I am 34 years old.
I have played a lot of video games.
Over the years I have grown to hate a number of things that take place in video games.
Day/Night is one of the big ones. Rain falls into that same catagory.
What invariably ends up happening is I end up with a game where it is dark MOST of the time, or raining most of the time as the case may be.
It never works.
Most people wouldn't mind having night time now and then. It always ends up feeling like it's dark all the time.
It's always night time, it's always raining etc.
We already have the cloudiness, the dust/pollen/atmospheric whatever that occludes much of your vision on a lot of planets. Fading in and out, making me strain to see the objectives. Not good.
It's easy enough to go back and get another flashlight (all my crew have them and my away team flicks them on every mission I go on now). Just get someoen to share the mission with you and pass them to your away team.
As to more actual "night" missions, I can live without those. The flashlight dosen'tt work all that well. I wouldn't mind a few missions with the lighting toned down a bit, though (just not pitch black)

Please lets not add to that.
