Would it have killed them to offer different beam variants as a choice? What was the reasoning to forcing it in your forward arc slots? Why not make it unrestricted?

The point of the reward is to take back something that reminds you of the 23rd century. The phaser weapons are slot specific on the TOS Constitution so taking one back with you would also make it slot specific.

The weapon is completely useless compared to the emblem mk XI weapons you can get anyway. Unlike the transphasic cluster mines, this was a huge disappointment. The least they could have done is give it a x3 critical hit chance bonus or something to make it useful.

Yeah when I first saw it I got excited then when I saw its stats I was kinda saddened. Just a little bit let down that they would give us something that is useless to us at VA rank.

Technically it's for all ranks above Lt. Commander and it scales with your rank. But you might as well buy the TOS constitution and use the phasers that come with it on your VA ship to get the same phaser effect. Hell you can keep claiming and trashing the TOS conny to get a full rack of these old school phasers. They're exactly the same.

You guys realise that reward is going to be needed in destroying the commet. To prevent temporal contamination... True story!

As I said in the other thread, not every mission item is useful for every player. How many players found the ally-affecting Cryo-Grenade useful compared to how many didn't? How many found the Tubors useful compared to how many didn't? Some mission items are only beneficial to some players; and, in general, I think we have already gotten 3 very good items out of the Devidian mission. I have no problem with this one not being useful to my VAs.

Just to clarify, I'm not saying "useful" has to mean "UBER" (not sure if that's what you assumed I meant). I found all the weekly episode items until now to be useful to some degree, and one of the things that made then useful was that they were unique. This was just a copy/paste reward that a significant chunk of the playerbase who bought a c-store item can get an unlimited number of.

I personally don't think an item has to be series unique to be included. I think there's a lot of players who don't have the TOS Constitution and will find the phaser useful. Of course if it were me I would have made it an unbound item that could be sold or trades. That way people could buy multiples to fill up their ship rather then having to buy the ship on the c-store.

Also, my own guess is that the special series reward will be a Holo BO; and item that is also already in the game but only available to those who recruited someone to the game. That item is also not series unique but, like the TOS Constitution, something that a large percentage of the fan-based doesn't have.

I wasn't overly thrilled with the reward either, it's neat and all but doesn't compare to my current weapons. I do, however, use it in PVE just because I like the sound effect.

My buddy in Montana just FLIPPED over this weeks reward. I played through it and called him:

"So hey man, do you want to know what the new episode reward is...?"

"Sure, is it some stupid triolic grenade you can aggrivate players with?"

    "Nope..."

    "What is it?"

"Retrofit blue phasers... like the ones I got with my Connie"

    "...Your serious...?"

    "Yep"

"YEEEEEEEEESSSS!!!! I HAVE TO GO HOME AND DO THAT MISSION RIGHT NOW!!!" *Hangs up the phone*

He loves the blue phasers, and is hardly the 'min/maxer' type of player... he plays just for the aesthetic/entertainment value. So the fact that they arent as good as purple gear concerns him VERY little. It's all a matter of perspective... some peeps will ignore this reward... some people will LOVE it!

My fed players wont find this useful... but finally my Klingon Alts can use them if I want!

This might be a little offtopic, but is the TOS constitution still available in the store? I can't find it anywhere

Yeah, it's still on the list on the main website. It costs 800 CPs. It should be on the Ships unlock in the in-game c-store.

Perhaps it's because I'm only a Captain of my ship, but these weapons are currently better for me. Granted, they may not be by the time I reach VA, but that will probably be a while anyway. Like Treagersama's friend, I don't play to min/max. I play to be part of Starfleet with a group of developers that I haven't seen so intermingled with their playerbase since Monolith and The Matrix Online. As long as our developers continue to socialize with the players, and keep bringing out dynamic missions like this (dynamic in the sense that they are not level-specific), I'm going to be a happy Lifer.

My VA will have it equipped on his ship next week, then it will probably go into my bank along with other items like the fire extinguisher and cryo tribble. My lower ranked alts will probably use it until they reach RA.

    You can't please everyone.

TRIBBLE! Pure TRIBBLE, with all due respect to your otherwise well thought out and informed opinions. I also take umbrage with dstahls reasoning. Here's why.

You can't compare this to the Deferi Tubers or the Harmless Cryo grenade - those at least are things that EVERYONE can find some use for, equally. The TOS Connie Forward Arc Phasers do the following:

    1. Unfairly favor people that specced into Phasers - the other gifts are pretty skill-neutral
    2. *sorta* penalizes cannon-based ships (read: Escorts - see number 7.)
    3. reduces the "cool" factor of the peepz that get TOS Connie
    4. Needlessly restricted to the FWD arc in the thoughts that it would somehow re-creat the "feel" of TOS. Please.
    Other nit-picks:

    5. It's an obvious re-gurgitation of a pre-made asset (the blue phasers from the TOS Connie).
    6. At RA, it's the pretty much the same as a Mk X Phaser with the [DMG] modifier. Pretty lame.
    7. Again, needlessly penalizes builds where FWD DPS is the selling point and strength of the build, such as escorts.

I had other nitpicks, but the Vodka is a' flowing. Point is, the other gifts were more 'usage neutral" , where this one is more useful to some than others.

In short, it's just lazy. They used the blue phasers from the Connie and restricted it to the FWD arc. W. T. F.

PS - McCoy? Seriously? It felt like a crappy novelization. No offense, Cryptic.

My point isn't about "pleasing", it's more about the gift isn't player- or usage-neutral.

This. You are correct, everyone who disagrees with this post is wrong, wrong, and wrong. This is a TRIBBLE reward not even worth a space in my bank. Its an uncommon power item. Its useful to no one really, its not like uncommon phasers are expensive. Don't use phasers? worthless. don't use front beams? useless. This reward is truly brainless. Anyone can see that, why argue? It's obvious.

What could possibly be gained from defending something that's so obviously poorly thought out? It's madness! Ever notice that when someone is insane on star Trek they are always sweaty? Only very sweaty people could possibly defend this weeks toy.

Not only all of the above, but the Connie had dual beams, its not even the right weapon.

That said ill enjoy the story and that'll be this weeks reward :) No hard feelings for insane sweaty people :)

It's just like the Transphasic Cluster Torpedo Launcher. The only difference is that you only needed one of those but depending on ship and build a lot more phasers for fore and aft slots.
In short, it's just lazy. They used the blue phasers from the Connie and restricted it to the FWD arc. W. T. F.

I don't think that they restricted it to the forward arc, as far as I heard the aft phaser of the Constitution has a slightly different animation.
PS - McCoy? Seriously? It felt like a crappy novelization. No offense, Cryptic.

Some people are never happy. I thought it was awesome (as soon as I figured out how incredibly easy calibrating the neural stimulator was, I thought that I had to overstimulate so that the average between the actual potential and the one I used would be the one it should be) and damn, I'm a tactical officer, not a doctor. Why can't my hypersmart green-blooded, inhuman science officer do that for me?:D

Where you see lazy I see Cryptic trying to give a special, c-store exclusive, item to some of its fans who didn't/couldn't buy the Collector's Edition and refuse/cant afford to buy from the c-store. To each their own, though.

As I said above, I don't use most of the Deferi equipment. Out of 10 alts only 1 uses the mines (T3 Nebula). None of them uses the ally-freezing grenades, only 1 used the Tubers to make a Cryo-Tribble (and quickly learned I already had tribbles as good or better then it), and most haven't used all of their Cryo-Grenades - I've even unslotted them now on all 10 alts to make room for the Triolic Pattern Stabiizer I got in episode 3. So out of the entire Breen series the only standard reward item I really use is the CRM. I don't think I'm alone in that.
PS - McCoy? Seriously? It felt like a crappy novelization. No offense, Cryptic.
Yeah, how odd that Cryptic would bother to use one of the "Big 3" from TOS. :)

i still haven't used any of my tubers. I will, i mean there are just other things in game i would rather do than breed some rodent. Not that i don't breed the damn things, i just don't race out to do it.

Used they ally grenade thing on my friends once. I'm not a griefer so i'm not just going to run around and throw this stuff at people.

I only put the cluster mine on one of my characters. I like variety, i can't play all my characters the same way.

I loved the cryo grenades, i wish he had we gotten more of them. I have already used them up on most of my characters.

as for the CRM, one of my characters uses it. I put one on my other charcters breen boff to complete the breen look. on my other two characters one of their boffs uses it, i don't like the look of the gun for their styles, one is a pistol user and the other is a batleth user.

as for the breen boff, i only used up one of the 4 i got. I;m waiting to put the other 3 on the exchange later when they are not as common.

i loved the TOS novels, i must have read them all when I was a kid. As for no voice over work from De Kelley, the man is no longer with us. I would rather have silence than an imitator doing his voice. McCoy was always my favourite of TOS due to Kelley's phenomenal work.

I always wondered if that worked with trashing your Constitution and reclaiming it just to get the blue phasers off. Tried it on Tribble before I do it on Holo but didn't work. And I did buy the collectors edition so I don't know if I can reclaim it as much as I want. So holding off on it for now.

I does indeed work, rendering this week's reward worthless to anyone who has the connie.
  • Archived PostArchived Post Member Posts: 2,264,498 Arc User

    Best case scenario:

You never bought the TOS connie, you love the TOS phaser effect, and you're a lower level. You just got an awesome weapon you'll until you hit level 51 and get some purple items.

Worse case: You either had the connie, you're a min-maxer and MUST have purple phasers, or you don't use phasers. all you got was a vanity phaser item with a cool sound effect.

Some people said this was the biggest disappointment in their trek career. To that I say "THBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBPT" and you need to get out more.

Not everything is about you. So you didn't like one specific reward. You still played an AWESOME mission. Better luck next time.

(Note: in my ideal world the reward was a companion torpedo launcher to go with the connie phasers. But this works too. And this extreme over-reaction is frankly... ludicrous. )

I too would have much preferred a ToS photon launcher. Especially if they could make it look like it was chain firing like in the show, but still do the same damage as a normal torpedo volley of course.

Perhaps a new wish list would be in order? :D
