This is a "dramatic" post for me as I am very much against the "NERF NOW (!!!) crowd" so to speak , but it's gotten to the point that I had to say something .
Basically my point is that you (Cryptic) have nerf-ed a power beyond usefulness .
- I can't escape with it when I want/need .
- I can't really "ram" with it -- aka I can't cause phisical damage to an enemy ship with it -- the classic definition of "ramming a ship" .
So really ... why is it still there ?
Please don't give us "pointless" or "it sometimes works" powers that are just too random to make use of .
Give us something usefull ... , like :
Antimatter spread
Shield Nutation (a way varying the shield frequency phase rotation)
Orrrr something else .

Right now , Ramming Speed is just takeing up space ... , even more so than Abandon Ship .

And yeah, Ramming Speed is just another evasive maneuver at this point, used to run from battle. It is very rarely used to ram any more. Just cut it, and give us the button space back...and for the love of cheese, please stop things from reappearing on the power trays when we remove them.
My stance on Ramming Speed is that it ought to be removed and replaced. The concept doesn't have to go away: I think the game could really use the implementation of collision damage so to have people develop more respect for their surroundings. It worked in Bridge Commander and I don't see why it wouldn't in STO - that way, people can just ram in other ships by flying into them (something that, if collisions were on, people would be leery of and actively try to avoid). Seeing how death is rather trivial, collisions in themselves wouldn't really impede the game's fun factor (as some early Dev comment on why collisions were pulled out indicated).
Ramming speed works the way it's intended to now, as a last ditch effort to win .... or run
I could not possibly agree more with this. I am sick of seeing powers re-appear. And it always seems to be BO abilities that show up. I already have my BO tray, why would I want them in my ability tray?
And to be somewhat on topic to the OP, I have never been able to use Ramming speed effectivly to my atvantage. So I agree, lets get something usefull in its place.
I really wish they WOULD add collision damage to this game. It would add a depth and prevent those annoying 'hull hugging' tactics that BoPs try to use. Balance, playability, canon, complete idiocy... what have you. It doesn't matter... if you fly full speed at another ship, you shouldn't just press ever so lovingly against them... you should explode, or they should... or possibly both. LOL
Please give us back the old ramming speed, where captains are free to dictate when to ram and not be hampered by the shackles of low hull strength.
Also, please give Klingons the ability to ram while cloaked.
I have been a good little Klingon boy this year, so please -just once- give me my toys
PS: I still remember that plastic batleth you gave me last year; your elves apparently had the work contracted out to China, and it broke after using it to stab a Romulan.
It should stay but it has nothing to do with ramming anymore thats true.Should be renamed to 'Running Speed'.:)
This should enable escorts to get out of the way before the less nimble cruisers run them over most of the time. Those that still get hit deserve it. At the same time, a ship using Ramming Speed looses power from other systems, providing a minor disincentive to use it "prematurely".
Additionally, I'm in favor of removing the even crazier speed boost from Evasive Maneuvers. The way this skill works and is used right now has nothing in common with what the name implies. Instead, Evasive Maneuvers should distribute power between Shields and Engines, giving a slight boost to speed, turn rate and an additional moderate boost to defense, perhaps coupled with an automatic "shaking" animation for the ship - similar to the "Erratic Maneuvers" the ships in the Starfleet Command games were able to use.
Better yet would be to turn Evasive Maneuvers into a "barrel roll" animation, not changing speed and turn rate at all, but just coupling a defense bonus with a special move. This would be a little more difficult to implement, of course.
Anyways, I'm tired of ships FTL'ing out of range, and I don't like that I am tempted to do likewise.
