My BOs are suicidal

It was a tough fight, but my ship and crew performed excellently. The klingon battleship outgunned us 2 to one, but with the proper tactics and a little luck we had disabled their port shields.

"We've got them now, helm! Hold your course!" I ordered. "Weapons...fire on my command!"

"But Captain," the 1st officer said, "We're pretty close to them!"

"If we give them a chance to turn away we'll lose their exposed side! Our shields are almost gone...we can't survive another barrage from their main guns, number one.....Execute!"

Hot phaser death with a garnish of quantum torpedoes spilled from my starship, and within seconds the Klingon crew was on their way to Sto-Vo-Kor. We won! the system we were patrolling was safe and after some repairs, my ship, the USS Notre Dame, would be as good as new. Except it was then that the 1st officer said

"Captain, we have an incoming message from command...."

"Very good, number one...um...why did you stop the ship?"

"Would you like me to put it on screen?"

"Sure...just MOVE the ship!"

"It could be important...."

"Great, number one...now MOVE THE SHIP! We're sitting on top of a klingon battlecruiser thats about to EXPLODE! Move the ******n ship!"

(Klingon cruiser's core goes critical, blowing both ships to atoms)

ME: "Activate the Omega 13."

I'm joshing of course, but this happened to me three times yesterday. My BOs would stop to give me some dialogue after a battle, but being too close to the defeated ship the explosion killed me as well. Its kinda annoying, but I wouldn't want it changed. It'll just teach me to fight smarter. ;)

And Q looked upon the whole situation and laughed, knowing he did well in hiding the button in the options that can keep ships going when a dialogue box opens.

    :p

I didn't know there was such a button. I'll have to look for it. But as I said, it keeps me on my toes.

yeah as i said it's nicely hidden in there somewhere. ahh, i still remember the *tap* *tap* *tap* of my keyboards' w key whenever a dialogue box would popup.

    Fun read by the way!

Weird, I've never seen dialogue boxes open until after my ship stood down from Red Alert, always giving me the opportunity to get away from explosions first.

Its a new thing to me. I remember blasting through enemies and watching my ship glide through the flames to a relatively safe distance before the big explosion. But recently its been that the dialogue box pops up and the ship stops smack on top of the soon to be blowing up ship. I've missed a few dialogue boxes by trying to tap my way through it so I can get away. I was inspired to post this thread from when it happened last night. My ship was almost gone, I had virtually no shields, and the ship's health was like 18 percent or something. I had to fire on the enemy before they could hit me again or it would have been all over.

When I defeated them I imagined my entire bridge crew shouting "HOORAY! We did it! We're alive! ALIVE!!"....

and then the box popped up and the ship stiopped and I imagined me leaping out of the captain's seat and hitting buttons on the helm screaming "Move the ship! Move the ship!". :)

We've been complaining about this from the beginning. We really don't need constant popups and confirmation dialogs for everything.

If I want to beam up, I'll TELL you. If an officer in the Navy was constantly badgering the Captain, asking if he wants to do this or that now, he'd be forever scrubbing the head. Same thing if the Captain had to repeat an order three times.

    Warp to the Volanis Cluster.

    Are you sure?

Um, just follow the damn order, Lieutenant.

Well, my BOs commit suicide in some creative ways other than the stop the ship to tell me the painfully obvious....

My science officer is either a TRIBBLE, stupidly homicidal or perhaps suicidal. I've noticed that he loves to charge into ground combat before I'm even in range!

Case in point: We're trying to eliminate the romulans on a space station mission. We just finished a long and tiring phaser fight in the hall and about to enter a large room. I'm trying to get in place to lob a photon grenade at the biggest cluster of enemies and the other BOs are right behind me. Science officer Torkas decides to sprint into the center of the room, and AGGRO every romulan in the sector!I faceplanted right after he did, but after being revived we won, but he did it a few other times. I imagine it went like this

ME: Ok, Tania, you and Bryant get ready to fire on my target when I give the go.....we don't know how many romulans are in there, so Jir, prepare a phaser turret....Torkas, I want you....Torkas? Where'd he go?"

    TORKAS: "LEEEEEEEROOOOY JENKINS!"

    ME: Oh, TRIBBLE.

Funny thing is, he's a vulcan!

Your situation is why I implement my throw them outa the airlock rule o.O

But yeah I'm forever having to quickly put the speed back up or closing the text box quickly so I can get away.

Another annoying thing is when they talk to you, and you start to get attacked as the enemies spawn and attack you while your reading.

For some reason, my BOs like to play in burning plasma from plasma grenades. Once of my tactical BOs threw the grenade at a target and then ran up to the target to hit him with the stock of her rifle. Meanwhile, I'm thinking, why couldn't you have used the other end of the rifle to shoot him from a safe distance? None of them even have melee skills.

You can go to options and turn that annoying feature off, so when a dialog box opens, you keep on moving.

In options click the control tab and then you would check keep moving on dialog. You will have to do it on both ground and space. They also added a check box that is suppose to stop the reminders popping up in game play. I don't know if it works now or not.

The way I thought is was suppose to work is it wouldn't remind you the next wave of ships is coming in and pop up the dialog when in combat.

My bridge officers are also suicidal. My main characters are tactical and when I through a plasma grenade. My bridge officers will rush forward forcing the NPC's out of the area of the grenade. Then a couple of them will stand in the AOE fire. Or they will just run through my plasma fires often but the enemy NPC's wont run trough them.

My Bo's love jumping into the Bajoran Fire Pits. You know the very deep ones you can't rez them out of!
You gotta suicide dive into them so you can all be respawned. So stupid.

I feel your pain, and yes there is an option to turn that off so that you keep moving when it shows up.

Sometimes my Boffs also have their priorities mixed up. Here is an excerpt from a log aboard USS Johnston on a recent support mission to Starbase 24:

*Ship is at red alert. Bridge staff of USS Johnston are jolted violently from multiple direct hits. EPS power relays explode everywhere, smoke fills the compartment. Captain Sharp is bleeding from a cut to her forehead*

Commander Lahal: Captain, that last blast knocked out our forward shield, and structural integrity is down to 57%!

Captain Sharp: Reroute power to forward shields, and hazard systems! Come to course 114 mark 105! Mr. Falor, direct all polaron beam fire at that Negh'var, and prepare to fire a high-energy torpedo salvo on my mark!

*ship rocks again* *more consoles explode, and junior officers are knocked off their feet. Captain Sharp is also thrown from her chair*

Commander Lahal: Captain, we're losing starboard shields!

*Ship comes about and faces target. More conduits explode from a direct hit. Captain Sharp picks herself off the deck. There is now an aft console on fire.*

Lieuenant Falor: Sir, target's aft shields are down, and their structural integrity is at critical! High-energy torpedo salvo is ready!

    Captain Sharp: Now, Mr. Falor!

Lieutenant Falor: Sir, we are now in transporter range of Starbase 24.

    *Ship rocks again*

Captain Sharp: That's nice, Lieutenant, but now is not the time! Fire those torpedoes!

Lieutenant Falor: But, the staff on the base needs us.

    *Ship takes another direct hit*

Commander Lahal: Sir, our forward shields are down, and emergency power relays are offline! Structural integrity is down to 35%, one more hit and we're done for!

Captain Sharp: Mr. Falor, this ship needs those torpedoes, or we're dead!

Lieutenant Falor: Captain, are you sure you don't want to beam to the starbase? I've prepared an away team.

Captain Sharp: For the love of... *goes to tactical console and relieves Falor. Fires torpedoes herself and watches Negh'var explode*

Commander Soral: Captain, the Klingon ships are retreating.

    From: Captain Kim Sharp
To: Lieutenant Commander Nathan A. Peel

    Lieutenant Commander,

Thank you for your message. I would be happy to take you up on the drink offer.

As to Lieutenant Falor's conduct, I do not blame that on people such as yourself. I can commend Lieutenant Falor's desire to assist the crew on the station, and I have since spoken to him about the incident and why he was relieved. I think he understands.

I can understand younger officers being a little over-zealous. My XO still likes to charge Klingon Swordmasters as though he is invincible. It's quite a sight to see a Vulcan going medieval and beating some unsuspecting Klingon senselessly. It's also a little scary for me seeing as he often accompanies my Away Teams in a medical capacity, but I can't recall the last time they ever got him. I was a young officer myself, once, and I can remember doing some crazy things in the field that I wouldn't dare do now.

Any rate, I look forward to the discussion.

Fair wind and following seas, Lieutenant Commander.

    Sincerely,

    Captain Kimberly A. Sharp
    Commanding Officer
    USS Johnston

That's something I noticed too, and I tracked it to his melee range abilities, like Sonic Pulse. If you disable his use of that ability (or give him something else), he should stop doing that. As long as a BO has a melee ability, he'll insist on using it, which means charging into melee.

Interesting, Soral's abilities are largely medical related. I think he has only one offensive ground sci ability, but it's something that doesn't require him to be close. I'll have to look at his skillset again.

I think his thing is that it's connected to one of his ground combat passives, which is melee-specific. I don't know how to stop him charging into danger like that without setting him a rally point.

When not set on rally, though, I have watched him literally charge like a madman into a crowd of Swordmasters and start wailing on them with a phaser rifle, and then shooting them in the face.

The first time he did it I went  and then :D Oh, and that first time, after he was done savagely bludgeoning the Klingons, he turned around and healed me and one of my engineers.

Rarely does he die, though. It's quite amazing.

Perhaps. I've also suspected he might be a Romulan in disguise. Earlier in Kim's 25th century career, on an Away Mission in Regulus, he kicked her and shoved her into a tree. Kim had to have him confined to the brig, and asked her tactical officer to beam down with her instead to finish the mission. Quite startling.

She had to release him, however, because at the time she did not have another medical officer and needed one. His exceptional conduct during that mission caused her to drop the court martial charges, but he did get a reprimand in his record and a temporary reassignment.

Since, though, he's become invaluable, and Kim recently promoted him to XO. That same aggression with the Klingons in hand-to-hand, also reflects in his hull-crushing tractor beam abilities. If you ask her about the incident on that away mission now, she laughs about it.

That would be kind of cool. I can imagine my character having this conversation:

CAPTAIN PEEL: Lt. Torkas, I've been going over your service record and theres a problem.
TORKAS: What type of problem, Captain?
CAPTAIN PEEL: Well, it says here that you graduated basic phaser marksmanship with flying colors, but it doesn't list your Advanced Hand-To-Hand Combat course.
TORKAS: Naturally, sir....I never took the Advanced Course in hand to hand combat. I am a Doctor.
CAPTAIN PEEL: Then why in the name of James T. Kirk do you keep running up to your enemies and trying to hit them with your rifle? Its a phaser rifle....you could just shoot them!
TORKAS: With all due respect, sir, I did shoot my last opponent.
CAPTAIN PEEL: Yeah...after you ran right through a plasma fire to hit him with the rifle....and you shot him in the face, for pity's sake!
TORKAS: It was the logical thing to do.
CAPTAIN PEEL: *sigh* Torkas, I know you're a vulcan, but how is that logical?
TORKAS: It was the last thing the klingon warrior expected, thus catching him completely by surprise.

CAPTAIN PEEL: He didn't look surprised when he busted your dome with his bat'leth....besides...isn't shooting someone in the face a little over the top violent for a vulcan doctor?
TORKAS: If I recall correctly, you vaporized him, sir.
CAPTAIN PEEL: That was a mistake! My finger slipped! besides, he was about to shish-kebab you....
TORKAS: "Shish-Kebab"? I am not familiar with that term.
HELM OFFICER: Captain, we've been drawn into a Deep Space encounter with ....oh my God...there are four Romulan Birds of Prey dead ahead...and a D' Derix Class Warbird! Captain, they've locked onto us!
    They're charging weapons!

CAPTAIN PEEL: Red Alert! Raise shields! Mr. Inod, get us out of here! Maximum Warp!
*****(several seconds pass, enemy ships open fire)

CAPTAIN PEEL: Why aren't we moving?
(Unnamed Ferengi appears on main viewscreen): Would you like to exit to sector space?
    CAPTAIN PEEL: Oh, TRIBBLE.

    (lol)

As I can imagine Kim having this one:

CAPTAIN SHARP: (smiling at new Vulcan tactical officer) Congratulations, Ensign. You will make a fine addition to the crew.
    ENSIGN SEVAK: Thank you, Captain.
COMMANDER SORAL: Captain, sensors are picking up a Starfleet vessel currently being attacked by several Romulan warships. The ship appears to be having a malfunction with their warp drive, and is taking heavy damage.
CAPTAIN SHARP: Red Alert. Change course to intercept, maximum speed! Ensign, target the closest vessel and prepare to fire.
ENSIGN SEVAK: Aye, Sir. Targetting vessel. Range 35 kilometers and closing.
CAPTAIN SHARP: (Raises brows) Ensign, the closest vessel. The one 12 kilometers away and will be within weapons range in 10 seconds.
ENSIGN SEVAK: My apologies, Sir. New target, 18 kilometers away.
CAPTAIN SHARP: Commander Soral, what is going on with our targeting sensors?
COMMANDER SORAL: Targeting sensors working normally, Captain.
CAPTAIN SHARP: Lieutenant Falor, can you tak--
(USS Johnston shakes violently with a direct hit)
ENSIGN SEVAK: Captain, we are being attacked by a Mogai class Romulan warbird. Target is 8 kilometers and closing!
CAPTAIN SHARP: Well, shoot back at it, Ensign!
ENSIGN SEVAK: Aye, Captain. Targeting D'deridex class battleship, opening fire.
    CAPTAIN SHARP: (Facepalm)
    (Nothing happens)
CAPTAIN SHARP: Ensign Sevak, what in the name of Surak is going on over there?
(USS JOHNSTON rocks violently. Consoles explode)
ENSIGN SEVAK: (Frowning) Captain, my tactical controls are malfunctioning. Nothing will fire.
(USS Johnston takes on more damage)
COMMANDER LAHAL: Captain, our shields are weakening. We have hull breeches on decks 3 and 6.
CAPTAIN SHARP: Emergency power to shields. Falor, get us out of here!
LIEUTENANT FALOR: My controls aren't responding either, Sir.
CAPTAIN SHARP: (Tries controls from another station. They don't work) Commander Lahal?
COMMANDER SORAL: Captain... (Points at communications log containing: USS JOHNSTON: 1212212121333eeeee)
    CAPTAIN SHARP: ARGH!

Check to see if he has the Neck Pinch. It's a racial melee attack.
As another aside, with skills you can disable them so he won't use them. Not so with the Neck Pinch. If he has it he WILL use it and you can't tell him not to.

He does have that. That's why I figured it was a passive. Luckily, though, he doesn't die very often lol
