First Day Impressions

Picked up this game yesterday, i had another thread about the fact that after 3-4hours of patching the servers went down and i couldnt play till today lol ANYWAY

Made my character, was pleasantly surprised to be thrown into the action straight away, i know alot off mmo gamers complain about instancing but i love having a story and something to accomplish.

Space combat seems pretty fun trying to control your defense while at the same time putting up an offense.

Missions seemed in good order and helped me progress through the first few levels without much delay. I completed a repeatable quest afew times, theres some klingon ships flying around in the map that you can repeat?

First fleet action was crazy! There were like 20 fedartion ships vs an army of klingons .I was involved in the first stage but as soon as the battleships came out i got my a$$ handed to me so i went and completed the interior, took many tries until i finally got someone my level to come in with me =))

Sofar so good, then what i had been waiting for, i hit level 6 and unlocked klingon, what the TRIBBLE up with that anyway.

Quickly logged off my federation character, made my klingon and logged in.

From the very first second i had a graphical glitch where everything seemed to be faintly flickering, no biggy it went away. I picked up a quest to give me my bridge crew, fight to prove myself? AWESOME!

So i quickly got into that, first i picked to fight had some gun that would just stun me for like 5 seconds while he blasts me from a far, he repeated that every time i got out of the stun so that fight took like 10 minutes as i was stunned non stop lol, wow that annoyed me.

After i finished that mission, did afew small ones to get my complete bridge team I went to pick up some missions to go out into space, some how i only managed to get PVP missions? Something about ground house??? I didnt even know there were pvp arenas till i got one of those quests and looked around through the UI, queued for like 10 minutes and not enough federation were joining which was weird because there were 100x more federation players from what i saw lol.

Anyway, get into space and realise there arent many klingon players, i talk in zone chat and the only one to reply tells me how mythic killed klingon at launch and continue to do so now. I ignored him and persisted!

Since my only missions i had were PVP ones and none of those arenas were popping i decided to fly around, found a planet that had Arena as part of its name so i went in, got smashed by some borg cubes.

Left that world and found some fleet action systems, as i flew closer the name of the system would disappear and i wouldnt get a prompt to go in, happend to 3 different fleet actions i found.

So from what i saw of the klingons

1. hardly any players
2. ****** quest progression
3. Fleet action didnt seem to work?
4. Buggier/glitchier

How is the game so different on Klingon than on federation? Am i missing something? I dont wanna quit on my first day lol

Right click on the top border of your chat window. Select chat options in the window that pops up. In channels type KDFassistance in and click join. Traffic has died down a little but there is usually someone on that can and will give you advice. You will have to switch to the channel in the chat box. Click on where it says Zone or Local in the lower left of the chat client and a pop up will allow you to select the KDFassistance channel so that your chat can be seen by others on that channel.

PvP Queues take a long time to give you a match, but are far easier to access from the mini-map UI, (the little inverted triangle in the lower right border of the map). I believe some of the PvP "worlds" are level blocked but I never use them so I cannot say for sure. Anywho the mini-map UI drop down is easier to use and accomplishes the exact same thing.

Because the PvP takes so long to cycle a match around many players will "explore grind" while they wait for a PvP match. Again in the Mini-map UI, lower left hand side you will see a Klingon Empire symbol. Click on that and an interface will pop up. I can't remember the name of the Explore contact but one of the officers in that window will give you the option to explore some nebula. This will give you experience and explore badges so you can buy stuff off the explore vendors in the shipyard on Qo'nos. Hit M to call up the full sized map then you can hit the systems list then double click the nebula's name from that list to auto pilot there.

I hope this will ease your start. Stick with it. Playing KDF is a challenge, but it gets better every update. Oh and be sure to cross the border into Eta Eridani. When you finish the load screen look to the lower right of the screen and click on the contact, (I don't remember his name). This will open the new Devidian quests for you. Right now there are only three but a new one will be added this Saturday.

    Qapla!

Stick with it, the klingon side is fun once you get the hang of it, PvP I never do it, I just do explore missions and defend missions and have got two chars up to the higher levels, the Klingon ships are the best in the game IMO , try and join a fleet it enhances the whole experience.

Oh and welcome to the STO universe.

    Welcome to STO :D

As a mainly Fed player myself, I can understand the culture shock you got, when you switched to playing a Klingon and found there's not a great deal of PVE content.

Like buzz999, I have mainly leveled my KDF Captains through the Exploration and Defend the Empire missions.

However, there are some great PVE missions that become available to you as you level (some of the best in the game, in my opinion), plus the Breen and Devidian weekly missions.

As for the maintenance downtime, don't worry they're not every day. You've just been really unlucky that they had 2 in the first 2 days of your gameplay.

I hope you decide to stick around, it's a fun game (when you actually get the chance to log in and play ;))

this...right here is a perfect example of how bad the ucg is needed on the klingon end of things, the jumbled starting experience for anyone just rolling a klingon after the initial batleth tournament and then the fairly weak direction after just ends up killing it, the worst part is having to get to level 10, to get the first pve mission that might ease the experience a bit.

Klingons need to start at level 10 right off the bat, and I swear the first UCG mission I make is going to be called "welcome to the empire" and fill in the large gaps for new Klingons.

Just like in most games, zone chat is usually ignored by most players, as it is limited to a single zone/instance (once you travel elsewhere you're out of any discussion, limiting the interest of joining one in the first place) and the topics are usually rather ... bland. The only time I ever use zone chat is for the obligatory compliments after a good PvP match.

Take your time and look around for more appropriate and persistant chat channels, like the already-mentioned "KDFassistance". If you're a roleplayer, join "STORP" as well.

Yes, there are fewer Klingon players than Federation ones, but in my experience they work together more. Also, be sure to check for alternate instances if you feel isolated - it's quite possible that you're the only player in, say, "Qo'noS #12", whilst on "Qo'noS #1" there are 35.

    Welcome to the game. Qapla'!

Klingon's are a PvP faction in all respect. It's the fastest way to get leveled on a Klingon. They did add some PvE content to the Klingon's but it's not nearly enough to level from. It takes a little bit of time, and patience to level a Klingon so as long as you keep with it, you should be ok. You can also do some of the weekly missions that come out to help progress though the levels.

The Federation side has more players, and is almost all PvE driven, even though you can PvP, most of your leveling will happen by PvE missions. Personally I'd suggest level up your Federation toon before getting too involved in the Klingon, so you can better understand the game mechanics and work though some of the odd issues with the Klingon faction. Not to say you shouldn't play your Klingon, but focus more on the Federation toon until you get a better feel for the game. The experience will help you in the long run. There is also a channel you can join called KDFAssistance for help on the Klingon side.

Playing KDF can be very monotinous. But the devs have consistantly added content to the Klingons since launch.

There are things that Klingons can do.

The Featured Episodes are available to both factions and are will adjust to match your level. The first series has the Breen and the current 2nd series has the devideans. The series' have rewards that progress as you level and are pretty cool.

There is also a 8 (is it eight?) episode arc that is for KDF only as part of the Ancient Enemies patch. Its got a great story and great visuals. I'm not sure what levels they become available at (my toon was pretty high level when they came out) but keep an eye out for them.

The rest of your time will probably be spent doing exploration grinding while waiting for PVP (if you want to pvp).

I for one will be making KDF story content when the UGC Foundry comes out and that should be out before the end of the year.

    Roleplaying, for example. :p

But yes, PvP and Exploration are currently the main activities once you're through with the weeklies and the (few but epic) story missions.

There is a 2 hour scheduled update time every Thursday at 3am pacific.

The extended downtime maintenance this week was the first time we've had a lengthy downtime in the last several months and something that happens across the server farm to keep security updates applied to all the machines (something out of my direct control).

We will also make a call on whether to take downtime for a bug if it is considered to be a big problem.

I imagine that many customers will take umbrage with the statement above. Perhaps you meant scheduled downtime? The frequency of unscheduled downtime is much higher, but not all unscheduled outages affect all services (i.e. dynamic patch system outages).
