1 month till Season 3: when will we TEST?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
According to the Devs Season 3 will go live on Dec 2nd. Thats a month from yesterday. So when will Season 3 be added to Tribble for testing? Please dont wait much longer or people wont be able to thoroughly test it before the scheduled release date, which will mean either it gets pushed back yet again or it will launch buggy. Testing needs to start NOW.

Thanks for the reminder, I'm sure they forgot all about that. Even after Dstahl and stormmy have both address this question in the past week or two as to when testing will begin. Cheers *tips hat*.

You mean like how Season 2 was rushed out the door full of bugs? Yeah, I think they need all the reminders they can get ;)

Good lord man! You're taking a sarcastic potshot at Stephen Colbert! See the irony here btw? And yeah, I don't think the devs forgot about that pretty date they set for Season 3. I kinda expect that Season 3 will be in line like Season 1... in other words it will be a lot of talk but very little content wise but we'll see. UGC sounds promising and I suppose they're internally testing it right now.

Besides, waiting a few more weeks longer for a solid patch beats having an unfinished patch (like Season 1).

Season 3 is already being tested for bugs as the bulk of it is the Foundry.

Actually, that was the entire reason for that post. I couldn't resist. I have the will power of a hormone driven teenager in the redlight district.

Considering I can't even play the game right now because of not being able to connect I think season 3 needs to be pushed back a lot longer.

Oh you mean by a handful of closed beta testers? Yeah, thats going to accomplish alot. The Tribble server exists for a reason, and thats so that the actual community can get things tested before they go live. Since we now have less than a month until the launch date, it needs to be tested on Tribble ASAP.

Sorry for your problem, but its definitely on your end considering almost everyone else CAN connect. If it were a problem on Cryptic's end it would affect everyone.

They are doing it closed beta to squish all the big bugs, then moving it to tribble for the masses. I know what you are saying though, im salivating like no ones business.

Supposedly theyve been doing friends and family testing for a while now, before closed beta even started. If there are still "big bugs" at this point then we're all screwed. But that doesnt change the fact that less than a month from going live a Season should be on Tribble for public testing, regardless of what testing it has had before.

Not always true. There may be a legit problem that affects an extreme minority. Just in case lets show compassion for the poor soul that can't leer at holo leeta.

Also, I think they're getting smarter about sitting on stuff. We've seen a fair number of costumes and assets. Some have been pushed live to the NPCs. We've seen the basic assets for revised sector space in the Deferi area.

But they're holding off on releasing that stuff everywhere until S3, I suspect, so that they have SOMETHING to launch S3 with, even if everything else gets delayed or stuck in testing.

Some of this could go live NOW but they're saving it up for a big update.

    To clarify:
The Foundry isn't necessarily being released at the same time as Season 3. Everyone seems to be forgetting that the two aren't guaranteed to land at the same time. The devs have said for some time that Foundry would still be in BETA for Season 3.

Season 3 will most likely hit Tribble in the next couple weeks (and this is a guess based on past Seasons)

As for the Foundry, if I could talk about the bugs, you'd know why they can't be pushed to the Tribble Test Server right now. The bugs are few but the ones there are quite damaging. Some features that the Team has listed as absolutely necessary for release of the Foundry are still being worked on.

Tribble exists to test build candidates for the live server. It is not nearly as experimental as the stuff that can be put on RedShirt.

The build being tested in the close beta is not a final build candidate for the live server - due to bugs and tons of features being missing that the team absolutely wants in before release. Features are constantly changing and we've had to create entirely new characters just to test the Foundry (and had to delete characters due to bugs).

The devs have a few features they merely want to develop before pushing anything to Tribble. Even those of us on RedShirt haven't seen these new features. These things need to get fixed before marking it as a build candidate and pushing it to Tribble (where it will under-go even more testing but this time focusing on stress testing, rather then testing features as-they-release).

We'll know for certain what's going up there tomorrow, I reckon. Traditionally, Tribble builds have gone up near the weekend. Whether this week will have a big release or not is, of course, open to question.

At the very least, the new Klingon ships need to be Tribble-tested - unless they're gonna be postponed from the C-Store again.

Perhaps not, but the Foundry IS described as the main focus of Season 3:

From the most recent Ask Cryptic:

Q: gx4th: Season 3 is scheduled to be released, is there something for us pvpers to look forward to? Any new maps for ground and space, any new game types, etc?

A: We have no official PVP updates planned for Season 3 as we are primarily focused on the Foundry.

The devs have also stated that the Foundry may still be in beta at Season 3's release (whether that means Live Server or Tribble - who knows?).

Features are still being added to the tools and they want the first Public Testing to be a bang (not a whimper). The tools are still polishing and new components are being added. Even the devs are suggesting new features over on RedShirt.

it's very exciting but I can understand why the company is wanting to wait and hold back public testing until there's more polish and essential features are added.

Theres no denying that. However, in response to your earlier statement about the Foundry not necessarily being connected to Season 3, the Devs comments seem to contradict that.
It's being developed as a part of Season 3 - there's no doubt there but they onyl guaranteed that it would be in Beta-stages for Season 3.

They're literally adding new features (some minor and some major). It's not as James T. Picard's wild speculation suggests - he clearly doesn't have the facts before him.

For example, the devs are also documenting how to create missions and recording tutorials for it (because the tools are that deep). The UI just changed with the build that closed beta testers are using (meaning the tutorials need to be re-done). New features are still incoming and nothing currently there on RedShirt represents the finished product.

Some other parts of Season 3 are still being added. They don't take eons to do or risk causing bugs but those elements still need to get done.

With Closed Beta and the NDA, they can manage how much information gets out (because it's all subject to change). it's a smart move considering how much is being changed with the tools (and how many other things are being worked on for Season 3).

Anything put on Tribble they want people to have a fairly clear idea of what Season 3 actually is.
Does mentioning the name of the Closed Beta server contravene NDA?
It's been mentioned outside of Closed Beta before - when question come up about how the devs test things internally. RedShirt is pretty much an internal test server where things are literally being changed each day.

As for what I can say with the NDA (or not):
I can't talk about the specific features of the toolset or post screens (big no-no)
I can't talk about any of the other features for Season 3 (there are quite a few besides the Foundry)
I can mention the general progress but not specific bugs (as they don't represent the finished product).

What is being tested is not the finished product - it's not even what the company wants out there publicly to be scrutinized. Those people chosen for the beta test have been active on Tribble - they've demonstrated that they know things change.

Nothing is final yet. When it gets closer to finalization, the Foundry will probably move forward (but this is entirely up to the capable hands of the devs).

remember they dont consider season 3 to be december 2nd launch date only, but everything from december 2nd that leads up to season 4.

so yes it probably wont launch on december 2nd as live, but it is still the main focus. which is why there is a closed beta now and the open beta in a couple of weeks or so.

Not necessarily, I had always thought that the "seasons" were just a catch phrase for several months of developer focus based around a few concepts. The weekly episodes were billed as a large part of season 2 , but we didnt see them untill a month or so into season 2.

I wouldn't be surprised at a similar delay with the Foundary tools, and if that means its released will more features and less bugs then so be it.

    Edit: beaten to the punch

I doubt it. Although, talking about the seriousness of the bugs preventing it from going on Tribble would seem to, even without going into the specifics of what they are.

Your quote only says that they will not be doin any pvp for season 3, because they are working of the foundry not that the foundry will be released in season 3. you are adding things to that sry.

It's a beta - everyone knows there are bugs. That's why it's a private testing. Public testing should means critical bugs are gone and final features are added. There's still testing but a Tribble Build generally isn't getting a feature that hasn't been tested internally yet.

Remember Season 2's build had critical bugs that delayed a Tribble release? We were all frothing at the mouth but had to wait until the bugs deemed critical by Q/A were fixed.

As for the Foundry, new features are still being added and what's testing now isn't the final product. This should be a common deduction based on past practices.

Actually no it's not on my end. My fed char map moved and got disconnecting and ever since cannot connect, but my klink worked for another day until I moved to another zone while my fed would not log on. Now both wont work after I tried fresh reinstall. Sound like a problem on my end still?

How has the general progress been over the past week? Regular? Productive? Has feedback beyond show-stopper bug reports been listened to and acted on?
