Well, "genius" it depends on what card you're using, how much memory you have, and about a dozen other things. That's why they have a tech/bug forum for those who aren't tech savy. I can tell you my specs: 2.4 gig dual core, 3 of ram, 9800 card. I run at full settings.
Since you're the first person to say they had a crash problem in 7 hours it's clear the problem's on your side, not the game's.
Was stable enough for me. I have not crashed in awhile and hardly have a high end system. If it were a game issue, the forums would be swamped with posts complaining of crashes.
It is the ATI card... kill dynamic lighting and you will be fine.
Pretty much this, its been an issue since closed beta really popping up to varying degrees. If just turning it down dosen't work turn it off, if you still have problems turn anti-aliasing off since thats been known to cause problems with ati cards too. should you still be crashing after that, then you probably need to get your system stable first because its unlikely to be a problem with the game.
Check the tech forum, there was a fix for Radeon card issues there somewhere.
P.s. Next time, Buy NVidia.
Rather than getting into an E-peen waving contest about which card/company is better, all I'm going to say is that the two companies often swap places when it comes to "the most powerful, compatible and stable graphics card manufacturer". There was a time that I would have sworn by ATI as being the best while Nvidia cards were flaky and prone to incompatibilities with "Modern" games. Right now, Nvidia may be the "good" company, but I totally expect ATI to take that position again at some point in the future.
Simple version,do your research and buy whichever manufacturer the majority of actual critics currently say is the most compatible and stable, not what the fanboys recommend.

For the record, I'm currently on an Nvidia card
Both cards are good. Unfortunately, my experience has been that Radeon cards seem to have more driver issues. That is why I switched from being a Radeon fanboy (and yes, I was a rabid fanboy) to preferring N'Vidia now, though not a fanboy of NVidia, i'd personally rather run ATI but.... I've consistently had fewer problems with NVidia than I had with radeon cards.
Both cards are good, but I just don't think ATI Radeon is quite as interested in building for the gaming community as NVidia is, and it generally shows.
Killing dynamic lighting did the trick. I don't understand why the card can't handle it.
Ah, I was about to suggest this. Yes, I've encountered the same problem. Fortunately, it's minor. It became an issue for me during the Breen series but, ever since I've disengaged dynamic lighting, I've had no further problems with it. Hopefully, this will be the end of your troubles as well.
They didn't crash the damn game every time I enter combat.
Cryptic, can you not make a game that's stable enough to play?
Heres a little hint regarding most games: if the problem is really with the game, then virtually everyone will have it. If most people dont, then its likely an issue on your end.

Is there such a big market for commercially used high-end graphics card? I always thought most of the 3D graphic stuff is really aimed at gaming and less at anything else!
Dyanmic lighting ON and ATI graphics card = STO crash.
Turning it off prevents the crashing, but it also stops the flashlight working in the What Lies Beneath mission. I had to turn on dynamic lighting again to get the spooky flashlight atmosphere.
After crashing 20 times, I decided enough was enough so I'm sending Cryptic a crash dump.
It's attached to bug ticket ID 11794329
If anyone else experiences a crash with dynamic lighting turned on and an ATI card, when the error message box pops up and says "GameClient.exe has stopped working" don't close the program. Go to the Star Trek Online game folder in your program files and launch the CrypticError program and send them a crash dump.
I hope this gets fixed either by Cryptic or ATI (I don't care which). Change the way the lighting works or get ATI a copy of STO and tell them to play against some Devidians.
Thanks for the tip of turning off Dynamic Lighting - I was getting a lot of crashing going on too. I hope this issue can be resolved, there really is no excuse (whether it's Ati's fault or Cryptic) for having a huge section of the playerbase be unable to use Dynamic Lighting purely because of their video card manufacturer
It's not Atari or Cryptic's fault its ATI - STO isn't the only game that ATI causes crashes with, check around the net and you'll see a lot of games that use dynamic lighting have this problem
PS: Is use a top-of-the-line nvidia myself ^_^ the only thing that's old is my processor which I'm going to be updating this holiday season -dance-
W7 Ultimate 64
AMD Phenom X2 Quad
8GB RAM
ATI Radeon 5450
Dynamic Lighting ON.
No crashes...ever. So, no, it's not always ATI. But I don't have a top of the line video card and have some of the more useless items turned down. But dynamic lighting seems to add more texture so I keep it on. But I don't ever have any issues.
I also have a power supply that's about 2X larger than required for my computer. Your video card could be current limiting it when you go with Dynamic lighting.

It seems to be stable if you limit the dynamic lighting setting to 2 lights per object. But it crashes if you go above that. What settings do you have it on?

3 lights per object. More than that seems overkill.

Hey genius, what settings are optimal?
And I just crashed from accessing a console. A GODDAMN CONSOLE!

Getting your game to verify itself before running could help, just in case somethign went a bit wrong.
6 gig ram
Radeon 5970
Windows 7 Ultimate
I should not be having problems if you're not. So how are your "settings" configured?
It's your fault. Seriously, maybe you should get a stable system?

Basically, there are issues with ATI cards. (Which is unfortunate, since my new machine has an ATI card.)
But it works fine on my old machine, with NVIDIA.
Your problem is highlighted in red.
