From the
Engineering Report 19 October 2010:
- STF Loot Sets - Special items options that visually alter the look of your ship as well as offer set bonuses
Can we have confirmation that there will be an alternative method of attaining these sets other than completing the STFs.
When i log onto the game I go straight to either my KDF or Fed toon and immediately Queue up for some Space PvP matches, PvPing takes up 99% of my play time here on STO. I have worked hard and put the hours in and have gained all the latest purple gear for my toons via the Emblem system.
I avoid ground combat where possible, and aside from the 30 mins each week doing the weekly episodes I dont do any PvEing.
Upon reading this latest Engineering Report the above quotes sentence left me worried.
My concern is that these Special Items which offer set bonuses will provide an advantage in PvP matches, the problem with this for me at least is that i loathe raids, i've played many MMOs and in each of them I find Raiding to be a total bore, Raid bosses doubly so. That's not to say that it is for everyone, there are many people out there who love raiding and I acknowledge that it is a very important gameplay style that must be catered for. However its not for me, just as PvP isn't for many of you, i've tried them, honestly I have but I dislike ground combat in STO and find that PvE just doesn't hold the appeal PvP matches have, so the thought that i will have to partake of the exact opposite to my regular and preferred playstyle in order to continue to do it effectively is a huge issue for me. I'm gonna have to do Ground PvE in order to remain competitive in Space PvP!?
All i ask is that we be either given the option to gain these Special Items via a different method, emblems works fine by me, im prepared to grind out the dailies for them, im not trying to get something for nothing here, i'll happily do the work. I just think that for those none raiders out there, there should be an alternative method of getting the endgame kit, just as has been provided with all previous endgame kit in STO.
Put it this way, if a new bit of endgame gear was introduced that was only attainable by doing PvP matches, there would be an uproar from all the PvE only folks that play the game, and rightly so. This is no different.
Thanks, sorry for the long post.

I agree with this completely, i would also like to add that as a Klingon player its very hard and time consuming just to get a group to do STF's, a good compromise would be to maybe add in some new daily PvP missions that allow the aquisition of these items...this would allow both PvP fans and PvE fans to get the items by the method of play they enjoy.
Sarcasm aside, It is a bit tricky to round up a 5 man team for STFs, currently. But think about this for a second... with this equipment set being put in place as a STF reward, wouldn't that drive faaaar more players to seek out a team to obtain them? That is the whole idea behind this.
Summary: /disagree
As a reply to the part i highlighted, the Klingons are supposed to be a PvP faction, this was said many, many times, many Klingon players are PvP focused and dont touch PvE endgame stuff like the STF's, so i find it highly unlikely that its going to get much easier to find groups to run them with, i really don't think that its unreasonable that an alternate PvP method of attaining them is made available. Its not like we are asking to be given these things for no time or effort..we just want to be able to attain them by the game play method we enjoy and also by the method the faction was designed around.
Chances are, Cryptic will in fact make a way to get these items outside of STFs in a way that's easily soloable, and completable in twenty minutes. It will then be grinded ad nauseum.
All instead of just fixing STF's in the first place, so that those of us who DO want endgame content can have it.
No, you want them, and don't want to have to do what is necessary. If I run Explore missions, I don't get PvP gear. If I do PvP, I don't get Fleet Action gear. If I do Fleet Actions, I don't get Memory Alpha gear.
Each playstyle gives DIFFERENT gear, for DIFFERENT playstyles. If you don't wanna do STF's, you don't get STF gear.
Just like every other MMO in existence. In Guild Wars, if I didn't do Urgoz's Warren, I shouldn't expect to be given Urgoz's Flatbow as a quest reward. I'd have to run Urgoz's Warren.
So if further down the road they made addition to the game, such as an uber set of ship Equipment but it was only available by grinding out PvP matches you would be happy with that if PvP wasnt your thing?
I doubt it, and if you where you would be in the minority.
I once created a thread detailing how Open World PvP could be introduced where is wouldnt have any effect on those PvE players out there who hate to PvP, yet even with this the thread quickly filled up with PvE players screaming that they would be forced to change their playstyle to suit it. yes, even though it quite clearly stated they would not have too. So at the merest mention of a new system or item that would be for the benifit of those who PvP the PvE crowd hit the roof. Yet when my PvP game is going to be effected by PvE, the PvE crowd are fine with that.
Look, i dont want to argue here, i dont want this to be a PvE vs PvP thread, i understand there are faaar more PvErs out there, all im saying is that its a tad stupid that in order to maintain my currently effectiveness in Space PvP Im forced to partake in multiple lengthy Ground PvE raids. Either turn of the set bonuses in PvP matches ore give us a alternative method of gaining this gear (no not C Store) much in the same what they has been done in the past and with the current high end sets. Thats it, jst a bit of equality is all.
Ok.....
- No one has said they arent prepared to work for this stuff
- There is no PvP Gear
- There is no Fleet Action Gear
- There is no Memory Alpha Gear
- Each Playstyle currently gives you access to the same high end gear.
EDIT: oh and your sig is wrong too, you shouldn't have to pay anything, even a box price for a game with no content......Next
Currently there is only 1 end game Equipment Set, and can be used in PvP, PvE and STF's, and that can be gained by PvP, PvE and STFs
These new Special Items with Set Bonuses look like they can be used in PvP, PvE and STFs but are only gained by STF's. This is a departure from previous form.
Actually your wrong, as Emblems can now be exchanged for marks you CAN get PvP gear from running explorations, and there is NO fleet action gear, even the first place reward is just somthing that can drop from any PvE mob and as to memory alpha thats just a really bad example as its not even available on the klingon side, but even then its just normal gear and nothing unique, the set items are unique and will only be available via the PvE STF's, so basically PvE players can get everything (including PvP gear if they trade emblems for marks) but PvPers cannot.
Hmmm, so all those badges I get for grinding PvP, all that phat loot for placing first in an FA, and all that stuff I make at Memory Alpha doesn't really exist?
Hmm...that means that none of my characters aren't really equipped with ANYTHING!
Don't forget, that you can't get the purple badge gear without what? Oh, yeah, grinding the requisite badges. In this case, the STF's. The STF's ALREADY give gear you can't get elsewhere.
Finally, you apparently don't seem to know what I'm referring to with my sig, to try and correct it. Since you're ignorant in other areas of this game as well, I won't waste my time correcting you.
If Memory Alpha is a bad example on my end, PvPers not getting this gear is a bad example on your end, since they wouldn't need it anyway, because it's PvE gear, meant for the next launch of PvE content.
Right i'll help you out here, im kind like that.....
All.....the.....stuff......your......toons.......have.......can......be........acquired (got).......by.....doing......PvE (fighting non player characters)......For Example.......Loot.....and.......Exploration Badges..........
There is no exclusive PvP gear, there is no Exclusive Fleet Action Gear and....oh yeah, there is no Exclusive Crafting Gear, Okies?
I guess I'm the minority, because I would jump all over PvP with a bigger reason/reward for doing so. And though I enjoy it from time to time, I'm not particularly big on it.
I would love to see Open World PvP, and I would love to see awesome rewards for partaking in it enough. Good thing to hear that a open pvp model is indeed in the works. btw.
I just think it's a wise gamecrafting decision on Cryptic's part to have different rewards for different activities. They did say that they were working on creating 'sets' when we first heard about it, afterall...
Borg STF Set - A much needed reward to boost to use by players, hopefully coinciding with some long needed bug fixes across the board. *cough*omfgterradome*cough*
Future:
???? PvP set
???? Fleet Action set
???? Class specific set - Probably hoping for too much here
I agree that players who primarily PvP should get some more to work with - and more to persue. But I say let the STFs have their own special reward. From what I've seen over the past few months in STO makes me believe great things are on the way in the coming seasons.
/sigh, the whole reason this thread exists is because this new gear's set bonuses will likely give those people who have it a advantage in PvP matches. its not PvE only gear, there is no such thing in STO, again, there is no PvP only gear, there is no PvE only gear, there is just gear, and so far this gear can be obtained via PvP and PvE, the method my differ but the prize is the same.
You clearly need to do a bit of re-reading somewhere my friend.
You do realise u can exchange emblems for the STF badges? so those are available by other means.
And your proof that this will just help in PvE comes from where exactly? How can you know that it wont be needed by PvPers? The more u post the more you just seem like a troll, either that or you take some perverse pleasure in the thought of people having to play a prticular part of the game they just dont enjoy to be able to stay competative.
True, but not for long. Season 3 is supposed to bring this.
I don't feel there should be another way to get this gear. It is visually distinct. This is the same idea behind flashy armor sets and epic weapons in other MMOs. There is no way to solo some quests for the same gear that others really put in the time and effort and coordination to get. I feel that since it is already available in game for no extra charge, you should just play the content you need to get the gear.
Also, it could be a way to get greater number of people into the STF missions and gain their feedback as well to continue improving upon these mission types. If they make this equipment available via other means it would direct player flow away from the areas they want feedback about.
Id be fine with this if it the set bonuses didnt apply outside of the STFs or even if they only applied during PvE gameplay. But I think that if someone has gone to all the trouble to run all the STFs multiple times to get this stuff then it should be able to be used across the whole range of playstyles, PvP, PvE the lot.
I just think access should be given to it via a PvP method too.
As for the example i gave, what i meant was that if a new set of gear was introduced that was far better than anything else in the game, but was only obtained through PvP matches, that the large section of the subscribers who dislike PvP would riot and demand access to it via none PvP methods.
As i said earlier in the thread i just don't see this happening on the Klingon side, theres a reason that STF groups are hard to get as a Klingon and i believe the reason is we were designed as a PvP faction, most end game Klingons are PvP focused. While i will admit Klingon players do use PvE to help leveling up (usually in the lower tiers where PvP is very hard to come by) once you get to BG and above PvP is almost exclusivly used to lvl. It was Cryptics decision to have klingons focused in this way and it seems only fair that we be given a way to get the unique set by the game method we were designed to use.
Were not asking for an easy or fast track way to get the gear just an equall oportunity to get it by the gameplay we enjoy playing, i would never expect people to be forced into PvP to get items just as i dont think we should be forced into PvE to get items.
I understand this, I do, and I completely agree that this has been introduced to get people to play STFs more.
The problem I have with this is that the chances are this gear will be the new uber gear to get, Its set bonuses will no doubt ensure that. Now currently im sporting the best gear in the game, i got it playing in the method I enjoy, PvP, but the same gear can be gained via PvE means too for those who dislike PvP. Everyone is happy,
Now this new uber gear is introduced which can only be gained via raiding, but it can (presumably) be used in everyday PvE and be used in PvP, so straight away you have excluded one playstyle (PvP) from gaining access to the new uber gear in the game. Add to that the fact that is can be used to gain and advantage in PvP matches the scales start tipping in favour of those who enjoy the PvE playstyle.
Im fleetless at the moment (still looking for the right KDF PvP house) and living in the GMT time zone, getting a PUG group for the STF;s is a near impossibility, for my faction and timezone at the times of day i play at. Ok if the STFs are revamped and these rewards are added the chances of getting a KDF GMT PUG run will increase, but we all know PUG runs arent amongst the most successful way of completing raids in any MMO. Add to this the fact that multiple STFs will be needed to gain this new Uber Gear, possibly more if only 1 piece drops per run. Your looking at a hell of a lot of STFs to get the full set.......
......So that leaves me, a person who loathes raids and but enjoys the Space PvP aspect of STO having to spend my time Looking for KDF GMT PUGs multiple times to play Ground PvE, a playstyle i hate, in order to get a shot of getting some gear so i can return to my current standard of competitiveness in the playstyle i enjoy, no sorry either make the bonuses none PvP or give us a PvP method of getting this stuff. Make is so each piece requires hundreds of emblems if you must, i dont care, people will still do the STFs because it will be an easier way of getting it, just please dont force it on people who like to PvP but not PvE
Chances are we will get Engines from Energy Systems, Shields or Deflector Array from Physical Sciences, and some unique weapon from Technology R&D. Since this is under In Development and
under In Testing, then the STF Loot Sets will come first.
why troll when you could just suggest that stf set be the stf set, and have them give pvpers a different pvp based set? the sky isnt falling sheesh
I'm sorry, but working hard does not compute with doing explore missions. They are not hard, by any stretch of the imagination. They are just easy, boring, repetitive time sinks. Requests like this is why we will never have difficult or challenging end game content in STO. Why do difficult content when you can faceroll your way through some super easy daily missions?
I know on my main toon of sorts I would like to get all the accolades. But I missed out on some of the pvp ones which now I regret and wish I had done them earlier. Now do I expect to see away for me to get that title or accolade..no because you cant get everything. There has to be rewards for certain things in game that can only be gotton through those means. If not then that content is worthless and will not yield anyone to it because more will flock to the easy way of getting said items.
You have to realise that if you want an item that is from a certain part of the game your gonna have to go out and do it. Not only for the ITEM but for the content
/agree with this posters opinion.
Do the STF's. With practice, all of them (except the epically bugged UT) are doable in about an hour to an hour and a half. Infected being the easiest w/ the fewest tedious parts.
100% Agreed,
I've only been able to complete 1 STF mission and that's Infected, it's so hard to find PUG groups that are willing to work to complete the other STF missions becaues they require a bit more teamwork and are much harder than Infected.
I've been stuck on the Cure for the longest time and I always end up with a PUG group that won't listen to advice, just want to run in guns A blazing and they all end up rage quitting after about 60 min because they can't get past any of the the later force fields.
I for one am glad that Cryptics in puting in STF only mission rewards, I'm hoping that the new rewards will make all players want to learn how to run the missions and work has a team to earn the high end rewards.
You can't expect to improve the STF player base if you say hey we made new items for players that complete all the STF misisons; however, you can get the same items by doing solo pve misison and grinding emblems.
These fourms are kind of strange, on the one hand you've got players screaming that STO is to much of a solo player MMO and that there's no real need for players to work together to complete missions.
Then you have the players that complain about STF missions and fleet actions because they require working with other players and can't be done solo.
Cryptic IMO has come up with a great Idea, make new and intresting mission rewards for STF misisons that make all players want to complete STF missions and inspire a bit more teamwork and cooperative play and kind of bring the player base together and some players are already crying foul.
Here's the deal has I see it:
STF misison rewards are earned by completing STF missions, we all have access to STF missions so we all have a an equal opportunity to earn this new equipment.
Will this new equipment give players some kind of advantage in PVP and PVE misisons, maybe.
If you're not willing to do the work, you don't deserve the reward.
I hope that Cryptic keeps these new STF mission rewards STF only and I hope that there so good that all players want them so all players will learn how to run STF misisons
Again I have at no point stated or infered that I wish to get these new items without working for them.
And your example of missing out an Accolade here or there is not relevant, we are talking about something here that will give the player a noticable advantage across all playstyles, PvP, PvE, FA STFs the lot but which is gained by only one of them.
Based on previous MMOs Raid armor and weps generally only drops once per instance and thats from a boss, so there is a high probability that we will only get 1 piece per run, to be /needed on by the entire group, OR there will be tokens that we all get that need to be saved in order to barter for each piece.
Either way in order to get the full set it will probably require dozens of runs per STF.
So take into account people like myself who live and play in timezones where the majority of STOs players dont play in, couple that with the fact that i work weekends, add to that the fact that I am fleetless, tag on the fact that the KDF being a mainly PvP focused faction has a lower population that the fed side and is mainly filled at the high end with PvPers, It will all add up to me being forced to spend my time sitting in Zone chat for hours spamming constantly for a GMT KDF PUG run to play a playstyle I loathe for an hour and a half just to give me either a 1 in 5 chance or a token which requires several more runs all to get a piece of kit to maintain my current competitiveness in the playstlyle i actually enjoy, I will have to spends weeks doing stuff i dont like in order to get back to the position i am in currently.
Im not asking for something for free, i will do the work, dont like the emblems idea, then fine, its was just the first alternative method that popped into my head, make it so you have to PvP for the pieces, PvP is just as hard as STFs no?
Look there are many people out there who arent raiders, there game will not be effected by this new gear and therefore arent that bothered, but those people like myself who purely PvP will be effected because it will give you an advantage.
Devs please provide some light on this subject, there are a lot of "probablys" and "no doubts" in this area.
