Klingon names and the Enigneering Corps

Hey gang,

I am finally going to make a Klingon (as oppsed to my beloved Gorn.)

Can anyone give me some help on developing a proper Klingon name? I want my new character to be part of the Klingon equivelent of the Starfleet Corp of Engineers. (They were actaully in on of the SCE novels.) I plan a male, unless some has a better suggestion for a female. Any help with naming would be cool.

    Are you looking for a particular sound or meaning? Short of that, I can't really help you, except to say that Klingon names are pretty free-form. Basically, if you can spit it, it's probably a good name. :D

    I'll throw my Klingons' names at you in case something strikes a chord...

    Markata: Means "monkey" in Sanskrit (don't know if there's any cultural connotations, though). Originally used the name for my AoC Stygian thief, but kept it because I like the sound of it. Proper Klingon spelling would probably be something like "marqa'a" though - no k's or isolated t's in Klingon.

    VuQoj: Supposed to be the counterpart to my Fed character Vulkod, and wanted to capture the general sound. "vu" means "manager" and "Qoj" means "battle," and though the elements are in the wrong order, for me it evokes the image of a coolly calculating tactician always thinking at least one step ahead.

    Male Klingon names typically start with a "K". Examples include Kahless, K'mtar, Kurn, Kor.

    "M" names are pretty popular with males, as well, such as Martok and Mogh.

    Others start with a "J". Like J'mpok or Ja'rod.

    "V" names are also popular, but mostly for females.

    "G" names are used from time-to-time for both sexes.

    Basically, though, any name that sounds relatively guttural or harsh would be perfect for a male Klingon.

    You can also take from other properties. For example, my female Klingon is named after an Orc assassin from the Warcraft series (Garona) and all of her bridge officers are named after well-known Orcs in the same universe (Kilrogg, Grom, and Gul'dan).

    Sadly I must admit that I am not fluent in Klingon at all. Any good on-line dictionaries? I have some ideas for using Klingon works for engineering items. That might fit my character concept well.

    Does anyone know what the "official" name of the Klingon SCE is?

    With my latest KDF alt, I took my real life name, and then reversed it.

    So I got this...

    Hey gang,

    I continue thinking on my Klingon Alts name. Does someone fluent in Klingon think P'TaH sound like a proper name? I just don't want to make a blunder. ;)

    I do not think there is a dedicated engineering corps within the KDF - but in the Klingon Empire novels, Kurak, chief engineer of the IKS Gorkon, was a member of the Klingon Science Institute, so there appears to be a connection. It seems reasonable that, despite its somewhat misleading name, the KSI is basically the Klingon Empire's loose equivalent of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers, as the Klingons do not busy themselves a lot with researching things that can not be used in a war.

    Actual building, however, is done at construction yards either under direct control of the KDF and/or the local governor / House Lord. The KSI only busies itself with theoretical advancement, although it is likely that they cooperate tightly with the Defense Force when it comes to practical implementation. I don't think they have their own ships and such as the CoE, though.

    Here is a link to "sounds" of the Klingon language, it will help you understand how any name you do pick "would" be pronounced.

    TOS Klingon names seemed to be heavily influenced by the letter K (Kor, Kang, Koloth). In the TOS movies the changed a little with names like Maltz and Torg in ST III or Chang and Gorkon in ST VI. TNG and DS9 introduce more variety Worf, Kurn, Kurak, Martok, Gowron, Klag, Kargan, Vekma, Leskit... etc...

    Klingon seems to favor guttural sounds and the use of hard consonances.
