Full 360 degree flight Option

I would like to see an option to have full 360 flight. I know some people wouldn't like it because they can get disoriented. But it would give the people who can handle it a much more fun experience. Also have a key command or button that would level the ship back to neutral plane. I just think the 360 flight would add alot more depth to the game and allow for more stratagizing and tactical manuvers. Thank you for your time. :)

I would like some 360 degree space combat, as it reminds me of Bridge Commander (which is awesome), overall, I think it would add to the "feeling" of being in space.

I agree. And I like your list of thing that need to be improved. Well said. :)

I would really like to see this feature included, I myself have wondered what it would do to the game.

DStahl said it is never gonna happen. Sorry.
All we can get is a max pitch increase from 45* to 85*.

Is there any reason why this is limited, beyond player oreintation? I mean, is tehre some 'tech' reason that luddites such as myself don;t understand?

:pits a pity :(. I love 360 combat. but on the other hand, whenver did you see two opposing fleets in ST not fighting each other as if there was a position to be down and up in space... I mean its not like one entire fleet in a ds9 dominion battle was completely upside down

Not a tech reason, a thematic one. In Star Trek, you just don't see ships flying at all sorts of angles. They meet on generally the "altitude". Sometimes a little higher or lower, but the top is the top and the bottom is the bottom and they're not floating on their sides or anything. Just a choice to make the game look and behave like Star Trek looked.

nothings stopping you from turning 360 degrees around, turning is in degrees per second, you just arent allowed to exceed climb and dive angles of like 45 and no rolling.

That is absolutely the lamest possible reason to limit something in a game, ever.

Agreed. Cryptic just reused the engine and it wasn't built for 360° combat. Space maps are ground maps, with your character being replaced by a ship. Beta players know what I mean. ;) End of story.

    not signed.

The game is more tactical with the restriction in place. In any event, this is pretty much a closed issue - dstahl basically said 'no'. Not even a 'maybe'. They did say the angle restriction might be eased to 80 degrees or something.

Really? It's "lame" to make a game look and behave according to the way the IP it is based on looked and behaved? Why even play a Star Trek game if you don't want it to act like Star Trek?

The current limitation gives an advantage to high arc weapons over lower ones (dual cannons). It's not really cool when you are in an escort and you have to shoot at a beam boat above you that has no restrictions.

It will be better with a 85° pitch angle.

Not when it's completely irrational and illogical, no.

The only reason combat looked like that in Star Trek was because of budget restraints and cheap filming techniques. If you know your Star Trek canon, you'll know that there were a LOT of retcons and changes throughout each series, and hell, even throughout each season.

Would you abolish LCARS? Originally it wasn't meant to have any animations, simply because of budget constraints on special effects. Would you insist on not having any animations on your LCARS interfaces? Would you insist on having everything be a button or a switch like it was in TOS? What about Klingons without ridges? Feral whip-wielding Ferengi?

There are some things that are inherently Star Trek and should remain so. This is not one of them.

I can't help but quote Atranis's annoyed remark: "It's not Warcraft in Space! It's much more sophisticated! I know it's not in 3-D!"

It is very annoying to dive down above or under a target, then get off center just before contact. 85% is an improvement, but is not close enough for maximum flight control.

hehehe yeah, heck even now you have to be at a certain angle and speed to 'lift off' from the 'ground' in sector space. very much like CO's flight mechanics. (well i lie a little, unlike CO we can't do any vertical ascent/descent, so CO actually has one up on us there even though that's how Kirk pwned Khans two-dimensionally thinking TRIBBLE...)

I think this is a great idea and it's stupid that they wouldn't give us the option just because it would't "look like the show anymore" That was one of the few shortcomings of the tv series' in my opinion anyway. Realism above truism, I say.

Also if you have seen the new Star Trek...there is a scene where the Enterprise is face-to-face with Nero's ship and they aren't on a level plane or altitude. When the cam pulls back the Enterprise is upside down compared to Nero's ship. I know that it was not seen often in the TV Series or movies, but the FACT is that there are no restrictions in REAL SPACE. You can go and any direction and Cyrptic should honor that and add it to the game. Hell...make two different servers. One for Easy, one for Hardcore. If the full 360 never happens then it really sucks that Cryptic isn't up to the challenge. Figures...

It occurred to me last night whilst playing that there is a much more likely reason as to why 360 hasn't been implemented.

Have you ever noticed NPC ship behaviour? The ships will ALWAYS turn in the opposite direction that you are turning. Change directions, and they change directions. If you go in one direction, you both end up circling each other and only your turn rate dictates if you manage to get into a forward firing arc.

I'd be wiling to bet it has little to do with remaining true to the franchise, especially given the bazillion other things that they didn't stick to, and more about them not having a clue as to how to implement 360 fighting AI's.

not all the ships in star trek met on even planes. anyone remember the episode of DS9 were the kligons divebomb the cardassian and jem'hadar fleet blocking sisco and his fleet from DS9?

anyway, if it gets increased to 80 its going to be a big help and change things alot. but there is no need to complain about it. it is what it is.
