"Scheduled maintenance" is *NOT* scheduled if you do so only a couple of hours before a patch.
I was playing last night. There was no scheduled downtime. I got up an hour early before work to play and find myself unable to. SCHEDULE your downtime or tell us the truth and say that you are doing an emergency patch.

They scheduled it! A whole few minutes before they actually did it!
Seriously, though, you're right they should've given us more heads-up. Looking at the patch notes, none of it seems like an "emergency".
General
Players will no longer get an Auto-Teaming error when joining certain missions in the Orellius Sector Block.
Several stability fixes have been made to the game client and servers.
If a Star Cluster mission fails to launch, it will retry two times before timing out and returning an error message.
Better error messages are now shown when Star Cluster missions fail to launch.
UI
Fixed an issue allowing Mercenary outfit lower parts to be worn with on-duty uniforms.
Tier 5 Klingon ships now show the proper rank name.
Fixed an issue preventing certain Space items from being equipped while on the ground, and vice versa.
The Whitelist_Invites command can now be used by players.
Thursdays have been Cryptic's official patch day since the second month after launch when they picked the day and let everyone know they would use that day - they do it on Thursdays so everyone's patched for the busier weekends. They used to patch every 2 weeks on Thursday but that became every week when they started the weekly episodes.

Strange, after i logged in the 21 or 22 the first thing i read was that a patch will be put in place on the 23...
Ok, it's Thursday morning and since I should expect this I guess from now on I will. Is it really so hard though to put the notice up on Tuesday night? Windows servers? Batch file and schedule. POSIX? Cron jobs and scripts. If it happens every Thursday a notice every Tuesday can't be that hard to put into place.

If you know it's coming on Thursdays what's the difference if they put the notice up on Tuesday or Wednesday? Exactly how much notice does someone need for something that happens every week?
Whenever I have free time before work, or if I cart my laptop away with me somewhere so I can hook on to a free wi-fi cloud and play some STO before I do some real work/holidaying, etc, I switch on, and lo and behold, the server is down for maintenance. What makes it worse is that I have no idea what PST and UTC are in real GMT time. I am now so paranoid that I'm convinced Cryptic are spying on me and taking my money whilst not letting me play.
Anyone who says that the notice was actually up last night as of 10:30pm EST is a liar. It's not thursday, there was no notice, the servers are down.
I must be wrong however, they never bring the servers down 2-3 times per week... or was it that I used the word 'patch' and you assumed I meant 'the client'?
Its the end of the damn world because you can't log into a game. Get over it. I noticed the notes on the launcher about 7:30 game time. So that gave everyone at least 8 hours of notice. You are as bad as the Australians whining about an American game having down time during the middle of the night (again, game time)

The "Announcement" section clearly shows a post by Stormshade saying the servers would be down. That post was made at 8:38 PM PST. It was also put on the launcher at that time.
I would hope that you are smart enough to remember that they have to patch once each week to get the new Weekly episode into the game. No matter how many times the servers might need to go down for maintenance they always need to go down once for the patch. Since there was no patch until this last update you should have expected this to have occurred sometime before Saturday's launch.
8:38pm PST is almost midnight my time. When I logged in at 9:00pm EDT there was no notice. I don't check the forums before logging into the game, and even had I done so I would not have seen that notice, because it was posted AFTER I WENT TO BED.
I have requested advanced notice. That's all, and it's not too much to ask.
It isn't the end of my world, no. It is, however, ANNOYING to get up an hour early to play and find myself unable to. Advance notice is useless if it isn't in advance.
There are many of you (on this forum) who feel a need to be belligerent and rude to a person who sincerely believes that they have a valid complaint. A person who, I should add, uses the appropriately provided forums to offer constructive feedback. You are directly responsible for the increasing hostility towards Cryptic and need to stop. This isn't a random gaming forum or thread, this is a feedback thread.
I am an adult, a developer and a paying client. I understand their position and respect the difficulties involved in satisfying consumers. I did not come here to attack them, I came here to offer criticism of a policy that is adversely affecting their clients, most of whom do not visit these forums. If my opinion is a minority one, then so be it. I should not, however, have to suffer through the abuse offered by a MINORITY community of FANBOYS to do so. A minority, I would like to add, that attacks anyone that offers criticism. I want this game to improve and continue to grow. I want to continue to offer my support to cryptic in the form of monthly subscriptions and C-store purchases.
Unlike thousands of others, I have continued offering this support in spite of hundreds of issues that greatly restrict my enjoyment of this product.
The following quotes are a selection among hundreds on why fleet members have stopped playing:
"You mean they actually answered you?" (referring to a GM help request) "Mine just get filed as bugs." - Fleet member and friend during a discussion on Ventrilo.
"... and I hate posting on the forums because they only listen to the fanboys." - Fleet member after saying he wasn't going to renew his subscription.
The problems are real and will not go away by attacking people willing to take the time to offer feedback. Cryptic would never openly support your actions for a reason, perhaps you should make yourselves aware of that reason and consider the possibility that you are harming them far more than assisting them in your actions.

This is the part I don't understand. You know they have to put in patch every week for the new weekly episode. You know every time you log into the game whether there's a patch or not because it asks you to download it if there is. You shouldn't need notice for something you already know: they have to put up a new patch each week and it happens on Thursday or Friday mornings. If you don't have a patch on Thursday then you know it's coming on Friday. This happens every Thursday or Friday; and sometimes both days if there's a system bug. Why do you need "advanced" notice when this has happened every single week for months? It's regular scheduled maintenance.

Maybe they could work on sending an Auto Email to all when they do the Post for SD Schedule??? They do already have the DB of Player List, and all it would take is a click on send button with the list attached. Just a thought.
Personally, I play if the server is up, and don't if it is down.

I've already made the point clearly that this happens all through the week, not just on Thursdays and Fridays. There was advance notice yesterday, so I'm not complaining about this morning, yet it is relevant to point out that it is Tuesday morning and not Thursday or Friday.
Your point is invalid, as the patches come all during the week, often two to three times per week, and unless there is a client side downloadable patch there aren't even patch notes to say why it was brought down.

The game has a standard weekly patch on Thursday morning. That happens every week and has for many months. No one should be caught off guard by the Thursday patch. If the patch is not ready by Thursday it gets delayed until Friday because the game needs to have the weekly episode loaded for Saturday. That, in no way, does not mean the game can't have emergency maintenance patches at other times during the week. Today's patch is to fix a bug that makes some people not able to complete the weekly episode from Saturday. Today is not scheduled maintenance. Today is emergency maintenance. The game will still have its regular patch on Thursday morning - or possibly Friday morning if it's not ready by Thursday.
Everyone but you seems capable of understanding the difference between scheduled maintenance and emergency maintenance; and everyone but you seems capable of remembering that scheduled maintenance is every Thursday.
The point trying to be made is don't wake up early on Thursdays to play as there's a 90% chance there will be a patch that day. If the patch doesn't come that day then don't wake up early on Friday because the patch that didn't come on Thursday will come on Friday so it's ready for Saturday. You don't need an update telling you this because it happens every week. It's regularly scheduled maintenance. And Cryptic has no control over when they have emergency maintenance.

Or this option: Go back to bed or find something else to do. Its just a freaking game.
A week or so back, I got on Holodeck Early in the AM, and had played about 10 or 15 minuets when I saw a Post from Admin Flash on Screen. It said that in 30 Minuets the server would shut down for Scheduled Maintenance. 10 minuets later, it poped up and said in 20 Minuets the server would shut down for Scheduled Maintenance. At the 15 minuet mark it said in 15 Minuets the server would shut down for Scheduled Maintenance. It did the same at 10 minuets, and at 5 minuets. At the 5 minuet notice, it also had a POP-UP box that said it, and I had to click on the OK in the pop-up box to clear the screen so I could finish my fight before leaving.
They do give some prior notice before they shut down, unless the timing of player entry is such that Shut Down Count has already passed, and you enter when shut down is eminent.???

I'll let this thread die, I promise. I just don't feel like fighting the fanboy nonsense any longer. I had to take just a moment, however, to point out that your reading comprehension sucks.

Maybe you should clarify. Cosmic_One only said what is pretty much clear.

I'll just point out to you that personal attacks and calling groups of people who disagree with you or you don't like "fanboys" are grounds for infractions. So here's a life-lesson for you: if you have nothing constructive to say then say nothing at all.

They've been doing it for the last 5 weeks now (weekly mission), every Thursday. So theres a obvious pattern to it.
Personally I have been expecting this for 6 days now, and I would have wondered if there had'n been one.
so yeah it's scheduled
we wouldn't get a patch if it was emergency maintenance anyway.
btw. those patchnotes this time... seriously?
When does the important stuff get fixed that is for months in the game now?
i mean stuff like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2Z3SpcXQ6I
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7aWJ-iOxAY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUo8bqmFeY0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BABoKI662U
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHccX25Sgwo
the game is so full with little bugs and annoyances that it is almost insulting that the patchlogs are so short...
Also i have a feeling these weekly patches are mainly to covertly add in the next breen mission so without the patches we have no new missions :P
Also its just a game, instead of complaining online about something trivial you should have went back to bed for an hour, thats what i would have done
I got up at 5:00 (well, 5:20... snooze) and took a shower, dressed, got coffee, sat down to play...
going back to bed wasn't really an option.
This was the first problem I saw.
