I just installed new drivers for my nvidia 9800gt and now the game especially in black colors and or shadows flicker. Today when i logged in everything now flickers... its like its getting worse.. Anyone have this or know the issue??????
I had this when I first installed my Nvidia card as well.
I found that if you fiddle with the lighting settings/resolution so that it has to restart the drivers or something, it stops it from happening when you put it back to the old values.
I think it happens to all of us if we use the 2xx.xx drivers rather than the 197.xx drivers. Apparently turning off Post Processing (in the STO video options) will stop it, but that switches off most of the nice graphical touches so it's a bit drastic. If you find a specific option that sorts it out, do let us all know.
Well I seem to have fixed w/e was going on for now. Will it pop up later not sure. Last night I took the advice to play around with the lighting settings. Going from Max to Low and so forth. At first didnt do anything than eventually i tweeked around with other things and slowly seen a better outcome. I dont recall what i played with, so i do appaulagise. But eventually the flickering stopped.
Now today I logged in, and went to space dock, no flickering, I checked my settings to get info for this post but to my surprise all my settings were back to max or 100% so i dont know what to tell yahs. Try playing with the lighting seems to do the trick, tinker with the settings till you see an improvement of the flickering till it stops. Best thing I can say.. I hope they can find w/e is causing the flickering and fix it. I didnt by a new comp with a 9800 gtx to see this game flicker. Peace
I've been having this problem, I can get it to go away for a while by either minimizing and then maximizing the window or going from fullscreen to window back to fullscreen again. It's only a temporary fix, though, and it doesn't always work.
i have them on my lan pc but i fixed that with shadows being lowered (Q6600 @3.7GHZ and 2x GTX285 SLI) 258.96 64bit
But i didn't have it on my Main pc only once but it stopped doing it (AMD Phenom 2 x6 1090T 5970 Xfire) 10.7 64bit i am even playing it 3x 1920x1200 (window mode) so i can watch movies
I would like to see a console for more Home tweaks for EXP users:cool:
If you people are using the Nvidia 200 series drivers then forget about them if you can.
The 190's are the last ones that work properly with STO, all the new generation drivers seem completely borked and there is no fix in sight from Nvidia.
And its not just STO thats affected.
I think I found a solution. Go to your video options and make sure the display mode is set to "full screen" and not "windowed maximized". I did that and the problem went away entirely.
I have a 260M and I have the flickering problem whether it's windowed or fullscreen. I would roll back the drivers to 197 (I have 258.96 now), but the StarCraft 2 cinematics wouldn't work properly with the 197 drivers for me. So right now it's either STO or SC2, and I'm choosing SC2 since it's much less buggy atm.
But it would be nice if either Nvidia or Cryptic would identify the problem and help fix it.

Since upgrading my video drivers lastnight having major artifacts and flickering of screen. running 2 5670 ati video cards in crossfire mode. was having no trouble at all before the new video card drivers were installed. I tried to go back to the older drivers, but still having problems with artifacts on screen, only on STO. everything else on computer including blu-rays play fine? NOW WHAT DO I DO?
I upgraded tonight from a gf 9800gt to a 460 and it sucks. I used the most recent nvidia drivers when my 9800 was in use and uninstalled and reinstalled them when I dropped in the 460. WTF? If it looked fine w/ the 9800 with the most recent drivers, why woudn't it work as well (should work better!) with a 460.
Same problem, Windows 7 64bit, GTX460 and the lastest nvidia driver 258.96.
I have the exact same OS, vid card, and vid drivers. I turnedoff shadows and space is fine. ESD is fine. Now my only gripe is base missions. When the shooting starts, large sections of the environment turn black. if I spinn the camera, other sections will turn back into drawn detail, and another section will turn into black emptiness.
Odd.
And if you have the 460, rolling back to the 197 drivers won't work. The driver package won't install because the 460 isn't recognized hardware.
I had this problem and I fixed it by fiddling with the VSync option in the graphics options. I just turned it off then back on and its worked fine since.
the 260 beta drivers works ok, but I the performance has gone way down.
I used to be able to play a video or DVD while playing STO in window mode, but with the 260 driver both game and video/sound laggs. I hope it's just an issue with the 260 drivers that will get solved before being fully released.
I had this issue after the Windows 7 installer updated the drivers automaticaly, so I simply went to the NVidia website and downloaded and installed the latest driver seperately, presumably the same driver that the auto update installed, and I no longer have the issue.
Can someone experiencing the problem post a screenshot? Thanks!
Dave
Sory Dave, but I don't seem to have the issue anymore. I tried to go back to settings where I would get the problem, but now I can't seemto recreate the issue. After comparing notes, the only difference between when I would have the flickering/studdering was if I had shadows enabled. Now if I reenable shadows, I get stuttering in space, but the base-map-portions-turning-black problem didn't re-occur.
I've got it too, happened when I upgraded from Win XP to Win 7, after reading this I'm going to see if I can find the last 19x drivers.
I have a 9800GT from eVGA Win7 64bit (now) and installed the 258 drivers.
Also as to a screen shot I think it would take video to show the problem. Its like, well the best I can describe it is a light source is flickering intermittently. Like a bad halogen lamp? It happens both ground maps and space for me.
I get it with the updated GeForce GT 220 update drivers. It's bad enough that upon launching a 2nd STO game (later in the day after closing the previous) it causes a full computer shutdown. No bluescreen even... just blank screen and a busy HD for minutes on end (longest I've let it run like that is 15min).
Moving up to a higher refresh rate seems to make it stop but any changes are honestly anecdotal. It acts slightly different every time.
As to screenshots..
Any time I catch it flickering it either looks 'normal' or it's a completely black screenshot.
EDIT:
The only way I've found to deal with it is to revert to the previous driver.

Give it a shot - worked for me

I'm using a GTX470 with the latest drivers.
Simple fix. Rolled back the drivers. The old ones work a lot better with STO than the new version.

I have exactly the same problem
Argh.
turning off postprocessing fixed it
posted in other thread as well

Yeah nice, no more flickering with the nvidia 260 beta drivers.
